Split is the largest Dalmatian city, the second-largest urban centre in Croatia, and the seat of Split-Dalmatia County. The city is located on the shores of the Mediterranean, more specifically on the eastern shore of the Adriatic Sea, spreading over a central peninsula and its surroundings, with its metropolitan area including the many surrounding seaside towns as well. An intraregional transport hub, the city is a link to the numerous surrounding Adriatic islands and the Apennine peninsula, as well as a popular tourist destination.
Split is also one of the oldest cities in the area, and is traditionally considered just over 1,700 years old, while archaeological research relating to the ancient Greek colony of Aspálathos (6th century BC) establishes the city as being several hundred years older.

Es la principal ciudad de la región de Dalmacia, la capital del condado de Split-Dalmacia y la segunda ciudad más populosa del paÃs tras Zagreb, de la que dista 380 km. Es un importante puerto pesquero y base naval del Adriático, asà como un centro cultural y turÃstico importante; la ciudad antigua es una joya arquitectónica, declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad en 1979. En su entorno existen astilleros, fábricas de cemento y de plástico, industrias madereras, vinicultoras e industrias de procesamiento de alimentos.
Con vistas al mar Adriático y respaldada por las montañas que rodean la ciudad de Split en Dalmacia es como un museo viviente. En ella aun siguen en pie las antiguas construcciones romanas que dan un aspecto interesante. Ahora, las tiendas de lujo y cafeterÃas se encuentran entre estos hermosos edificios.
Split fue fundada cuando Diocleciano construyó su casa de retiro en la zona. Nacido cerca de Salona, este poderoso soldado llegó a gobernar el Imperio Romano durante dos décadas. Cuando el palacio fue construido en su totalidad renunció y se retiró a su natal Dalmacia, donde pasó sus últimos años. Siglos más tarde fue dominada por Venecia (1420-1797).

Split Rock Lighthouse is a popular tourist spot on Minnesota's North Shore. I had the joy of camping out one night just a few yards off the shoreline of Lake Superior at the campground there. To find out exactly where this is, check the geo-tag.
Split is a delightful city on the Adriatic and is over 1700 years old. The emperor Diocletian built a palace here at the turn of the 4th century CE to spend his life after emperor-hood. It's more like a fortress but that's the way things were back then. Everything has been built right up to the palace walls and I never did find a spot where a representative photo could be taken so here are some other buildings instead. The central photo is the Church of St. Francis and the wonderful building second from the left up top is a concert hall.
