HUMPHREYS GARRISON – More than 40 individuals, including at least two previous winners of events here, plus a husband and wife championship team, participated in the Humphreys Triathlon Sept. 18.

For the first time, the triathlon began with the swim portion being held in the Splish and Splash pool. The course for individuals was a 400 meter swim, 20 kilometer bike and five kilometer run, while three teams had to swim 800 meters, bike 30 kilometers and finish with a 10 kilometer run.

The overall winner, finishing in 58 minutes, 22 seconds, was Brad Williams, an Air Force staff sergeant assigned to Osan Airbase, who began competing in triathlons while stationed there earlier in his career. He won events here in November 2008 and March 2009 and said that “starting the race at the Splish and Splash was a great improvement” over his previous times.

A husband and wife team, one of two competing in the event, captured the Women’s 32 and under and Men’s 33 and over titles handily.

Sarah Stahl completed the course in 1:14:08 to post the Women’s best overall finish, more than five minutes faster than her closest rival and husband Nathan Stahl, a master sergeant assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 602nd Aviation Support Battalion, posted the second best Men’s time of the day, finishing at 1:04:46.

Gabriel Harley, a chief petty officer assigned to Commander Fleet Activities Chinhae and winner of the Humphreys Triathlon in March, finished second to Stahl in the Men’s 33 and over with a time of 1:07:02.

Geysers are hot springs that episodically erupt columns of water. They occur in few places on Earth. The highest concentration of geysers anywhere is in Yellowstone’s Upper Geyser Basin (northwestern Wyoming, USA).

Big Anemone Geyser is a frequently erupting small geyser in the southern Geyser Hill Group. It is immediately adjacent to Little Anemone Geyser - together they make up “Anemone Geyser”. Big Anemone has a nearly circular basin with a central vent and lacks a well-defined border. Encircling the cream-colored to grayish, smooth geyserite-floored vent area is abundant, well-formed, closely spaced nodules of grayish geyserite (columnar geyserite & pseudocolumnar geyserite), similar in appearance to cave popcorn (coralloids). Some small biscuit-like masses of grayish geyserite are present on the northern side of the geyser, often with apical puckered structures. The geyserite biscuits are in and along a small, irregularly-shaped, eruption splash pool. The diameter of Big Anemone Geyser, as measured across its nodulose geyserite area, is about 2.5 meters. The diameter of the feature, as measured from the outer edge of its colorful, encircling microbial mats, is about 4.5 to 5 meters.

Big Anemone’s geyserite is especially well-formed and attractive. Geyserite is a friable to solid chemical sedimentary rock composed of opal (hydrous silica, a.k.a. opaline silica: SiO2•nH2O), It forms by precipitation of hydrous silica from hot spring water. Geyserite is the dominant material at & around Yellowstone hot springs and geysers (the Mammoth Hot Springs area is a major exception to this). The silica in the geyserite is ultimately derived from leaching of subsurface, late Cenozoic-aged rhyolitic rocks by superheated groundwater. Rhyolite is an abundant rock at Yellowstone.

Big Anemone Geyser has frequent, moderately low to medium-sized, splashing eruptions. Eruption durations are about half a minute long. Intervals between eruptions starts range from about 7 minutes to almost half-an-hour. Eruption activity at adjacent Little Anemone Geyser has a delaying affect on Big Anemone’s eruption frequency. Eruption cessations at Big Anemone Geyser are impressive, rapid pool drains. Most of the erupted water ends up back in its own vent. Some eruption splash water enters Little Anemone’s basin or its runoff channel.

CAMP RED CLOUD – The stem-to-stern, $2.6 million overhaul of the 50-year-old Hanson fitness complex at Camp Casey is nearing completion, officials said this week.

The complex is considered one of Area I’s most important athletics and recreation facilities, and consists of the Hanson Field House, and Area I’s only outdoor swimming pool. Also on the site is a children’s “splish-and-splash” pool.

Hanson also serves as the gym for Area I’s only Department of Defense school, the nearby Casey Elementary School, which has no gym on its own campus.

And Hanson houses some Child and Youth Services activities, has been the venue for a variety of sporting and entertainment events, and has been used in military training, including noncombatant evacuation drills.

An extensive renovation of one-story Hanson Field House, sometimes known informally as Hanson Gym, is scheduled to wrap up later this month, said Dewey McLean, project manager with the U.S. Army Garrison Red Cloud’s Directorate of Public Works.

Already completed are two other major parts of the overall Hanson complex project – renovation of gym’s basketball court and the outdoor pool. Work on the basketball court began in July 2010 and finished in October 2011; work on the pool began in August 2010 and finished in April 2011.

The remaining work has been a thoroughgoing makeover of the field house overall.

The building’s layout has been redesigned to make it easier for patrons to get more directly from one part of the gym to other parts, McLean said.

“This makeover is going to create this connectivity, if you will, and make the gym as one unit, accessible to all,” said McLean.

And virtually everything will be brand new, he said.

The changes include new walls, floors, ceilings, a new canopy in the main entryway, a new power system, phone system, new ventilation, heating and air conditioning systems, new wiring, lighting, plumbing, a new fire alarm system.

Locker rooms, showers and rest rooms are being overhauled, with new fixtures, tiles, new benches and lockers, and new toilets and toilet stall partitions.

“All the toiletries, all the fixtures, the floors – going to be brand new,” McLean said. “So when they go in it won’t look like anything that they’ve seen before.”

In addition, the Casey Elementary students now have their own locker room as a result of the renovation, said Randy Behr, USAG Red Cloud’s director of sports, fitness and aquatics.

Also, outdoor pathways from the gym to the pool will have new roof structures, said McLean.

And administrative offices are also being renovated.

The outdoor pool will now have an outdoor changing facility, Behr said.

That’ll mean swimmers will no longer have to change clothes inside the Hanson building; they’ll now be able to do so poolside.

Most folks are planning their gardens, etc. for spring..I'm trying to find ideas for vacation time!

Made this for the g'kids to high-light some of the "magic" moments.

With the wonderful weather we had this week, Lucy and Cian got a splash pool for the garden. Obviously, it's because they can go into the 25m heated pool we have in our garden already haha!

Well the little one absolutely loved splashing in it, without one cry for being cold. Now, long may the good weather continue!
