The magical standing stones of Arran

"Let me keep my mind on what matters,

which is my work,

which is mostly standing still and learning to be astonished."

~Mary Oliver

on my way home...

This past week we have had really strong winds. I still can't believe this old shed is still standing.

I was out looking for fall color on a windy, drizzly day. Most of the trees in my area are just turning brown and dropping their leaves but this majestic tree is doing its best. You can count on a maple!

Belhaven Bridge, known as the ‘Bridge to Nowhere’, is a bridge across the Biel Water. The Biel Water is a stream that runs through the village of Biel into Belhaven Bay.

The bridge is something of a misnomer because at low tide it's used to cross the stream and enter Belhaven Bay beach. As the tide comes in, water rushes in and fills the surrounding land, isolating the bridge.

Tui play a critical role in the cross pollination of New Zealand Flax (Phormium tenax). Flax that is currently flowering produces copious amounts of nectar and is widespread throughout New Zealand. This is a current favourite of the Tui.

Named for its loud ‘bob white’ call, this quail is a small chunky bird with short rounded wings. Males have a black cap, white throat and chin, and a white stripe through and above the eye to the back of the head. Females have a tan colored throat and no black neck collar.

Bobwhite quail live in bushy areas interspersed with fields. They prefer edges, fence rows and areas with vegetative cover.

Bobwhites are active during the day; they feed on seeds, fruit, insects and green plants. Pairs are monogamous with pair bonds sometimes persisting between breeding seasons. Males advertise during the May to August breeding season with a distinctive bob-bob-white call.

Females lay large clutches of up to 14 eggs, which hatch after 23 days. The precocial young are about the size of a quarter coin, and feed largely on insects. The chicks double their weight every 10 days can fly within 2-3 weeks.

Bobwhites are commonly seen in groups known as coveys. Coveys usually consist of about 10-30 birds, depending on the time of year. Every night, for safety, the covey forms a circle with their heads facing outwards, away from each other and their tails together. If a predator startles them, the covey flushes in all directions.

Bobwhite quail are a popular game bird in the United States. In 1970 an estimated 35 million of them were shot. In the southeastern US these tiny birds were instrumental in the preservation of some of the best examples of old growth high pine.

Godrevy Lighthouse was built in 1858–1859 on Godrevy Island in St Ives Bay, Cornwall. Standing approximately 300 metres (980 ft) off Godrevy Head, it marks the Stones reef, which has been a hazard to shipping for centuries. (Wikipedia)

I went to a place I have only been to once before. That was a few years ago. I did more shots this time and tried to set up better this time. I admit though, that I should have used a tripod to use a higher F stop.

Hope you like.

Dan Barton has created and installed 101 6ft tall Armistice day Soldier Silhouettes to Commemorate the end of WW1 and 75 poppy wreathes to commemorate the end of WW2 at The Aston Rowant Nature Reserve. The Natural England Reserve can be found on the hillside at Stokenchurch, Oxfordshire above the M40 Motorway.

Dan hopes to raise funds for The Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and has set up a Just Giving Page.

Dan hopes this installation will provoke thought as people drive along the M40 motorway to remind us to enjoy the freedom we have and to teach our younger generations to treasure and cherish their freedom and to live well. Dan believes that all that we have in this moment is possible because of those that have come before us.

Pink or purple magnolias in full bloom. This one is from my backyard. I have been talking photos of them almost daily. Try to capture the most beautiful moment.

Isolated from other walls and buttes working to become isolated pillars, Standing Rock is a well known feature of Monument Basin in Canyonlands, often seen and photographed from Grandview Point on Island in the Sky 2000’ / 600 m above. The north-facing slopes still hold snow from a significant storm 3 days prior to when this photo was taken.

Standing Rock was first climbed in 1962 by Layton Kor and colleagues, because as they put it “it won’t always be there.” They described the Organ Rock shale that the pillar is made of as "layers of rye-krisp sandwiched between layers of kitty litter." As you might guess few people have been on the summit of this 300’ / 90 m tower.

I had visited this area a year ago, managing to get a flat tire and lacking the appropriate lug nuts for the spare… that saga is best forgotten ;-). This year’s trip was successful in that I managed to drive the entire White Rim road, though the conditions were tricky at times with snow, ice, and slippery mud on steep slopes. The weather was also dicey at times with high winds, occasional snow, and cold temperatures. But hey, dramatic weather sometimes yields beautiful scenes.

It wasn't you it wasn't me it wasn't anyone.

It was a day so long awaited and a chance to be as me.

I let the wind run through my hands as I turned to walk away.

In distant days I long to sense it all so clear.

And fighting time so hard I pray that this moment lasts forever.

And will the world stay standing still at least for me.

I'm renting the Sony RX 10 M4 just to see if I want to buy it. I've had the same cell phone and Canon cameras for a few years and want to try something different.

Trees, trees and trees, because we're in Autumn

Thanks for your visit and comments, very much appreciated. I'll catch up on weekend, so little time now!

This morning we had a combination of mist and sun. It was beautiful.

Sorry about the lack of activity on Flickr for the last week or so, but I've had Covid, and haven't really felt like doing much. Just been flicking through your shots and the odd comment here and there.

Anyway... Feeling much better now. I'll endeavour to catch up with you guys over the next few days.

I'm allowed back out to play on the 30th yay !!
