The interior of the church. In the centre of the image is the Sanctuary, a simple space with no choir stalls or screen, and no window above the altar. Unusually it is at the west end of the church, after the building was bombed in 1940 it was decided to rebuild facing the river Mersey.

Above the Sanctuary hangs the Rood which depicts Christ with his mother and St. John the Evangelist. The Rood is designed in the shape of an anchor and is carved from the timbers of an old bell frame.

To the left is St. Peter’s Chapel, the cross which can just be seen above the altar is made from charred timbers, these were recovered the morning after the bombing in 1940.

To the right is the Maritime Chapel, this Chapel was created in 1993, reinforcing the tradition of St. Nicks being a sailors church.

The butterflies hanging from the ceiling all around the church have been put in place by INSPIRE, a peacemaking initiative for young people, schools & communities, to promote peace in local communities and the world.

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow

Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,

When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,

But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer,

With a little old driver, so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;

"Now, DASHER! now, DANCER! now, PRANCER and VIXEN!

On, COMET! on CUPID! on, DONNER and BLITZEN!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,

So up to the house-top the coursers they flew,

With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my hand, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.

His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly,

That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,

HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL,

I’d walked into the city centre from Otterspool, around 5km, and I’d also to walk back, so I’d only taken the lightweight kit lens with me. Try as I might I couldn’t get the whole of the church in the shot. With my back against the Royal Liver Building, this is the best I could manage.

In 1257 the original chapel of St. Mary del Quay stood near the site of this church. From the earliest times the church marked the spot where sailors arrived in Liverpool.

In 1759 a coastal defence battery of 12 guns was placed outside the church to protect the port and surrounding area from attack by French privateers.

In the late 19th century George’s Dock, which was situated right in front of the church was filled in to make way for the construction of the Liver Buildings, so the church lost its waterfront position.

During WWII the church took several direct hits during bombing raids in 1940 and 1941. The main body of the church was destroyed and just the bell tower remained.

The bell tower was renovated in 2005, it is dedicated to all the Liverpool seafarers. It replaced an earlier tower which collapsed in 1810 killing 25 people, including a class of schoolgirls. The new tower dates from 1815. It contains 13 bells and is topped by a gilded weather vane in the shape of a ship.

The current church was consecrated in 1952, it still retains its strong maritime links, even though the church is in the heart of the business and commercial district of the city.

“Barbara Rundback, curator of holiday exhibitions at the Norman Rockwell Museum, loves the lights and magic that come with the Christmas season. However, this year, she felt the need to focus on ‘The Spirit of Giving.’

“In this poignant illustration by J. C. Leyendecker, Santa is ringing a bell for donations and a ruddy-faced newsboy is shown giving Santa his earnings. ‘I looked at the newsies from the turn of the century and how much work they even had to get 30 cents average a day, and here’s this little boy giving his money to that bell-ringing Santa,’ Rundback said.”

This painting was Rockwell’s eighth picture of Santa Claus on the cover of The Post. There was a world war going on in 1942 and the bad news is all over the newspaper. The front page is full of negative words: WAR, HITLER, BOMB, Enemy Raids, Pay Taxes, etc. Then Santa breaks through all that madness and wishes everybody a “Merry Christmas,” news we all needed to hear.
