A flash of brilliance on a quiet hedgerow—the Yellowhammer is sunlight made feathered. Perched delicately among the fresh spring growth, this male stood momentarily still, his vivid yellow plumage catching the soft overcast light like a note held in perfect silence.
Photographed on farmland in the Goring area of Berkshire, this image represents more than a captured moment—it’s a quiet homage to a species whose presence has long been part of the rural British soundscape. The Yellowhammer’s melodic refrain, often likened to “a little bit of bread and no cheese”, once echoed widely across open fields and tangled thickets. Today, its song is heard less often—a soft-spoken reminder of the delicate balance within our countryside.
Framed by the subtle texture of young leaves and weathered branches, this scene offered not only a visual contrast but a chance to pause—to observe a species as timeless as the land it inhabits. No dramatic flight or flurry, just a calm, dignified presence that rewards patience and respect.
In an age of noise and haste, encounters like this are quietly profound. They ask nothing of us but awareness—and offer, in return, a fleeting glimpse of the wild in perfect harmony.

Monastery of Sant Pau del Camp (Saint Paul in the fields)
10th - 14th centuries
Barcelona, Catalonia
The ancient church of Sant Pau del Camp is located in the old town of Barcelona, in the Raval neighborhood.
Outside its walls, the noise of its narrow streets is continuous and sometimes deafening... shops, bars and restaurants where hundreds of different languages are spoken...a barracks for the armed forces of the Spanish State located in Barcelona where Spanish is spoken... a Public School where it is intended that these children from all over the world can learn to speak our language, Catalan....and a disco, where the language of music rules.
And there...in the midle of all that jumble of noise, music and different languages, Sant Pau del Camp, becomes a line of peace and silence. Its ancient thick walls protect us and give us a moment of calm. Sitting in its small and beautiful cloister we can escape for a while from the problems of our day to day and enjoy a time of reflection and introspection with ourselves.
Alone, but accompanied by the energy of the silent and wise stones of Sant Pau del Camp
Even before the sun has risen on the River Maas between Rotterdam and Dordrecht.
A still crystal clear morning with stunning lighting and reflections.
Sometimes it's appropriate to be loud, exuberant, and extroverted. Like at a football game. Or when you just won the Publisher's Clearing House sweepstakes. Woo! (I have no trouble in the loud department) Other times a quiet manner and softly spoken word can accomplish much more and have an even greater impact on those around.

these photos were all edited in a bit of an interesting and new way for me.. i thought i would share! i first edited all these images with the london preset www.digitalfilmactions.com/#/london-lightroom-4-preset/ in lightroom, and then after opening them in photoshop i applied the action softly spoken www.digitalfilmactions.com/photoshop-actions#/softly-spok... on top of them to wash them out with a lovely pink tone. i think im going to start doing this more often for something a little different :) let me know what you think!
Stories, like people and butterflies and songbirds' eggs and human hearts and dreams, are also fragile things, made up of nothing stronger or more lasting than twenty-six letters and a handful of punctuation marks. Or they are words on the air, composed of sounds and ideas-abstract, invisible, gone once they've been spoken-and what could be more frail than that? But some stories, small, simple ones about setting out on adventures or people doing wonders, tales of miracles and monsters, have outlasted all the people who told them, and some of them have outlasted the lands in which they were created.” - Neil Gaiman

i hope you're having a great week!
There are the ones who haunt and there are ones that are haunted. And they are those that are both in a lonely anguish that freezes you to a spot where you cannot move even as the world continues around you.

