Every fourth single parent household in Sweden lives on less than 60 percent of the median income, which is 188,000 kronor ($26,300) according to Statistics Sweden (SCB) figures for 2008.
The report shows that residents of small industrial towns are worst hit with almost a third of single parents classified as poor, in comparison to less than 10 percent in 2003.
The figures refer to the measure of relative poverty applied across the EU, namely 60 percent of median household income. As average incomes increase so does the threshold for what is classified as poverty regardless of purchasing power or daily calorie intake, which is one of the measures applied by international organisations to measure absolute poverty.

Thanks to all who visit my photostream, particularly to those who take the time to comment, I do try to reciprocate and to respond when questions are raised in comments.
I will take this opportunity to once again implore Flickr staff to reintroduce 'NOTES' functionality which was inexplicably taken away in 2013 and not yet reinstated despite promises from Flickr to do so.
96 dives in 2009. Should have and wanted to break the 100 mark. Haven't tracked dives per year, but I believe 96 in 2009 is a record for me. Might beat that this year with a drysuit. Not many diving holidays planned for 2010 though )-: Holidays add up quicker.
Learnt this year:
- Great diving in the Netherlands in July and August. You really need to make the most of it during those months. April 2009 was a cold affair with little life.
- When you're unsure which creature / critter you've discovered DOUBLE CHECK and verify. I missed out a rare shot of a juvenile dragonet, because I thought it was a juvenile bullrout. Never take juveniles for granted. Make the best of your photography as it might be the last juvenile or specimen in general you'll see for a long time!
- Dive when the subjects are "hot". Certain weeks of the year will yield best results for photography. Make the most of the dives in those weeks. Plan your animal.

The National Museum of African American History & Culture (NMAAHC) is one of the newer museums on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Physically, it's an impressive structure from outside, on the northeast corner of 15th & Madison next to the Washington Monument.
The museum is basically 7 floors. The ground floor with the gift shop & information with a large atrium. The 3 floors below ground predominantly tell history (chronologically) from the slave trade up to current day. The 3 upper floors address different aspects of culture (music, art, dance, theater, sports, and literature among others).
The photo you are looking at here is from my second visit, which happily coincided with Malcolm X's 96th birthday (19 May 2021). Since I'd been before, I didn't stop by information, but from what I recall of my first visit, they suggest starting with the lower floors and finishing with the upper floors. You'll probably want to block a half day, at least, to take this museum in.
Should you follow the suggestion of history before culture, you'll walk behind the information desk and around a back hallway to take an elevator down to the bottom floor (or stairs around the elevator shaft, should you choose). When you come out, you're greeted by darkness and displays regarding the slave trade in general, and in the different regions of the country, including "highlights" of the era, like Bacon's Rebellion, Denmark Vesey, etc. There is no specific demarcation to let you know you are moving up from one floor to another, but there are ramps (it's not a trick or anything like that). The farther up you go, the more you approach modern day, passing information about famous historical figures (Douglass, Tubman, DuBois, Booker T. Washington) and historic events (emancipation, sit ins, segregation, Jim Crow laws, black nationalism) until finishing with a few exhibits that highlight specific decades (1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s).
From there, you can take a break and grab lunch in the cafe -- if it ever opens again -- where they have foods that are staples in the black community -- before continuing to the other half of the museum.
I would suggest taking the escalator up to the top floor and working your way down. On the top floor, you'll find the exhibits for art, music, literature, and theater/television. Going down a floor, you'll find sports and special exhibitions. The fourth floor (well...2nd, I guess) is a hands on workshop and genealogy research center.
Realistically, this museum takes multiple visits to really let everything seep in. Even after two visits, I feel like I barely glossed over everything.

It is easy to forget this when a half-naked blonde woman is throwing up on your shoes during a walk home on a Friday night.
Just as easy, however, to remember - when taken from your element and, like this child, you are presented with something so far as from your own comprehension that you can do nothing but record - without even trying to understand.
Half of the students designed pictographs where one symbol equaled one student; the others designed pictographs where two symbols equaled one student. The pink Post-Its are questions students could ask about their graph.
D-Day beaches east - Sword, Juno & Gold
The D-Day Landings were the most vital part of the greater Operation Overlord to liberate Europe from years of German military occupation. Allied planning for a massive invasion of German-held France had got underway as early as 1943. The Normandy coast west from the Orne River Estuary to the Cotentin Peninsula was chosen for its flat, firm beaches, and to take the German military off guard – German intelligence thought an Allied invasion would occur much closer to Britain, on France’s most northerly beaches. As plans developed, the Allied commanders, Eisenhower and Montgomery, decided to extend the landing sectors to east and west. Preparations on a vast scale went on for months in southern England. Through superior air power and a campaign of misinformation, the Allies managed to keep the German military from learning about the build-up to the invasion. However, the Germans had fortified the Normandy coast, particularly after Hitler had put the extremely competent Rommel in charge of coastal defences along the French coast in 1943.Allied aerial bombardments in advance of the D-Day Landings were targeted to break up German lines and to bomb strategic spots, notably gun batteries, although these advance raids were not always successful. The invasion of France began in the night of 5th to 6th June 1944, a few days later than planned, due to bad weather. Gliders delivered specialist airborne troops to the two bridge-ends of the operation, above Caen in the east, and close to Sainte-Mère-Eglise in the west. The British troops who landed in the east successfully took the bridges over the Orne River and its canal. The American forces dropped in the west encountered many more difficulties, including, most famously, one paratrooper getting his parachute caught on the church tower of Sainte-Mère-Eglise.
The difference between the "date taken" dates and "date uploaded" dates of photographs on my photostream is quite surprising: it takes me on average 6,89 months to get an image uploaded. True that I upload some quite old photo(e)s sometimes, but I upload some photo(e)s as soon as I've taken them.
So what if there was a site that took in all of your public images, their date of capture and upload, and spat out a figure in months? As far as I know, no such app exists as of yet.
