Spring Equinox, March 2023.

One of two photos taken from the balconies of our condo building in Toronto today. You can see our iconic landmark, the C N Tower, formerly known as the world's tallest free standing structure. Happy Spring Equinox!

Another shot from the archives...

So different from what we got last Saturday. Given the choice I think I prefer smooth reflections over clouds in the sky. Of course reflections AND clouds would be best. :-)

PS: The more I look at this, I'm reminded of the great Canadian artist Alex Colville.

We're just past the Vernal Equinox where the day and night are of equal length. I'm exploring the themes of balance and springtime with a triptych if related photos.

Temps will dip into the 20s tonight here in our corner of Alabama on the Elk River, and below freezing in New Orleans. I fear for ALL our plants! These are some of my last blooming daffodils. I should pick them all for a big bouquet before the cold gets them. I hope the cold doesn't wreak more havoc with my palms in NOLA- I may have lost the two in the big pots by the gate . . . :(

Saturday morning I had signed up again for another sunrise shoot at the Deering Estate. Being the start of spring the sun was again rising in the center of the keyhole boat basin.

It was a beautiful still morning, albeit cloudless - a few clouds would have been nice, but oh well, you make due with what you get.

I shot this a few minutes after sunrise as the sun was coming up behind the little mangrove island to the left of the boat basin entrance.

The spring equinox fast approaches. However rain may spoil the sunrise in the south.

are in full bloom on the first day of spring... ;-)

Yep, while pretty when blooming, the Bradford pear trees kind of stink. And they're an invasive, imported species.

From news.ncsu.edu/2022/03/bounty-offered-on-bradford-pear-trees/:

"Oten: Bradford pears cannot self-pollinate, but they can reproduce if they get pollinated by any other variety of the Pyrus calleryana species. Their offspring spread into natural forests and disturbed areas like roadsides. When they escape plantings, they are called Callery pears. These invasive trees have white, showy flowers, but they have huge thorns that are inches long and can puncture tractor tires, so it can be very problematic to manage them. They’re in suburban and rural areas, as well as in natural forests. Right now, they are blooming, and I see them everywhere when driving around."

The article also announces an inventive "bounty" on the Bradford pear! :-)

Taken as the sun was breaking the horizon. It was amazing to watch. I don't think I ever had such a clear view of the sun rising.

And I can't believe it's been a month already since I took this... where did the time go?

a bluebird sang to me...

So very fitting it has returned to the yard for the Spring Equinox!

>>Pima People

The people of Pima considered the bluebird as a symbol of transformation, growth, and the harbinger of the season of renewal, i.e., spring. There is a famous legend surrounding the bluebird among the people of Pima.

Once there was an ugly bird that stumbled upon a magical lake and bathed in its mystical water. It was transformed into the beautiful bluebird as a reward for not fearing the sea and the change. This is why they consider the bluebird to be a good transition mentor and a symbol of a new tomorrow.<<

This photo was captured during the spring equinox within only several days after a bomb cyclone moved through Colorado and dumped lots of snow. Views from the San Luis Valley showcase the stark contrast between the sagebrush flats and the abruptly rising Sangre de Cristo Mountains. I never get tired of this view. Thanks for looking!

Today at 10:01 CET, the Sun appeared directly above Earth’s equator, marking the Spring Equinox! 🌸

The equinox in the northern hemisphere happens twice a year, around the 20 March (spring equinox) and the 22 September (autumn equinox). At this moment, our planet is neither tilted towards nor away from the Sun, creating nearly equal day/night. 🌓

This stunning Meteosat-12 image taken earlier this morning showcases the boundary between day and night running straight through the poles.

Interrupting your regularly scheduled mural photos to wish you a happy spring equinox! These photos were taken this week in Shaw. I'm not sure if they're cherry trees or dogwoods? Regardless, they brightened my week. So happy to see the blossoms returning.

A sunny view from 'Buckstones' for Spring Equinox.

It is that time of year again (it happens twice) when the relative angle of Earth is perpendicular to the Sun, causing equal incoming solar energy to the Northern and Southern hemispheres - as well as equal day and nighttime. At 7:20 ET on March 20, 2013, Earth was at its equinox. At 7:45 ET, the GOES-13 satellite captured this full disk image of Earth. The visible imagery sensor on GOES requires sunlight to “see” clouds, and so it provides a useful example of the equinox. In this image the GOES imagery extends to each of the poles since the entire hemisphere is equally lit. After the equinox passes today, the Northern Hemisphere will be more lit than the Southern Hemisphere – causing the seasons.

(Note: the Sun in this image is artificially created, though the GOES spacecraft does have sensors continually monitoring the Sun for solar activity.)

The Lenten Moon is the first full moon in March. So called because it falls during Lent. 06 March to 18 April 2019.

Shot from Highfields Park, Lenton, Nottingham on the last day of Winter, first day of Spring. 20 March 2019.

The Lenten Moon is also known as the Worm Moon, Sap Moon and Crow Moon.

Worm Moon. As temperatures warm, earthworm casts begin to appear and birds begin finding food.

Sap Moon. Marking the time of tapping maple trees, is a Colonial American variation.

Crow Moon. As the last full Moon of Winter. The more northern tribes of the northeastern United States knew this as the Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of Winter.