Taken further back in St. Patrick's Cathedral, New York, October, 2014. This magnificent cathedral was, at this time, undergoing extensive renovations, both inside and out. The entrance area was free of scaffolding, but the closer you got to the Sacristy the more scaffolding there was.
While TumbleWorld may suggest a RE-viewing of the world and the concepts that lead to it, here there is more of an acknowledgement of the deeper need in people to not only build ( at one time ) gigantic structures whose purpose was to inspire true, jaw dropping awe, but also to call on something deeper inside us that enables and enriches us like nothing in the "rational" world. The "tumbled" Sacristy ( at the top of the image ) may suggest that overturning of reason in order to "enter through the eye of a needle". It's been suggested that other dimensions don't exactly sit "parallel" to ours but at sharp angles spiralling out on points along a Fibonacci spiral. So that religious or spiritual 'entering' really is about "turning your head around".
The phenomenon of human faith here is celebrated in all it's mystery.
The title comes affectionately from Pink Floyd, from their album, "The Dark Side of the Moon". It's in the reprise of "Breathe", just before "The Great Gig in the Sky".
Music Link: "Prophecy Theme" - Brian Eno, from the "Dune" soundtrack recording. I chose this instrumental piece over the Pink Floyd for the music link because of its greater affinity with the feeling I'm hoping to generate with this image. Beautiful video footage.

A face, lost and full of sorrow
self-portrait
I was doing fine. I was pulling through a season of healing and had just started going out again, the slow thaw of rekindling relationships with friends and acquaintances, of being present in simple joys like just saying hello to people, having an evening out, feeling the sun on my face. And then...
The Q word--that stupid, infernal Q word: Quarantine. I can be alone...for small intervals of time, but, ultimately, I am a social creature seeking connection or even just to charm you and make you laugh. I've watched more TV than I have in my entire life, movies, painted walls, grouted floors, read books, decided to try new things, brush up on skills, improve myself, blah, blah, blah. I have started to unravel--a frayed ribbon being pulled away from the spool with increasing momentum. An unmistakable untethering. I feel hollowed out all over again and lost in a place of neverwhere.

A panoramic shot of New Brighton's waterfront from the Floral Pavillion over to the Liverpool docklands, clouds always make for a more dramatic sunrise or sunset.
I love the anticipation of landscape photography. I love arriving at a beautiful location well before the sunset and finding the sky full of beautiful clouds. I set up my camera and tripod in my chosen location and just wait. I sit and wonder how the clouds will light up. Will there be mind blowing colors or will a bank of clouds form along the western horizon and block out the sun leaving only gray?
As the clouds just start to fill with color my heart rate begins to increase. The color builds....OMG!!....it's gonna happen!! It's gonna go off for sure!! Well, that's what I was thinking right about the time I took this photograph. I've learned from experience that when the sky just starts to fill with color you better start shooting...like NOW! Because sometimes the light will fade off quickly without any warning. If you snap a few right at the start, then at least you may come away with something.
I admit that I was disappointed when the sun disappeared behind a dark wall of clouds just above the ocean horizon. The light and colors vanished. I chimped frantically through the few images I had recorded. I wasn't real excited. But I dunno...this one is growing on me. It has a calm feel to it and the soft colors really reflect the colors of the beach. I love collecting seashells and I've noticed how the shells seem to have these colors and tones. Maybe it's so they can blend in with their surroundings. Anyway....this image makes me feel good and reminds me of walking along the smooth sandy beaches around Santa Cruz, CA searching for treasures.
It's not a dazzler. It's soft spoken....like a beautiful girl that doesn't know how beautiful she is yet. My Website
The Langley Good Times Cruise-In is an annual event held the Saturday after Labour Day in downtown Langley City in BC Canada.
Each year the venue grows with not only added cars, trucks and motorcycles but the entertainment just gets better and better. The event is a labour of love not only by the participants but for the organizers and volunteers as well. It benefits several charities and everyone has a "Good Time" There is so much to see, it is next to impossible to take in the entire event so here you will see just a portion of what I had the privilege of experiencing. Please enjoy your trip back in time. There will be more to come when time allows.

Two butterflies went out at noon
And waltzed above a stream,
Then stepped straight through the firmament
And rested on a beam;
And then together bore away
Upon a shining sea, --
Though never yet, in any port,
Their coming mentioned be.
If spoken by the distant bird,
If met in ether sea
By frigate or by merchantman,
Report was not to me.
