Having seen the spectacular old Methodist Church (Uniting) in Ross, built in 1885, I thought I would try to give it a more dramatic look. As you know we have already seen how this church from one angle looks very similar to the famous Church at Auvers painted by Vincent van Gogh.

That sky was quite dramatic all afternoon, so making it a feature of this shot was very important. I've called the picture "The Spire" and had in mind William Golding's novel of the same name (1964). It can be described as "a dark and powerful portrait of one man's will", and deals with the construction of the 404-foot high spire loosely based on the famous Salisbury Cathedral.

View of Cathedral Spires and Black Elk Wilderness from the Needles Highway. The Needles are part of the Black Hills region of south-western South Dakota. Needles are granite pillars, very sharp and dramatic, scattered at the top of the ridge. They are accessible by a two-lane road that merits the name of a highway only because it is, well, rather high. It is fun to drive and the scenery is impressive, especially in Autumn.

Note the map on the right. Unorganized Territory - yes, that sounds quite accurate. :-)

There are many entrance points to Badlands National Park. One of my favorites is from the north via Big Foote Road. I like it because there are opportunities to see birds and other wildlife as well as rural landscape. Buffalo Gap Grasslands is on both sides of this road as you near the Park.

This view is at the junction of Big Foote Road with the Badlands Loop.

This had to be one of the most otherworldly places that my camera and I have ever visited. Rolling claps of thunder filled this canyon as the summer storm was clearing. Happy to report that lightning strikes kept their distance from us on this warm rainy desert afternoon.

Salisbury Cathedral

The main body was built in the early 13th century and apparently has the tallest church spire in the UK which was adding in the 14th (I think).

The spires of Predigerkirche, Fraumünster and St. Peterskirche, over Zürich, Switzerland.

Built collectively across the 13th to 18th centuries, together they represent three of the four major churches in the city, as seen from Zürich University.
