Shorthampton's most beautiful scene is this small painting within the squint that looks into the chancel from the nave. Mary is holding Jesus whilst another child looks on, as Jesus holds a bird; this is believed to be the 'miracle of the clay birds', wherein the young Jesus, whilst playing with other children, makes figures of birds from clay and brings them to life.
All Saints church at Shorthampton is a true delight, a tiny two-cell building situated in near isolation in an unspoilt rural location (there is very little village to speak of). It is easily missed with no tower to make it a landmark, a simple bellcote sits between nave and chancel instead.
The real treasure of this church is immediately apparent open entering this small, unpretensious building. Not only is the whole interior a charming glimpse of a pre-Victorian church (showing no sign of the often heavy restoration most experienced at this time) the walls feature several significant sections of 15th century wall painting with various fragmentary subjects around the nave, all in their limited but vivid palette of an earthy red, grey-black, white and yellow. After the Reformation the murals were covered with limewash, and another layer of wall painting added with biblical texts and a Royal Arms over the chancel arch in place of the Doom (of which fragments, such as the lion, still remain).
This is one of those churches that instantly takes your breath away, not for splendour but for charm, and the rarity of it's painted fragments that provide a glimpse of a true medieval church interior.
My first inclination was to name this image "Squints wondering what the fuck dad is doing with that camera in his face". But that seemed too long.
(isn't he just so handsome though?)
Chernobyl Bob told me to look up and Apples in My Bra told me to find a shadow. The unfortunate child of this seemingly perfect match is me looking like a complete grumpy cow. Sorry! I'm not feeling grumpy at all - the sun is shining, the biggest part of clearing the back garden after winter is done, it's time to kick back and enjoy what's left of the weekend... so I'm not going in search of that elusive, perfect shot. You can have this one and lump it!

Me and Jill selfie before sunset in the desert!!
We stayed overnight at a desert camp in Oman.
Very hot! We went dune bashing, sunset watching, rode camels, camped in carpet tents with no a/c, evening meal and breakfast included! Superb!
Victor is squinting and his eye is watery/gooey. I called and described it to the vet, and she wants to see him. Poor Victor!
We saw the Olympic torch as it passed through town on Tuesday. During the long wait we spent quite a bit of time dodging raindrops and people watching. More about the Torch on the blog: www.theukmama.com/2012/07/the-olympic-torch-in-windsor/

We walked out on this beach on the Gulf of Mexico (!!!) and even though it was ridiculously overcast, it was BRIGHT.
Fact: I love sunglasses, but for more of a head accessory. My face is shaped weird and they either rub my eyelashes/eyebrows or won't stay on. I should use it as an excuse to buy some really expensive Chanel or Marc Jacob glasses but I think Shea would kill me :)
