It has not taken long time for the Washington Redskins to learn some important things during the 2017 training camp. The Burgundy and Gold can still count on fielding one of the most electrifying passing games in the NFL, despite losing Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson to free agency.
Jackson and Garcon won't be missed too much if newcomer Terrelle Pryor Sr. carries his jaw-dropping form at camp into the regular season. Pryor has wowed fans in Richmond with one highlight-reel grab after another, showcasing the blend of size and speed sure to put pressure on defenses this season.
For all his progress, Pryor's quick first impression isn't the only positive news from the Redskins' camp. New arrivals have been showing flashes of talent on defense, with top draft pick Jonathan Allen and free-agent signing Zach Brown starting to turn heads.
With so many new faces at key positions on both sides of the ball, it will be important for the Redskins incumbents to maintain their levels and provide the right platform for success.
Fortunately, one of the Redskins' most consistent performers, left tackle Trent Williams, is showing no signs of deteriorating. The perennial Pro Bowler is preparing for his eighth season in the big league and looks as good as ever based on his work at camp.
The Redskins need to rely on Williams' continued excellence. After all, he is still the foundation of the offensive line, despite the unit's rapid steps forward under coach Bill Callahan the last two seasons.
Williams, Washington's first-round draft choice in 2010, is no longer the lone standout along the front line. Right tackle Morgan Moses and guard Brandon Scherff have ensured Williams has the support he needs.
The Redskins can surely count on having a better defensive line in 2017 after stockpiling talent up front this offseason. At least things should work out once Washington's coaches decide who exactly will play along the three-man front.
Flexibility is what every defense wants, but sometimes it's as simple as putting your players in their best positions to succeed. If Allen is most effective as a four or five-technique working over the left tackle, it's precisely where the coaches should put him.

Mississippi College freshmen Hannah Chamberlain of Evergreen, Colorado, Ainslie Schenk of Zeeland, Michigan and Callie Winkelman of Brandon were on hand for Saturday's Choctaw Fanfare. They are members of the MC Lady Choctaws cross country team. The Aug. 16 event attracted student-athletes, fans, coaches & alums to the Golden Dome as MC begins its 189th academic year.

Australia doesn't have princesses. We exported one to marry a handsome Danish prince once, and made a film about some questionable ones in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, but England apparently has plenty of them, and so I was excited to meet one.
I found her in Soho, and she had a friendly bear keeping her company, and they seemed very happy to have a hug for the photo.
Sensing an opportunity, and missing my family back in the land downunder, I figured I could get a free hug here, especially since I had heard that hugs in Soho normally cost money.
But ever mindful as I am of not upsetting the local constabulary, I thought that hugging a princess in public might not be the safest option. Actually that was a good decision as later in the day, I did have some issues with the authorities, and perhaps I might relate that story tonight.
So I know you can't see it in the shot of me but my arm is well and truly around the bear. I actually wondered if it was a male bear or a female bear. But hey, I was desperate for a hug and it was a cold day and it felt good.
As I walked off I did wonder if all English princesses had training in Romanian or Polish accents and why was she standing outside Hamleys Toy Store anyway. Very strange country this England.

Mississippi College softball players Shay Mickens of Odenville, Alabama and Macey Lee of Pearl take a picture after practice Wednesday afternoon. An outfielder for the Lady Choctaws, Shay played at Wallace State Community College in Alabama. An infielder for the Lady Choctaws, Macey was a Pearl High standout before coming to MC. The softball team's next home game is a doubleheader vs Concordia on March 14. The first game is at 4 p.m.

