HUMPHREYS GARRISON – More than 40 individuals, including at least two previous winners of events here, plus a husband and wife championship team, participated in the Humphreys Triathlon Sept. 18.

 

For the first time, the triathlon began with the swim portion being held in the Splish and Splash pool. The course for individuals was a 400 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and five kilometer run, while three teams had to swim 800 meters, bike 30 kilometers and finish with a 10 kilometer run.

 

The overall winner, finishing in 58 minutes, 22 seconds, was Brad Williams, an Air Force staff sergeant assigned to Osan Airbase, who began competing in triathlons while stationed there earlier in his career. He won events here in November 2008 and March 2009 and said that “starting the race at the Splish and Splash was a great improvement” over his previous times.

 

A husband and wife team, one of two competing in the event, captured the Women’s 32 and under and Men’s 33 and over titles handily.

 

Sarah Stahl completed the course in 1:14:08 to post the Women’s best overall finish, more than five minutes faster than her closest rival and husband Nathan Stahl, a master sergeant assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, posted the second best Men’s time of the day, finishing at 1:04:46.

 

Gabriel Harley, a chief petty officer assigned to Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae and winner of the Humphreys Triathlon in March, finished second to Stahl in the Men’s 33 and over with a time of 1:07:02.

Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin (northwestern Wyoming, USA).

 

Big Anemone Geyser is a frequently erupting small geyser in the southern Geyser Hill Group. It is immediately adjacent to Little Anemone Geyser - together they make up “Anemone Geyser”. Big Anemone has a nearly circular basin with a central vent and lacks a well-defined border. Encircling the cream-colored to grayish, smooth geyserite-floored vent area is abundant, well-formed, closely spaced nodules of grayish geyserite (columnar geyserite & pseudocolumnar geyserite), similar in appearance to cave popcorn (coralloids). Some small biscuit-like masses of grayish geyserite are present on the northern side of the geyser, often with apical puckered structures. The geyserite biscuits are in and along a small, irregularly-shaped, eruption splash pool. The diameter of Big Anemone Geyser, as measured across its nodulose geyserite area, is about 2.5 meters. The diameter of the feature, as measured from the outer edge of its colorful, encircling microbial mats, is about 4.5 to 5 meters.

 

Big Anemone’s geyserite is especially well-formed and attractive. Geyserite is a friable to solid chemical sedimentary rock composed of opal (hydrous silica, a.k.a. opaline silica: SiO2•nH2O), It forms by precipitation of hydrous silica from hot spring water. Geyserite is the dominant material at & around Yellowstone hot springs and geysers (the Mammoth Hot Springs area is a major exception to this). The silica in the geyserite is ultimately derived from leaching of subsurface, late Cenozoic-aged rhyolitic rocks by superheated groundwater. Rhyolite is an abundant rock at Yellowstone.

 

Big Anemone Geyser has frequent, moderately low to medium-sized, splashing eruptions. Eruption durations are about half a minute long. Intervals between eruptions starts range from about 7 minutes to almost half-an-hour. Eruption activity at adjacent Little Anemone Geyser has a delaying affect on Big Anemone’s eruption frequency. Eruption cessations at Big Anemone Geyser are impressive, rapid pool drains. Most of the erupted water ends up back in its own vent. Some eruption splash water enters Little Anemone’s basin or its runoff channel.

HUMPHREYS GARRISON – More than 40 individuals, including at least two previous winners of events here, plus a husband and wife championship team, participated in the Humphreys Triathlon Sept. 18.

 

For the first time, the triathlon began with the swim portion being held in the Splish and Splash pool. The course for individuals was a 400 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and five kilometer run, while three teams had to swim 800 meters, bike 30 kilometers and finish with a 10 kilometer run.

 

The overall winner, finishing in 58 minutes, 22 seconds, was Brad Williams, an Air Force staff sergeant assigned to Osan Airbase, who began competing in triathlons while stationed there earlier in his career. He won events here in November 2008 and March 2009 and said that “starting the race at the Splish and Splash was a great improvement” over his previous times.

