Having seen the spectacular old Methodist Church (Uniting) in Ross, built in 1885, I thought I would try to give it a more dramatic look. As you know we have already seen how this church from one angle looks very similar to the famous Church at Auvers painted by Vincent van Gogh.

That sky was quite dramatic all afternoon, so making it a feature of this shot was very important. I've called the picture "The Spire" and had in mind William Golding's novel of the same name (1964). It can be described as "a dark and powerful portrait of one man's will", and deals with the construction of the 404-foot high spire loosely based on the famous Salisbury Cathedral.

Elle est protégée en région Basse-Normandie et Alsace Lorraine. C'est une plante vivace qui apprécie les prés et les bois et pousse surtout dans les sols acides ou calcaires.

I took this from the old bridge. The lamps compliment the spires.

South spire of the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, California taken after dark on a night with the fog hovering at the top of the spires.

View of Cathedral Spires and Black Elk Wilderness from the Needles Highway. The Needles are part of the Black Hills region of south-western South Dakota. Needles are granite pillars, very sharp and dramatic, scattered at the top of the ridge. They are accessible by a two-lane road that merits the name of a highway only because it is, well, rather high. It is fun to drive and the scenery is impressive, especially in Autumn.

Note the map on the right. Unorganized Territory - yes, that sounds quite accurate. :-)

The Spire on O'Connell Street Dublin is 120 Metres tall and was erected to celebrate the new millenium.

The main body was built in the early 13th century and apparently has the tallest church spire in the UK which was adding in the 14th (I think).

Two spires composed of Mancos Shale eroded out of the cliffs around them. They are located about 10 miles from Hanksville, Utah. They have been seriously damaged by climbers. It is a controversial climb given the fragility of the taller tower. BLM has attempted to keep people from climbing it. The spire has lost some height since we visited a couple years ago. The thrill of balancing atop the slender tower draws climbers regardless of the risk to themselves and the spire. It is located in a beautiful area of fantastical erosion.

Built collectively across the 13th to 18th centuries, together they represent three of the four major churches in the city, as seen from Zürich University.
