Note-Grids are a tool for collecting and connecting objects of thought (in this case, words).

They treat words and other manifestations of thought as objects that can be freely manipulated to create new meaning.

They break meaning up into individual words to facilitate a more fluid, intuitive, and improvisational approach to knowledge production.

Premier David Eby has issued the following statement in response to the latest threats from the United States:

“Today, we are ordering the removal of all American beer, wine, spirits and refreshment beverages from the shelves at BCLIQUOR stores. The stores carry hundreds of types of U.S. alcohol that the BC Liquor Distribution Branch will also no longer be purchasing.

“We are taking this action in response to escalating threats from south of the border. Most recently, U.S. President Donald Trump made new threats against Canada’s dairy and lumber industries – and there are reports he has been musing about redrawing the border.

Final Written Statement

I have always been interested in the interaction between people and the natural environment. Some hold the view that humans should adapt to the natural world rather than changing the environment to suit our needs. Others hold the opposite view. Although, people may not initially relate with either of these two points of view, everyone’s personal actions reflect one of the two views.

This issue has been brought up more clearly in my mind as my neighbor’s house is being built on a plot of land that had stood vacant for twenty years. For the past eighteen years, I have grown up in a neighborhood that is made up of sections of old farmland. I never considered the building of our own house as an intrusion upon the land, much less the one hundred year old barn that had been erected years before. In fact, I always considered the farm buildings as a picturesque addition to the surrounding landscape. Therefore I decided to create a set of images that initiates a “dialogue about the impact of human activity on landscapes and an effort to depart from idealized notions of scenic beauty and pristine wilderness that were dominant in the early twentieth century” (brochure from “Altered Landscape Photography” exhibition).

I chose images that evoke a sense of conflict between nature and disruptive, yet orderly human activity. I desire to make my images compositionally pleasing, yet still have meaning. I do not have a specific age group or gender target, as human interaction with land happens across all these groups. It is ironic that this house is supposedly going to be one of the most “environmentally green” houses, yet it still disturbs the tranquility of its natural setting.

The greatest difficulty I had with this assignment was with lighting. Over our past assignments I have noticed that the quality of lighting plays an important role in how the image is viewed. It is my desire for these images to carry a significant message, and lighting is the best way to achieve that.

I hope that my images will produce a similar response that Ann M. Wolfe, the curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the Nevada Museum of Art says, “ Viewing these photographs as a collection reveals that much of today’s human activity involves the physical alteration of land and the making of marks on the Earth and that the Earth’s surface offers an irrefutable record of human civilization’s impressive endeavors—as well its worst failures.”

Michelle Stitzlein has been creating sculpture with recycled materials as a full-time artist since 2000 in her Baltimore, OH, studio. Her work has been shown in art and craft museums nationally. The “Moth Series,” was inspired by moths in her backyard and the premise that recycled materials have the capacity to metamorphose into larger objects of great beauty" Previous text from: cosi.org/exhibits/hallway-exhibits

Two guys at the base of the Washington Monument, before the 4th of July fireworks. Washington, DC.

I took this photo standing on a foot-wide wooden post that was about 3-4 feet high. I think I may have leaned on my fiance in order to get this directly above them. I was sweating, my grip on the camera was sliding, they were sweating and trying to keep their eyes open even with the sun going full blast on their faces. I need to remember that shade is my friend. I like this in black-and-white, but i did toy with color saturation and split-toning. Her eyes are blue and the blanket/batik they're on was aqua/blue/green, which complimented her eye color. But I think the black-and-white works best.
