He stood there in that amazing light, and his smile stayed there even after I pressed the shutter.

I asked for his name and he still kept quiet, and when I was talking to another kid, he disappeared into thin air.

Someone told me he's mute. I really need to find out the truth.

I go back to school too soon.

Find me on Facebook and Tumblr.

I upgraded my Photomatix software, and was able to convert my raw images. This is the result of 3 merged photos of different exposures, slight noise reduction, and a little sharpening. A spectacular morning, and a great day for our flickr outing.

I'm still trying to catch up on your photostreams, but made some progress last night. Will hopefully finish looking at your photos this evening.

When the boys had grown into handsome youths, the older one wearied of life at home and of hearing his brother always spoken of as the future king. He longed to go out into the world and seek adventures of his own. One day as he was pouring out his heart to the little horse that had been his companion from infancy, much to his amazement the horse spoke to him with a human voice and said:

“Since you are not happy at home, go out into the world. But do not go without your father’s permission. I advise you to take no one with you and to mount no horse but me. This will bring you good luck.”

The prince asked the horse how it happened that he could talk like a human being.

“Don’t ask me about that,” the horse said, “for I can’t tell you. But I wish to be your friend and counselor and I will be as long as you obey me.”

When the Boys Had Grown into Handsome Youths

The prince promised to do as the horse advised. He went at once to his father to beg his leave to ride [81]out into the world. At first his father was unwilling to let him go but his mother gave her permission at once. By dint of coaxing he finally won his father’s consent. Of course the king wanted the prince to set forth in a manner befitting his rank with a great company of men and horses. But the prince insisted that he wished to go unattended.

“Why, my dear father, do I need any such retinue as you suggest? Let me have some money for the journey and let me ride off alone on my own little horse. This will give me more freedom and less trouble.”

What a turnout! I am so proud of Scotland for being so incredibly engaged in the political process.

This runpast got spoken about for quite a few years after the fact.... there must have been ducks in that pond.

Sometimes everything just comes together, days of gloom, loco failures and diesel haulage gave way to an unplanned afternoon behind steam with the foul weather clearing away.

Pattern:

Plain Spoken from The Modern Quilt Workshop, modified

Fabric:

Kona cotton solids, prewashed, all from stash (mostly purchased from Hancock's of Paducah)

Batting:

Warm and White cotton batting from Joann's

Thread:

100% cotton Gutermann thread from Joann's

Basted together with quilting safety pins.

Notes:

This was intended to be queen-sized but ended up closer to a twin due to cutting errors, shrinkage, and a general unwillingness to buy more fabric. The rows alternate between taller and shorter rows, which was my fix after I misremembered the block dimensions while cutting. Pieces from a second(!), width-cutting error were incorporated into a much smaller quilt top.

The most frustrating thing was watching my quilt top distort because I didn't have a quilting extension table. I don't think I will ever invest in an extra-large table with a custom-fit opening for my machine, but, on the other hand, a big book to the left of the machine isn't satisfactory either. Next time I will try starching my fabric while piecing to see how much that helps when it comes time to quilt.

Also for next time: Write cutting dimensions on a post-it and review before cutting sessions. Use appropriately colored thread for piecing.

What is it about this week?

I went out for a walk tonight feeling even more unenthused and uninspired than yesterday. Thankfully I did not feel this way for long. All sorts of red things presented themselves and my enthusiasm quickly returned!

I had several options in hand and was on my way home when I spotted a push bike parked on the street, it's red tyres, red chain and red helmet all instantly catching my eye! A very unique find I thought and worthy of my photo of the day!

Looks like it was fairly new too as it was pristine! Not only that it was quite difficult to shoot too because just behind it was an aluminium bench seat that was reflecting the sun like you wouldn't believe!

Close to 100 years old and still going strong, Tepu' Apung is one of the most direct and outspoken elders I've met in Bario. Always well known for her intelligence and sharpness, quite literally, her other name, Beken Ayu, means "something different" in Kelabit - and she lives up to it. On this particular day she decided to give me a Kelabit name, but her delivery was uniquely serious and classic Tepu' Apung: "Chris is a girl's name. You can't use that name anymore - your new name is Giak!"

She spends most of her time at Rumah Labang just spending time around people and the environment - be it relaxing by the fire, making sure everyone has eaten ("Kuman? Kuman!") or sharing stories from the past. Some of her stories are even so detailed and complex she claims she can't even share them with us as they would literally take days to complete.

Her spoken Kelabit is very deep with not all words completely understood by younger Kelabits - as parts of her lexicon are not commonly used on a daily basis. Any misunderstanding is usually met with Sarawak Malay to get the point across. Her beads are also of particular importance to her - as they are to most Kelabits (especially in past times where they were highly valued), and if she is not found in the kitchen she can undoubtedly be found beading in her room.

Be aware though, If one wishes to engage Tepu' in discussion, they should be commited to discussion. She doesn't joke around and she commands honest respect. For that commitment, however, one will be rewarded with stories of Kelabit past available nowhere else and uniquely Beken Ayu.
