Venice is a city in northern Italy known both for tourism and for industry, and is the capital of the region Veneto, with a population of about 272,000 (census estimate 1 January 2004). Together with Padua, the city is included in the Padua-Venice Metropolitan Area (population 1,600,000).

The name is derived from the ancient tribe of Veneti that inhabited the region in Roman times.[1][2] The city historically was the capital of an independent city-state. Venice has been known as the "La Dominante", "Serenissima", "Queen of the Adriatic", "City of Water", "City of Masks", "City of Bridges", "The Floating City", and "City of Canals". Luigi Barzini, writing in The New York Times, described it as "undoubtedly the most beautiful city built by man".[3] Venice has also been described by the Times Online as being one of Europe's most romantic cities.[4]

The city stretches across 117 small islands in the marshy Venetian Lagoon along the Adriatic Sea in northeast Italy. The saltwater lagoon stretches along the shoreline between the mouths of the Po (south) and the Piave (north) Rivers. The population estimate of 272,000 inhabitants includes the population of the whole Comune of Venezia; around 60,000[5] in the historic city of Venice (Centro storico); 176,000 in Terraferma (the Mainland), mostly in the large frazioni of Mestre and Marghera; and 31,000 live on other islands in the lagoon.

The Republic of Venice was a major maritime power during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and a staging area for the Crusades and the Battle of Lepanto, as well as a very important center of commerce (especially silk, grain and spice trade) and art in the 13th century up to the end of the 17th century. This made Venice a wealthy city throughout most of its history.[6] It is also known for its several important artistic movements, especially the Renaissance period. Venice has played an important role in the history of symphonic and operatic music, and it is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi.

This is one of several hidden staging yards that Steve Sandifer has on his layout. As viewed from the aisle, a gently rising hill behind the town of Moline, Kansas hides this five-track staging yard. To get this shot, I stood in the rightmost corner and raised my camera high enough to peer over the view block. An overhead mirror enables the operator to guide a train in or out of the yard. The longest track is a through track for continuous operation during public open-house events, and the storage tracks contain three Santa Fe freight trains and a Thomas the Tank Engine train to delight his grandchildren and any young visitors. To see Thomas, click on the photo for a closeup.

SPOKANE, Wash.- On Monday afternoon a brush fire broke out on the west side of Spokane's South Hill. The fire, which broke out around PM, was burning on the hill between High Drive and The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course.

By 10 PM Monday night the fire was 100% contained. This does not necessarily mean the fire is totally out, but that crews are confident it won't spread and will be out soon. Fire crews tell us that at its peak the fire was about 30 acres in size. But it was of special concern because at one point it burned to within 75 yards of a line of homes on High Drive. Incredibly there has been no damage to any homes or other structures.

Spokane Fire Chief Bobby Williams tells us he believes that planes dropping fire retardant played a big role in keeping the homes safe. The fire also prompted road closures and voluntary evacuations, however those are all now lifted.

Crews tackled the fire from both the lower part of the slope, at The Creek at Qualchan Golf Course, as well as from the top of the bluff on High Drive.

11 firefighters remained on scene through Monday night watching out for hot spots. 20 firefighters will be on scene all day Tuesday looking out for internal burning. The smoke in the air on the South Hill should be pushed out by Tuesday afternoon.

WEEK 6 – Spin Street, Set II

At the rear of the CD department – in the very back left corner of the store – was this setup, dubbed “Spin Street Live!” Sadly, the stage looked quite disused on my visit, blocked off by that equally miserable-looking shelving unit. Concerts were a common theme in this building from the Blockbuster Music days onward, but I’m pretty sure they were carried out in more logical places in the salesfloor than this very back corner where traffic was lower. Indeed, I want to say many of the concerts were held in the center of the store, on top of this emblem in the floor; that way the bands could be seen and enjoyed from most any position inside, and the setup would also be much easier, given that it entailed simply moving a few display units instead of entire aisles.

Bottom line… I’m not quite sure why Spin Street would have set this up back here. But it’s still cool to see, regardless!

Having caught up with former London and Bristol Olympian 34049 P249UCW a few months earlier in Newquay, it was a slightly sad scene to see it withdrawn and parked up minus destination display at Taunton on 20 Aug 2016.

Not certain where it ended up - scrapped I assume?

A trip to the moon is underway. The first stage of the mighty Saturn V has been expended, and the second stage is in the process of igniting its five J-2 engines. The separation motors are pushing the rocket away from the spent stage, and are forcing the second stage's liquid propellant to the bottom of it's tanks.

I'm not a graphic artist, but I tried to play one anyway because otherwise the flames of the separation motors look even worse.

I didn't change the official model much, so the image deviates from reality a bit. The two stages are actually held together by an interstage section, but the model makes the interstage part of the lower stage. That wouldn't work in reality since a torque on the lower stage could easily allow it to impact the nozzles of the J-2 engines. What really happened was the interstage detached the first stage and remained with the second stage for a while. That would cover up the engines in this picture. Also, the separation motors were on the interstage, not the second stage. After the J-2 engines were all running, the interstage was jettisoned.

This was filmed on at least one mission (Apollo 4), and the film successfully recovered.