 

A husband and wife team, one of two competing in the event, captured the Women’s 32 and under and Men’s 33 and over titles handily.

 

Sarah Stahl completed the course in 1:14:08 to post the Women’s best overall finish, more than five minutes faster than her closest rival and husband Nathan Stahl, a master sergeant assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, posted the second best Men’s time of the day, finishing at 1:04:46.

 

Gabriel Harley, a chief petty officer assigned to Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae and winner of the Humphreys Triathlon in March, finished second to Stahl in the Men’s 33 and over with a time of 1:07:02.

HUMPHREYS GARRISON – More than 40 individuals, including at least two previous winners of events here, plus a husband and wife championship team, participated in the Humphreys Triathlon Sept. 18.

 

For the first time, the triathlon began with the swim portion being held in the Splish and Splash pool. The course for individuals was a 400 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and five kilometer run, while three teams had to swim 800 meters, bike 30 kilometers and finish with a 10 kilometer run.

 

The overall winner, finishing in 58 minutes, 22 seconds, was Brad Williams, an Air Force staff sergeant assigned to Osan Airbase, who began competing in triathlons while stationed there earlier in his career. He won events here in November 2008 and March 2009 and said that “starting the race at the Splish and Splash was a great improvement” over his previous times.

 

A husband and wife team, one of two competing in the event, captured the Women’s 32 and under and Men’s 33 and over titles handily.

 

Sarah Stahl completed the course in 1:14:08 to post the Women’s best overall finish, more than five minutes faster than her closest rival and husband Nathan Stahl, a master sergeant assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, posted the second best Men’s time of the day, finishing at 1:04:46.

 

Gabriel Harley, a chief petty officer assigned to Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae and winner of the Humphreys Triathlon in March, finished second to Stahl in the Men’s 33 and over with a time of 1:07:02.

Good afternoon Ladies and Gentlemen,

 

Unlike the other marvellous people on the stage this afternoon, I don’t sing or dance, or tell jokes or even do magic. I’m an accountant!

 

However a couple of days ago I was in the library, where I found, tucked away on the bottom shelf, a book written by a former P&O captain.

 

This turned out to be a biography about Shakespeare, and there was chapter that immediately caught my eye, entitled “Shakespeare’s first cruise”.

 

I read this with interest and how it explained that much of Shakespeare’s writings were edited or re-written following on from this Mediterranean cruise.

 

Thus for those who haven’t read this book, I thought now would be a good opportunity to give a brief summary of some of the main points.

 

Therefore what follows are a few of the well known quotes, as originally written for many of Shakespeare’s main characters.

  

As an example for Anthony and Cleopatra Shakespeare wrote:

 

I will to Egypt

And though I make this marriage for my peace

In the East my pleasures lie

 

In fact, immediately on boarding his cruise, Shakespeare originally wrote:

 

I will to Portugal, Spain, France and Itali

And though I make this trip for my peace

In the Yacht and Compass my pleasures lie

  

It appears that Shakespeare was very careful in choosing his particular cruise, doing his research about where he wanted to go. Scandinavia was clearly not desirable in those days, as reflected in Hamlet where he writes about there being:

 

Something rotten in the state of Denmark

 

However it is questionable whether Shakespeare enjoyed himself all the time. On his return, when asked to comment on the other passengers seated at his table for Club dining, he described them, as also later reflected in Hamlet, as

  

O villain, villain, smiling dammed villain!

My tables meet it is I set it down

That one may smile, and smile, and be a villain

   

Following on from the subject of table companions, the main theme in much of

Shakespeare’s cruise related writings is that of food.

 

Thus again from Hamlet what we now know as:

 

To be or not to be - that is the question

Whether tis nobler in the mind to suffer

The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune

Or to take arms against the sea of troubles

And by opposing end them - To die to sleep.

 

Was in fact Shakespeare’s second attempt at this famous quote, the first being:

 

To eat or not to eat - that is the question

Whether tis nobler in the stomach to suffer

The cream cakes and sweets of outrageous afternoon tea

Or to take the Horizon Grill and risk the swelling sea.

