In Zeiten von Tempora, Prisma und XKeyscore wirkt das ganze jedoch irgendwie harmlos ...

STASI, the Ministry for State Security was the official state security service of the German Democratic Republic One of its main tasks was spying on the population, mainly through a vast network of citizens turned informants, It has been described as one of the most effective and repressive intelligence and secret police agency ever to have existed and held personal files on 250,000 of its citizens, here we see an agent accessing the file belonging to J Wharton
What started as a canteen was converted into a prison complex by the Soviets after the second world war. In 1951 the Stasi took over and turned it into their main prison.
This is one of the creepiest places of Berlin...It breathes desolation...

Apparently there used to be a fountain around here, an artificial stream and waterfall even, kids playing in the water. They spent three-quarter million euros on restoring the whole park in 1997, only for the flood that year to wipe it all away again two months later. The local government again invested 60,000 euros in 2012 to fix the hydraulic system, but vandals destroyed it soon after.
This corner of the park looked long-forgotten to me these last two years, despite further repairs that were apparently undertaken in 2014. I also didn't know until I just read about it now that colourful local personality Sixto Barroso Vázquez was halfway in his own, rogue amateur restoration efforts when I took this photo. Without municipal approval, using sand, lime and cement they bought themselves, he and a friend took it upon themselves to restore, best they could, the monument and its mosaics — just as they did earlier with a relief elsewhere in the park whose original materials were stolen and sold as scrap metal years ago.
Since the government has no money for restoring the park itself, they decided, at least for the time being, to leave his work up, and not to fine the two men.
