Day 21 of 365. Every morning when I sit down for my coffee and squint through the sun streaming thru the window, I wonder if we're ever going to get window coverings.

This aperture allows people in the side chapel to see the altar where communion is celebrated. This may pre-date the building of the side chapel so the altar would have been visible from outside the church.

Pete escaped today (no shock there), and out I went, armed with my little can of tuna. He quickly surrendered and Newton also got a little tuna. Pete gets tuna for coming home and Newton gets it for staying home. A short while later, I went upstairs and there they were - slugged out on the only soft surface that receives direct sunlight.

Cwd173 : Light in the frame. The Kodak guides from the 70’s will tell you to put the sun behind the photographer, shining on the subjects face. This invariably results in pictures where the subjects are squinting into a bright vacation sun. Your challenge is to present an image where a light source is in the frame. The light in your image does not need to be the sole source. Realize having a light in your image may freak your exposure meter out. Have an idea of the image you’re after, then execute it. Don’t be satisfied until you achieve your vision.

I just love how the water runs over her face and how it distorts it slightly! And then it looks like water hair running down the back.

We enjoyed beautiful weather for the graduation. We were invited by Nelleke. Lots of my Sunday School students were graduating as well this year.

Located in the nave, east end of north wall. Please zoom in to see the descriptions on the memorials and tablets. One of the brass memorials is to a Lieutenant in the Grenadier Guards killed in action in 1916 at the Battle of the Somme for which he was awarded the Military Cross.

At the bottom of the picture you can just see the tops of wood panelling running across the lower north wall. Behind the wall is the tower and there was once a door from here to the tower. One of the churchwardens told me that if you look very closely you can just see a small gap in the panelling where the door used to be. I couldn't see it but I'll look more closely next time ! Another thing I'll look for is an “aperture”, at the east end of the south wall of the nave which is recorded as being the “Leper’s squint”, a place to facilitate those with leprosy to receive communion without being part of the congregation.

In the middle of the picture you can see two standing cherubs and heraldry on what is one of the earliest memorials, originally from St Chad's in Shrewsbury and by Van der Hagen a Dutch sculptor who settled in Shrewsbury. To the right is a splendid marble rocco memorial to Richard Lyster, 1766 and Anne his wife 1871. Thought to have been designed (?) or 'signed' (?) by T.F. Pritchard, a Shrewsbury based architect. Curiously, at the bottom of the St Chad's memorial to Thomas Lyster who died 3rd March 1701, the age is missing. If you then look at a memorial behind you on the south wall, there is a memorial to Abigal, wife of Basil Wood and daughter of Robert Leighton of Wattlesborough Esq and her age is missing too.

If you look at the Lyster memorial second from right of picture, you'll see two cherubs sitting either side of a large urn. The one on the right is seated and above his right shoulder is a hat on a pole. This is a comic reference to a scene in the House of Commons when the said Lyster protested against a decision of the House by keeping his hat on inside the chamber.

St Michael & All Angels at Alberbury in Shropshire is a Collegiate Saxon church founded between the 7th and10th centuries and was re-consecrated on 4th May 1290 by Bishop Swinfield of Hereford following the cessation of disputes along the Welsh border. However, there may have been a smaller stone or even a wooden framed church on or near the site, similar to the one at nearby Melverley.

At one time, Alberbury was the largest village between Shrewsbury and Oswestry and had two ale houses, one of which was called “The Green Dragon”. Neighbouring Loton had a Parliamentary leaning during the civil war and local historians tell of one battle in the area. Since then, the only other warlike association was during the Second World War when a chemical munitions camp was built on the grounds of Loton Park, current home of hill climbing events. Despite the camp buildings only standing a few years, you can still see the outlines of where the buildings stood if you look down onto the area using Google Earth. You can also see some of the foundations if you walk the public footpath through the park.

The church itself is regarded as being unusually big for such a small village and has an impressive saddleback tower, dating back to around 1200 AD. The Loton Chapel was added in the 1320's and at least one reference on the internet suggests it contains a 'pre-Raphaelite window by Sir Edward Burne Jones' (please see associated photograph in the photostream).

The church is part of the Parish of Alberbury with Cardeston and services are held on the first Sunday of each month, current covid restrictions allowing. Parking is over the main road outside Alberbury village hall. For more information about services please see:

www.achurchnearyou.com/church/10392/

There are more interesting descriptions of Alberbury including a reference to its 'local pronunciation' as “Obberbury”* in the following website:

www.parishmouse.co.uk/shropshire/alberbury-shropshire-fam...

* I can believe that as I've come across many such Shropshire-y-fied examples of shortenings of county names. “An-erd' for Hanwood and 'Ponn-sit' for Pontesbury being but two.

I purchased reflective harnesses for the dogs along with reflective leashes today. You feel as if you are taking your life into your hand walking at night around here as the roads are dark with no street lights. And though there isn't much traffic the roads twist and turn and there is no edge to really walk on. The reflectiveness was a bust. It was an imprint on the collar rather than reflective tape stitched on top. I am going to return them and purchase something online that I hope will work out better but I discovered that walking the dogs in a harness is fantastic. They didn't pull, did not get the leash caught under their legs and were much better walkers. I think they liked it better!

I have also been struggling with Tiffany & Co. I ordered a bowl for a wedding gift. When I tried to purchase it Sunday night online, the website gave me an error saying they couldn't confirm my card. Thinking I may have typed the number in wrong, I tried again. Same message. So Monday I called Tiffany's and ordered over the phone. Tuesday I was checking my debit card balance and realized that I had three pending purchases for $200.00. Thinking I may soon be receiving three bowls, I phoned them and explained the situation. No, they said, they only show one order for me. The next call was of course to my bank. They were very understanding but told me there was nothing they could do as the transaction are pending. They will have to wait until they get denied by Tiffany's and will show up back in my balance. UGH....in the meantime my checking account balance is down nearly $600.00. You know forty buck thirty bucks, I might be a little bit more understanding but six hundred well, that is my working cash flow. My cash...in purgatory. Tiffany's says it's not their fault the bank says they can't do anything what is a girl to do? Complain!!!

I am so thankful for friends who will listen to your story and empathize with you when things don't go your way!