Gran Canaria, Canary Islands (Thursday, May 12, 2011) – The Asp 3-Star Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior, Event nº3 of 7 on the Asp Europe Men’s Pro Junior Series ran through to complete Round Two with standout surfers Dimitri Ouvre (BRB) 19, and Tom Cloarec (FRA) 17, leading the remaining Top Seeds through stormy on-shore conditions in peaky 3-4ft waves at La Cicer.
Surfers competing at the Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior are out to claim the valuable ranking points on offer at this 3-Star rated event and place themselves in the race for the overall European Pro Junior title and the chance to compete in the Asp World Junior Series starting in Bali, Indonesia on October 3, 2011.
Ouvre, who won last week’s Somo Pro Junior, continued his run of form opening his account with a solid ride to control the heat. With minutes remaining Ouvre tore apart a peeling left wall with three critical snaps in the pocket to lock in an 8.57 out of 10, the highest single-wave score of the event.
“It is really hard out there today. There are some fun set waves but you have to wait for the good ones and sometimes it is difficult because you see so many waves coming through. You have to wait for the bigger ones to get the good scores but at the same time it is hard too.”
Ouvre’s surfing and his relaxed approach to competitive surfing has shown positive results so far this year and the current leader on the Asp European Men’s Pro Junior series looks set to put in a big performance on the Pro Junior rankings in 2011.
“I have no pressure on me and I want to take it heat after heat. It is ok if I lose but I want to win for sure another Pro Junior. I want to surf and I am feeling confident but not too much which is good.”
“This is a good place to make a contest,” explained Ouvre about La Cicer. “Sure there are waves in Canarias which are better but here is good for a contest because there are many waves and you are not going to lose because you can’t get any waves. You take your waves for sure and you are going to have your two scores.”
Tom Cloarec (FRA) 17, ignited in his early morning heat as he destroyed a long left with fully committed fins-free forehand snaps to claim an 8.43 out of 10. Cloarec showed loads of speed and flow to highlight his performance in the tough conditions on offer to advance through to Round Three ahead of Ethan Egiguren (EUK) who placed second.
“In the beginning of the heat I didn’t get any good waves but then that left came in and I surfed it well and I got an 8. It is a fun wave to surf if you can catch the good one.”
“I prefer to surf the lefts,” continued Cloarec. “I saw that they would be better during my heat so my plan was to try and find them. I want to get a result here but I am trying not to think about it too much and just concentrate on my surfing.”
Kieren Bulard (REU) 19, impressed in the tricky conditions with flowing rail turns despite the battering winds and face chop on the shifting peaks. Building on his initial scores, Bulard finished with the modest total of 9.17 out of 20 to take out a low scoring encounter.
“It is smaller today and I caught a couple of mushy waves but I am happy because in the end I got through my heat. I got a 5-point ride and then after that I tried to catch a good wave to build on my scores but I didn’t find a better wave. It was ok because no one else found another good wave either. I wasn’t nervous because I saw that the others were scoring low, getting 2 or 3 point rides.”
Bulard, ranked nº17 on the Asp European rankings, is concentrating on the higher rated Pro Junior events for his 2011 campaign and made his first appearance after his 9th place finish on home soil in Reunion Island last month.
“This is my second event after the Reunion Island Pro Junior. I arrived in France one month ago to do my practical studies as a coach and I have been surfing and training in Seignosse.”
Pierre-Valentin Laborde (Hossegor, FRA) 19, one of Europe’s most experience campaigners, showed his talents on the moving peaks with a powerful display of forehand gouges and committed close-out turns to cruise through to the next Round.
“When you get a wave you don’t know if it will be a good one or not so I tried to do at least one big turn to try and build up some scores. I have some good boards here with me but it is so difficult to surf out there because it is so mushy so I used a normal board and it went good in today’s conditions.”
“This is my last year as a junior,” stated Laborde. “I did the Reunion Pro Junior and came fifth there so I am pretty confident at the moment and I want to be in the race for the European title.”
Charly Termeau (Hossegor, FRA) 14, one of the youngest competitors in the Islas Canarias Santa Pro Junior, advanced in second place behind Laborde in a tight battle over Pedro Berasaluce (EUK) and local Kai Garcia (CNY). Termeau clinched his place in the next Round with a series of flowing forehand snaps to secure a 5.17 out of 10.
“I am happy with the result because I was against guys who are older than me and it is not easy for me to pass heats. The right I caught was probably the best of the heat but it was not the perfect wave so it is difficult to surf out there. I got through to Round Three in Somo last week and I want to do better here again.”

I find myself more and more only wanting to take photos that involve bokeh/DoF/light. I guess shooting mainly with prime lenses tends to do that; I have become obsessed with my 50mm.

