“Blossom by blossom the spring begins.” - Algernon Charles Swinburne
The title is "Spring."
In the back of my mind, I wished to say "Spring?" but decided not to support any emotional hesitations I might be feeling. Still, although the heart was willing, I couldn't quite muster a "Spring!", so I decided to feel gratitude for what simply was, without questioning it all too deeply.
It was 61 degrees and there were rays of a warming sun peaking through spaces in the early morning clouds. The wind was crisp but soothing, and full of the smell of fresh earth coming alive. Strange, but I didn't remember passing these Crocuses yesterday. Were they there? Or did they jump out of the warming, softening grip of winter's soil overnight?
"Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's Party! ..." - Robin Williams
I had one of those urges we all sometimes get, to stop the world for just a few moments so I might gather this morning up in my arms and hold it closely, gently, passionately next to my heart like a newborn. I tried to practice my meditation breathing; slow in for six seconds, hold for six, slow out for six more, but I wanted to fill my nose with earthy bounty.
So I switched to dog breathing; short, intense, rapid breaths in and out through the nose. Life was coming alive, as was I.
Yes, I was a bit greedy, perhaps as well, a bit needy after this winter. So what? The air was what I needed, a scratch to an itch I only faintly knew I had.
I had checked out the weather for the day before walking out the door. Oh my.
“In the spring, I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours.” - Mark Twain
Yep, several of those different kinds of weather were on tap for this day.
But that was to come, it wasn't happening now. Even though the wind was going to turn from caressing us from the south to stinging us from the north, dragging the temps down with it from 61 to about 34 degrees in a few hours, I determined I wasn't going to let that drag me down along with it.
Spring. Simply as it is.
Sometimes a leap of faith is called upon to overrule the shadows of doubt.
