Ithaca Falls is a waterfall located within the city of Ithaca, New York. It is the last of a series of waterfalls along the hanging valley formed where Fall Creek intersects the glacial trough of Cayuga Lake. The falls are in an amphitheater formed by freezing and thawing of the weak shale which makes up most of the gorge walls. The splash pool, and the creek just below the falls, are a popular spot for fly fishing.
The area around the base of the falls was owned by Cornell University for many years, before being sold to the City of Ithaca in 2000 as a part of environmental cleanup. The area has been a popular, if dilapidated, park for many years; currently it is undergoing a major redesign and rebuild. In June 2016, the Ithaca Common Council voted to demolish a house directly north of the falls and add the parcel to the park. The city had acquired the house after the owner failed to pay property taxes.
Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is at the Yellowstone Hotspot Volcano in northwestern Wyoming, USA.
Tardy Geyser is a frequently-erupting member of the Sawmill Group in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyers Basin. It is located 19 meters southeast of Sawmill Geyser. They geyser has a subcircular basin with a centrally-located, funnel-like vent surrounded by a nicely pustulose geyserite platform. Ringing the platform is a splash pool that contains discoidal geyser beads, many of which have become cemented together. Tardy Geyser has two runoff channels. The more frequently used channel runs roughly southwest toward the Firehole River. The other channel extends northeast from Tardy’s basin, then heads east, then heads roughly south toward the Firehole River. This geyser usually has short-duration eruptions that last a few seconds to several minutes - this happens when nearby Sawmill Geyser is active. During a “Tardy Cycle”, the geyser will erupt continuously for 1 to 3 hours with no Sawmill activity. At such times, Tardy Geyser is the dominant member of the Sawmill Group. The northeast-to-east-to-south runoff channel is used during Tardy Cycle activity.

I was mystified by people telling me that they used to play in the splash pools at Shandy Park. I thought that they must be mistaken.
I knew Shandy Park from some work that PATH (Play Association Tower Hamlets) had done and it was dry in the extreme. New designs for the play space had been wrangled over and eventually a reasonable playspace was created there. But what had gone before was dull. Nobody I spoke to in the play world remembered any water.
But people’s memories were different. I kept on hearing stories about these splash pools. They seemed to have an important place in play folklore around the area.
A trawl of the historical archives of Tower Hamlets brought out several interesting photos including a splash pool in Shandy Park in the sixties, rectangular and frothing with children.
And this one from 1936. It is paradise! Vast stretches of water with tree islands. A design that, sadly, many people would consider too daring for us to try now.
I started asking people about playing in water and the stories flooded in. Bathing in the lake in Victoria Park; little lidos in the small public parks all over the borough and a large one in Millwall Park; municipal playgrounds, built in the early part of the nineteenth century, designed for children to dip in and out of the water.
The memories I heard were so vivid and still important all these years later. Sadly, there is little chance of that being part of the play memory store of our children now.

Just down in the stream from the splash pool was a nice set of small cascades, which of course made for a great setup on this shot. I'm going to have to hit up this place once the green sets in.
