By the time László Moholy-Nagy turned towards painting after graduating from law school and developed his own abstract style influenced by Malewitsch and El Lissitzky, it was inevitable that he would become one of the most important artists of Constructivism. He soon exposed himself in Hungary as the founder of the artist group "Ma", but left his home country after the failure of the revolution.

He moved to Berlin In 1920 where Gropius noticed him and invited him to join the "Bauhaus" in 1923. There Moholy-Nagy ran the metal class but also worked in all other areas of design in which he was equally influential. The artist published his ideas in the series of Bauhaus books, for example "Malerei, Fotografie, Film" (1925). Moholy-Nagy wanted an "experimental, functional artist […] who considers art as a laboratory for new forms of expression which were then supposed to be employed in all areas of modern life" (Karin Thomas).

 

The expectations of the age of technology and his new media led Moholy-Nagy to a functional use of Abstraction, which he managed to show in all areas of design and which guided him through different phases of experimenting. His varied oeuvre ranges from painting, photography, film, design and stage design to experiments with photograms which considerably influenced the development of light art and kinetic art. László Moholy-Nagy left the "Bauhaus" in 1928 together with Gropius and worked in Berlin as a stage designer, exhibition organiser, typographer and film producer. He emigrated to the USA in 1937 and ran the "New Bauhaus" in Chicago. Moholy-Nagy opened his own art institute, the "School of Design", in Chicago in 1938 and enlarged it in the following years by adding the faculties economics, psychology and information theory.

 

László Moholy-Nagy became severely ill and died one year later, in 1946.

Poppies at the Tower of London by jane_sanders

'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red' created by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, to mark 100 years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War.

 

888,246 ceramic poppies have progressively filled the Tower of London's moat since 5 August 2014 with the last being 'planted' on Armistice Day (11 November).

 

Each poppy represents a British fatality during the First World War.

b Edinburgh, 30 March 1869; d London 24 Feb 1941). Scottish painter, poster designer and stage designer. After leaving the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, in 1887 he trained briefly in Paris at the Acad?mie Julian under William Bouguereau. He settled in England in 1891. In 1893 he met William Nicholson (his future brother-in-law); this resulted in their fruitful collaboration (1893-9) as the Beggarstaff Brothers. They designed numerous posters, for example that for the actor-manager Henry Irving's staging of Don Quixote at the Lyceum Theatre, London, in 1895, but the partnership was not a commercial success and Pryde's contribution to it delayed his progress as a painter. With a curious suddenness, however, his emotions fused into a romantic, dignified, sombre and highly personal vision, which for the next 20 years he expressed primarily in a series of paintings known as the Human Comedy. These are imaginary architectural compositions, sombre in palette and with small human figures. Their chief feature, exemplified in 13 of the paintings, is a great bed, based on his early memories of that of Mary Queen of Scots, which he had seen at Holyrood (e.g. The Doctor, c. 1908; London, Tate).

 

Founded in 1683, The Ashmolean re-opened on Saturday 7th November 2009. Their new display approach is "crossing culture crossing time." It was my first glimpse today, the much loved older museum is still here, but now enormously extended and plenty more to enjoy.

Supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Ashmolean is currently undergoing a £61 million redevelopment. Award-winning architect Rick Mather has designed a new building to replace all but the Grade I listed Cockerell building. His design will double the existing gallery space, allow environmental control, and create a dedicated Education Centre and conservation facilities.

 

I've tried to show something of the atmosphere and texture of the museum in many of the photos, I also wanted to convey the sense of movement and people's interaction with the art objects, therefore razor sharp clarity (were I to achieve that) was not my number one objective. This set will grow as I explore the new galleries, I hope you'll forgive me if I do not tag or describe everything right away as there is so much to take in!

Giorgio Strehler (August 14, 1921 – December 25, 1997) was an Italian opera and theatre director.

Strehler was born in Barcola, Trieste to an Austrian father and a Franco-Slovene mother; he grew up speaking Italian, but spoke French well and his German was passable. Suddenly becoming fatherless at the age of three, his grandfather, Olimpio Lovric, became his father figure. Olimpio was one of the finest horn players of his day and the impresario of the Teatro Comunale Giuseppe Verdi, Trieste's Opera House. When he was seven, his grandfather died and he moved to Milan with his mother and grandmother. Milan was to become Giorgio's home until the end of his life.

