The GFA Softball and Baseball team joined a handful of other Dragons athletic programs, taking part in spring training over the second half of our two-week break.
As part of a recent trend of opener spring training games, The New York Mets host and exhibition game with the University of Michigan Wolverines. That's an awesome spring break trip. Not all these kids will make it to MLB. But, this game is a memory they will keep forever. I'm glad I was here to witness it.
Historically, 78 University of Michigan baseball players made it to MLB. Derek Jeter was offered a scholarship to play there and even took classes. But, for $800,000 he was drafted to the NY Yankees and you probably know the rest.
The most notable one for me is Jim Abott who was born without a right hand. He went on to be a gold medal Olympian in 1988 and to play for 10 in the Major League level. One day in 1993, he even threw a no hitter. I remember watching him at the Old Comiskey Park where he caught a line drive back at him, hit by Carlton Fisk.
A couple of other things I noticed were two female umpires. Both in the shadows of Bernice Gera(graduate of Florida Baseball School and first female minor league Umpire in 1972) She would pass away in 1992, a pioneer in baseball. Wally Backman of the 1986 World Champions Team was coaching third, on track to remake his coaching career. Good luck to him.
