Anyhoo... I saw this number this morning and thought 'Oooooh.' Okay, it was a very brief moment - and I've not been at all well [and often slightly delirious with the fever]. But still.
I'm not even sure 100,000 is a lot or not? It seems like a big number; it certainly would be if it were the number of women I'd kissed or the times my wife has laughed at the sight of me naked. Probably not, in the grand scheme of Flickr things, though. But if only a mere 1%... [Ahem. Sorry ;-)] ...of those 'Views' have produced a similarly brief [yet curiously satisfying] 'Oooooh,' then maybe that's quite a nice thought to go into the New Year with. And if you've all viewed only one of my images once, I'd personally like to thank all 100,001 of you, and apologise for the time you will never get back. [And if the only one you chose to view was this one... I'm truly, truly sorry. But if you're reading this, too, there really is no hope for you. Maybe resolve to get out more in 2011? ;-)]
This almost entirely pointless upload also marks my Winter Vomiting Virus, uh, period. And, yeah, it's as equally charmingly named as it's systematically desirable! But also interesting to note how it affects those stats... stay healthy, keep posting work, or the [Flickr] world simply moves on and there will still only be 9 people at your funeral. [Including the priest, the guy stood at the back with the broom and the 5 people who turned up early for the next one.]

Every year the Bureau of Labor Statistics surveys about 13,000 individuals to find out how Americans are spending their time. According to national statistics the population in Naryn Oblast has limited access to health care services and faces health concerns, such as child and maternal mortality that are higher than national average rates for the rest of the country. In response to this challenge and to increase access to high-quality health care and promote quality of life by maintaining international standard of health service, the Aga Khan Health Services established the Aga Khan Medical and Diagnostic Centre (AKMDC) in Naryn which was inaugurated in May 2016. AKMDC is a private and not-for-profit consultation and diagnostic centre.
The Centre, operating under a licence issued by the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan, is staffed with qualified doctors, nurses and paramedics to provide reliable and affordable services in gynaecology, obstetrics, cardiology, family medicine and paediatrics.

On Friday, April 15, Research Scientist Wei Sun gave a talk at Florida State University's Department of Statistics on "Provable Sparse Tensor Decomposition and Its Application to Personalized Recommendation."
Abstract: Tensor as a multi-dimensional generalization of matrix has received increasing attention in industry due to its success in personalized recommendation systems. Traditional recommendation systems are mainly based on the user-item matrix, whose entry denotes each user's preference for a particular item. To incorporate additional information into the analysis, such as the temporal behavior of users, we encounter a user-item-time tensor. Existing tensor decomposition methods for personalized recommendation are mostly established in the non-sparse regime where the decomposition components include all features. For high dimensional tensor-valued data, many features in the components essentially contain no information about the tensor structure, and thus there is a great need for a more appropriate method that can simultaneously perform tensor decomposition and select informative features.
In this talk, I will discuss a new sparse tensor decomposition method that incorporates the sparsity of each decomposition component to the CP tensor decomposition. Specifically, the sparsity is achieved via an efficient truncation procedure to directly solve an L0 sparsity constraint. In theory, in spite of the non-convexity of the optimization problem, it is proven that an alternating updating algorithm attains an estimator whose rate of convergence significantly improves those shown in non-sparse decomposition methods. As a by-product, our method is also widely applicable to solve a broad family of high dimensional latent variable models, including high dimensional Gaussian mixtures and mixtures of sparse regression. I will show the advantages of our method in two real applications, click-through rate prediction for online advertising and high dimensional gene clustering.

This international conference is devoted to statistical techniques in stochastic simulation, data collection and design and analysis of scientific experiments and studies representing broad areas of interest.
The 1st- 6th Workshops took place in St. Petersburg (Russia) in 1994, 1996, 1998, 2001, 2005 and 2009. The Seventh International Workshop on Simulation took place in Rimini in May 2013, the Eighth Workshop took place in Vienna in September 2015, and the Ninth one in Barcelona in June 25-29 2018.

Valentine's Day has a good average Rate (or Mood, if you prefer) of 3.286 out of scale of 1 to 5. (5 being the highest.) This is quite remarkable considering that my average rate for February is 3.068.
