I custom requested a Japanese theme spindle through Dragoncraft www.dragoncraft.etsy.com because I really like Japanese culture and even want to live there
Spindle assembly. I did not remove the bottom bearing. It was firmly in place and I did not want to press it off. The bearings look to be in good shape.
Dave's signature leaf motif has been burn etched around the edges of the notched hard maple whorl of this beautiful drop spindle. The top of the whorl has been adorned with his rose and leaf motif. The overall length of this spindle is 9 inches, and it weights 1.3 ounces. A brass hook has been added to the purpleheart shaft.
After spinning yarn on a spinning wheel for close to 10 years now, I have never spun on a drop spindle. So I decided to pick one up at the LYS today and got some pink roving to give it a whirl. I'm hooked! Why didn't I spin on a drop spindle before? I'm waiting for my new kick wheel to arrive next week. Eeep!
Hedgerow Harvest
Beautiful pink and orange seed of the spindle. This was growing in a hedgerow by the M11 motorway. The people whizzing by had no idea of the parallel world beside them.
Maple spindle gall is the trees reaction to the mite insect (Vasates aceriscrumena). Spindles are a bit over 1/4" in length. The spindles begin green and turn red or tan as they age. Despite their dramatic appearance this is mostly a cosmetic issue and not a threat to tree health.
I like to think of the spindle in quadrants--corners between the cross arms. You can see them numbered in the photo. I tend to wind on clockwise when I'm spinning singles (Z twist) and counterclockwise when I'm plying (S twist).
Always start winding on from the bottom.
Step 1: Bring the yarn up in Corner #1
You can leave a tail hanging on the bottom (the start of the centerpull ball), but I find that it gets in the way when I really get my rhythm going, so I leave the end wrapped around the center, and when I take out the spindle pieces, I stick a finger in one of the side holes (where a cross bar used to be) and dig around until I can pull out the end. On really lucky days the hook on the shaft snags the very beginning of the yarn on its way through and retrieves it for me!
The fruit and seed of the Spindle bush. The fruit is a pink-red four- or five-valved pod-like berry, which splits open to reveal the fleshy-coated orange seeds. Note from seller: "About your questions on these spindles (First of all sorry for my slow reply), I've noticed are still used in Peru mainly by shepherdess in Andean mountains.
I've seen several spindles and whorls of coastal Peru. In the north coast are usually found with copper whorls or large, unpolished usually conical pottery whorls with strong incise decoration. At central coast are found many times within weaver's baskets, with painted spindles, usually globular, small whorls if compared with north coast whorls. I've seen only Nazca spindles and whorls, (never a Paracas or Huari) whorls are made usually of pottery, flat with incise decoration of animals and the spindle is an entire piece of thorn.
I am almost sure that the first spindle comes from Huacho valley (with cane whorl) and other three from Chancay valley (both on Central coastal area). Rarely appears cane whorls in the Chancay valley. However, similar Chancay valley spindles and whorls appears in Huacho valley more frequently."
The shafts on these spindles, which range from 10.25" t0 14", are each a single thorn; the whorls are secured by a bit of fiber.

My drop spindle arrived in the mail, just as lovely as I'd hoped. The whorl is inlaid maple, cherry, and walnut; the shaft is also walnut. The yarn in the background is bargain skeins ($3 each!) of a llama/wool blend from the Knitting Connection here in Syracuse. Nice little LYS, but it has absolutely nothing on Michigan's yarn stores.
Apparently you have to grow your own sheep in order to get wool around here. Fortunately, Etsy.com has come to my rescue and the mighty highway trucks are already bringing hand-dyed roving in vermilion and orange to me from Ishpeming, Michigan. Knitting and spinning supplies were something I took completely for granted, as there were plenty of sources in the A2 area. Not so much in Syracuse. Sigh.

Light weight spindle and a Niddy 'pinne. The handle of this Niddy Noddy can be used to make centre pull balls of wool - f.i. make a single yarn into a centre pull ball and directly ply the yarn back onto the spindle - after which the plied yarn can be wound into a ready-to-knit ball of yarn.

This spindle took a little bit of getting used to. I must say that fiber prep is key when spinning on this type of supported spindle. I hand carded the fiber and made it into rolags. It wasn't until my last rolag that I started spinning and drafting. Before that, I was parking and drafting! LOL!