He has influenced three generations of actors and inspired many around the world. His influence in the English speaking world is less felt since he spoke little English and did not direct many plays in this language. However he was given the Légion d'honneur by the French government and was named director of the "Union of the Theatres of Europe" in Paris in 1985. The first Pan-European theater project. He was President of the jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1982.

The visual impact of his productions always concerned Strehler. The stage designers Luciano Damiani and later Ezio Frigerio closely collaborated with Strehler for many years, both for theatrical and operatic productions.

He died in Lugano, Switzerland. The funeral in Milan was attended with great participation of citizens and politicians. The parade lasted for over two days after leaving from the center of via Rovello of Piccola Scala. His ashes were deposited in the cemetery of Trieste.

Novgorod theatre for children and youth ''Mali'' has been founded in 1990, and headed by artistic director Nadezhda Alexeeva. The theatre is a member of International Association of theatres for children and youth (ASSITEJ), IETM member and an active participant of projects of Theatre Union of Russia; it has visited the theatre festivals in Japan, South Korea, Baltic countries, Norway, Hungary and others, also at Russian festivals in Moscow, Saint-Petersburg, Samara, Magnitogorsk, etc. The theatre has cooperated with directors and stage designers from Switzerland and France. In 1992 theatre ''Mali'' has founded the International theatre Kingfestival, dedicated to the mythology in theatrical sphere. The theatre has got its own acting course based on Novgorod University, which first theatre master was the famous director and theatre professor Zinoviy Korogodsky. Nowadays theatre ''Mali'' is a dynamically developing theatre space; there is a place for experiment, transformation, and innovational forms. The theatre is not afraid to expand the genre borders and creates both drama performances and performances in field of object theatre and movement theatre.

Novgorod Mali theatre for children and youth "Mali" è stato fondato nel 1990 ed è guidato dal direttore artistico Nadezhda Alexeeva. Oggi "Mali" è uno spazio teatrale in dinamico sviluppo, dove trovano posto la sperimentazione, la trasformazione e l’innovazione. Il teatro non ha paura di espandere i confini di genere e crea spettacoli teatrali e performance nel campo del teatro d’oggetti e del teatro di movimento. "Mali" ha ottenuto il Premio Speciale della Theatre Union of Russia "Per il contributo allo sviluppo del teatro russo per la gioventù" e il Golden Sign della Theatre Union of Russia.

Tower of London Remembers.

To mark the centenary anniversary of the First World War the Tower of London is creating an evolving art installation "Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red". Formed of 888,246 ceramic poppies by artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, each poppy represents a British military fatality during the war. The installation was officially unveiled on 5 August 2014, one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War and will be in place until 11 November 2014.

On 24 August I helped to build a just a little more of the installation by constructing and planting a batch of poppies. I believe it is now (as in these photos) about a quarter completed. Each poppy is a life lost - when it is completed maybe it will help to demonstrate the scale of those numbers which we really cannot imagine.

Don't miss the major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London, marking one hundred years since the first full day of Britain's involvement in the First World War. Created by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, with setting by stage designer Tom Piper, 888,246 ceramic poppies will progressively fill the Tower's famous moat over the summer. Each poppy represents a British military fatality during the war.

 

The poppies will encircle the iconic landmark, creating not only a spectacular display visible from all around the Tower but also a location for personal reflection. The scale of the installation intends to reflect the magnitude of such an important centenary creating a powerful visual commemoration.

"More than 770,000 have been planted by 16,000 volunteers from across the world. Tens of thousands more will bloom in the coming days until finally the last flower – the 888,246th – is placed there on Armistice Day, November 11. Each represents a British or Commonwealth soldier killed during the First World War, a single drop in an ocean of blood.

“I did think of all the numbers when I first put my poppy in,” says Mr Butler, 64, a veteran with 22 years service in the Royal Hussars. “But when you see it now, it just takes your breath away.”

At the weekend, queues stretching back up over Tower Bridge were testament to the fact that the crimson tide lapping against the stonework of the Tower is set to become the enduring image of remembrance in this centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War. Every ceramic poppy on display has been bought by the public, purchased online at £25 each, raising more than £1 million for each of the six armed forces charities involved."