  

Indeed the aspect of afternoon tea crops up again in Hamlet with the line:

 

The lady doth protest too much, me thinks.

 

Which of course relates to the Queen complaining about her waist after the chocoholics special afternoon tea.

  

Neither is the theme of food simply kept to Hamlet. Shakespeare also refers to this in Henry V where we have the following:

 

T(he)y hath eaten me out of house and home.

 

Which of course is the famous quote from the head chef complaining to the Captain that the passengers have eaten far too much since leaving Southampton.

  

Aside from food, the other main topic of conversation Shakespeare had on his cruise was the weather. This is seen when he writes for Macbeth:

  

Fair is foul and foul is fair

Sail through the fog and filthy air

 

And indeed similarly taken from the same play, the lines

 

When shall we three meet again

In thunder, lightning or in rain

 

Is in fact a misquote from a conversation Shakespeare overheard a fellow passenger saying:

 

When shall we three play quoits again

In thunder, lightning or in rain,

Deck 7 perchance tis mostly covered

or shall we await sunny Spain?

  

However even in Macbeth, it wasn’t long before Shakespeare returned to food. Thus whilst we all know the quote:

Though I have a table not, and so many people I see still.

 

Shakespeare even attended the formal Gala dinner evening for he sets out the menu in Macbeth as being:

 

Eye of newt, and toe of frog

Wool of bat, and tongue of dog

Adder’s fork and blind-worms sting

Lizards leg, and howlet’s wing

 

Of course even in Shakespeare’s day the Norovirus was very much an issue. Hence this why he refers to the cleanliness regime, in Macbeth, with that famous pre-dinner alcohol gel washing scene of:

 

Out, dammed spot! Out I say.

As with Macbeth above, other Shakespeare’s writings were taken from overheard passenger conversations. Thus the famous Romeo and Juliet quote should read:

 

O Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo

 

Deck 14: You need to take the port aft lifts,

by Starlights, turn left at the Penants Bar,

past the splash pool and that’s where you’ll find me.

  

And the following is an overheard conversation between Reception and a passenger, recreated in The Merchant of Venice, but again Shakespeare chooses to omit the last couple of lines originally spoken:

And sir that is why on board we use no money,

Just your cruise card, you see.

 

Even Shakespeare realised the importance of the cruise card. Pity poor Richard III, who losses his whilst on a Shore Excursion, and thus pleads with the other passengers:

 

A cruise card! A cruise card! My Kingdom for a cruise card.

  

And finally Shakespeare summarises his whole cruising experience in his famous quote from As You Like It. Whilst the final version is:

 

All the world’s a stage

And all the men and women merely players;

They have their exits and their entrances

And one man in his time plays many parts,

His acts being seven ages.

 

What he originally wrote was:

 

All the world’s a cruise

And all the men and women merely passengers;

They all have their ports of call

And one man in his time visits many places

HUMPHREYS GARRISON – More than 40 individuals, including at least two previous winners of events here, plus a husband and wife championship team, participated in the Humphreys Triathlon Sept. 18.

 

For the first time, the triathlon began with the swim portion being held in the Splish and Splash pool. The course for individuals was a 400 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and five kilometer run, while three teams had to swim 800 meters, bike 30 kilometers and finish with a 10 kilometer run.

 

The overall winner, finishing in 58 minutes, 22 seconds, was Brad Williams, an Air Force staff sergeant assigned to Osan Airbase, who began competing in triathlons while stationed there earlier in his career. He won events here in November 2008 and March 2009 and said that “starting the race at the Splish and Splash was a great improvement” over his previous times.

 

A husband and wife team, one of two competing in the event, captured the Women’s 32 and under and Men’s 33 and over titles handily.

 

Sarah Stahl completed the course in 1:14:08 to post the Women’s best overall finish, more than five minutes faster than her closest rival and husband Nathan Stahl, a master sergeant assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, posted the second best Men’s time of the day, finishing at 1:04:46.

 

Gabriel Harley, a chief petty officer assigned to Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae and winner of the Humphreys Triathlon in March, finished second to Stahl in the Men’s 33 and over with a time of 1:07:02.