The cinema and Tesco at Allerton, 1980. A life-changing moment took place here, because the standout memory for me is watching an all time favourite 'Airplane', and the support movie, a comedic film noir about a werewolf who mugged old ladies for dog biscuits from their shopping, here.
These are from the third batch of 'Liverpool - Then and Now' photo collages that I put together during a hectic but interesting couple of week's project in December 2012.
I've treated the project as a 'treasure hunt' trying to work out the exact location that the original shot was taken, and this section of the set were taken at various times between 1890 and 1980, mainly around the suburbs in the south end of the city, but there are also some taken in town and a few in the north end.
Sometimes the exact angle is no longer possible, due to new buildings in the way etc but I have got myself as close as I could and learned a bit more than I did about the buildings and lives of people that were around Liverpool before I was.
For the 'Now' shots, I tried to put the onus on duplicating the original rather than necessarily getting the 'best' shot I could, so if the original was wonky, I wonked up the modern one. I also tried, where possible, to catch any modern equivalent details, so if a
tram or car or pedestrian was in the original, I tried to get a bus or car or pedestrian in the same spot - that was by no means always possible, though.
A note on copyright issues - the last thing I would want to do is use someone else's work without their permission. Most of the 'Then' pictures I either bought in a secondhand bookshop or found on the internet. I believe most of these pictures are either postcards, engineers or sanitation department records pictures and just the very occasional individual person's photograph. I believe very old postcards and the like are generally 'in the public domain' so haven't done much checking on ownership of them. On the shots where I have been able to work out a previous Flickr appearance, I have emailed the persons I believe to be the owners and asked for their permission to use them.
Where they have given permission I have credited them accordingly.
If anyone sees others that they hold the copyright for, please do contact me - I would be more than happy to credit you as such and add any information you would like, or I would remove them altogether if preferred. Saying that, I hope as many people as possible enjoy what I've put together, and I would be interested if anyone has any questions, comments or corrections!
I've thoroughly enjoyed the project so far, so if I have the time, the weather stays reasonable and I find some suitable 'Then' shots, possibly more north end of Liverpool suburb-based, pubs and docks, I may well soon add some more.

Students participate in English Camp at Humphreys

CAMP HUMPHREYS – Participants in the United States Forces Korea Good Neighbor English Camp visited here, May 17. This camp aims to give standout Korean students a better grasp of the English language and American life, while strengthening U.S.-Korea relations.
More than 60 students attended the camp, and while here they played basketball, did pull-ups, received climbing instruction and visited the Humphreys airfield. Attendees reported that the camp was time well spent.
“This was a worthwhile experience,” said Sim, Yun-ji, a student at Gunam Health High School. “This gives us all a chance to strengthen our English skills and have a lot of fun with our fellow students and the Americans.”
While the overall camp lasted only the three days, the benefits will endure, Sim noted.
“I am studying to become a nurse and the camp helped with that goal,” Sim said. “I will not forget the good times and good friends from this camp.”
Yoon, Hyun-gyu, an intern who works in the Humphreys Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security office, helped with the camp. He said the focus was on language and on U.S. culture.
“This is an opportunity for the campers to get a good foundation on American life and the English language. This will help them in the future,” Yoon said.
The campers were housed by U.S. families in the Yongsan Garrison.
“That helps us understand American culture and get some good American food,” said Lee, Jin-hee from Dongil High School.
“Thanks to the English Camp, I understand the language and the culture better than I did before,” added Kim, Min-seung from Daegu Gyeong Sin High School. “I am taking a lot of good information away from this camp. I thank Camp Humphreys and the host families for putting this on.”
Pierce Cole the starting standout goal keeper of the 2014 Mission Vista Varsity Soccer Team lays out to make a great diving save to protect the lead against cross town rival Division 2 Oceanside. Mississippi College Lady Choctaws basketball player Alexus Stirgus of Vicksburg scored a dozen points in the 2nd half as MC defeated Howard Payne 82-67 Saturday. Alexus, an MC senior, is pictured in the stands at the Golden Dome watching the MC men's team defeat Howard Payne, an ASC rival. Cara Beverin of Biloxi tossed in 21 points to spark the Lady Choctaws victory in the opening game.

This is my first pass at the cooking assignment. All 4 shots in this group are hanging from the ceiling by fishing line. Going for the daytime chef / nighttime serial killer theme

Standout buses in the Lothian fleet, among the regular madder and white in November 2015, were the batch of Wrightbus Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Volvo B5TLs used on the Skylink 100 service running between the city centre and Edinburgh airport.
Mississippi College soccer players Kaitlin Kiss of Orlando, Florida, Richard Colorado and Francisco Martinez, both of Houston, Texas, and Nicole McKissack of Madison hit the books at the Caf Tuesday morning. Finals are just around the corner on Dec. 17. Lady Choctaws players Kaitlyn and Nicole are both MC juniors. Richard and Francisco are seniors on the Clinton campus.
