California Gull, immature, Spooner's Cove, Montaña de Oro SP, Los Osos, CA
"This is a Cinnamon Gull, the extreme variety. We have lots of cinnamon birds here in Half Moon Bay, but usually they are much less extreme than this. We have hypothesized that they are from interior areas and that this is a photo-chemical reaction going on, perhaps a mix of the hypersalinity or some other chemical in the lakes like Mono Lake, mixed with sun exposure that creates this. The early juveniles we see (presumably all SF Bay area breeders) do not show any tendency to the cinnamon plumage. But once they molt, they look normal. You can see them literally molting out of this once the back and scapulars start changing. So I do not think they are necessarily albertaensis, likely our californicus, but I do think they are from the interior. We still do not understand how this happens."

This is spoon 1 of 12 I am designing over the next 12 weeks. The theme is based n a photo that I chose at random of a wedding. The form for each spoon is to be based on, or inspired by a mussel shell.
This 8" spoon has a bowl of the same shape as my three other spoons from Iran, all of different sizes. It is finely and ornately carved, with an inscription from a 13th century contemporary of Rumi. Since the inscription (see adjoining photo) speaks of a drink (Sharab) from the beloved, this spoon shape may have been used for syrups or sorbets.
New gelato options in Santa Barbara. I had the honey fig mascarpone, although the pink grapefruit was very good.

I saw the recipe on the lovely 3191 Miles Apart blog. I love it! My wooden spoons have never looked better.
