A walk to get the paper and have a bit of exercise, on a very dull and damp day, but enlivened by going through Hill Hook Nature Reserve. I could do with retaking some of these when there is a bit more light to allow shorter shutter speeds and better depth of field.
Seeing the spindle took me back 70 years or so, to Blacklands Copse on the Isle of Wight, which was a regular walk as a small child, and my mother taught me about spindle trees. They were never like this though, and these seem to be garden centre varieties, not the true wild spindle.

After spinning yarn on a spinning wheel for close to 10 years now, I have never spun on a drop spindle. So I decided to pick one up at the LYS today and got some pink roving to give it a whirl. I'm hooked! Why didn't I spin on a drop spindle before? I'm waiting for my new kick wheel to arrive next week. Eeep!
Thanks to Pete's (Chickpeasrule) lovely image yesterday, I can now confidently say that this is Spindle (I had no idea, of course!). It's a deciduous tree native to the UK and Europe and I saw this one in the National Trust gardens at Sheffield Park.

Along with my husband's spindle that he made, here are the spindles that my seven year old son and ten year old daughter made for me. Talk about a special gift!

Shop-made project cold rolled steel and a cast aluminum handwheel locks into the spindle by carefully tightening the nut at the center of the handwheel.
I got the idea for this sort of locking joint when I recalled how my old bike handlebar stem was secured in the forks tube.
This native shrub prefers rich soils and is most common in ancient woods and hedges and chalk scrub. We saw lots on our trip to the Cotswolds!
Spindle gets it's name from one of the uses of the twigs- as the spindles used to spin raw wool (the wool is wrapped around the twig) . This is because the twigs are straight and smooth yet heavy. The twigs were also used for skewers, toothpicks, pegs and knitting needles (hence some of its other names). In the past the berries were used as a laxative or baked and powdered and used as a treatment for headlice
That's the spindle that got everything else started. It's the first spindle I've ever purchased and it came with a little bag of pastel colored wool.
It's probably made out of beech wood and weighs about 50 grams.
