Turkish Drop Spindle Tutorial 1
I like to think of the spindle in quadrants--corners between the cross arms. You can see them numbered in the photo. I tend to wind on clockwise when I'm spinning singles (Z twist) and counterclockwise when I'm plying (S twist).
Always start winding on from the bottom.
Step 1: Bring the yarn up in Corner #1
You can leave a tail hanging on the bottom (the start of the centerpull ball), but I find that it gets in the way when I really get my rhythm going, so I leave the end wrapped around the center, and when I take out the spindle pieces, I stick a finger in one of the side holes (where a cross bar used to be) and dig around until I can pull out the end. On really lucky days the hook on the shaft snags the very beginning of the yarn on its way through and retrieves it for me!
