The Feb challenge was "New Beginnings"... I saw people talk about spring colours and earth colours, but other people focused on technique or personal beginnings.
Navajo spindle - 80 cm long
wood: ancient oak from bordeaux wine vessel
Best spun in a little bowl - makes nice and very fine yarns - also bigger diameter yarns and suitable for plying too.

My new Bosworth spindle (Jatoba wood whorl), and the Party Favor roving pack I got. I went back on Sunday to check out the booth; it came from Puckerbrush Farms. The spindle came from Ellen's Half Pint Farm's booth because I wasn't smart enough to find Johnathan and Sheila Bosworth at Journey Wheel until, like, Sunday. I'm kind of stupid around yarn fumes. ;) The people at Ellen's are so nice, though, that it doesn't really matter.
Woodturning tuition - morning practice was beads and coves using a spindle gouge and skew for the beads and a spindle gouge for the coves.
Wow - took me forever to get my cell phone to give up this video... Two front portions of bike frames, one with a pulley and knitting needle (actually a Tunisian Crochet hook) stuck through and secured to the pulley, and the other with a front wheel. There is a piece of yarn as a belt drive around the wheel and the pulley - spin the wheel - TaDa - spinning wheel. It's worth mentioning that the pulley section is a smaller bike, for about an eight year old size, and the wheel section is a mountain bike style that would be just a bit too small for me. I'm 5' 9" (and 1/4!) The smaller pulley section frame happens to fit INSIDE the wheel section frame, so when my drive band stretches, I can just slice OUT the pulley section frame a little... I want to try a fan belt as a drive band.
I keep spinning faster and faster on it - but I'm estimating it's about three times as fast to spin than my drop spindle - which I still LOVE - but sometimes you just need mileage :-)
Orange batt, red moorit roving and carbonized bamboo, each spun as singles on a Ledbetter spindle, then plied together.
Spindler Hall was built in 1940 and dedicated to Lavina Spindler, a WMU faculty member from 1906 to 1939. Throughout this period she served as Director of the Campus School, Dean of Women, and Freshman Advisor. Originally a women's dormitory, the building is now used to house doctoral, graduate, senior, and non-traditional students.

A Colt employee demonstrates the use of a single spindle drill, marked "175" on its side. The drill was most likely used to drill holes in the frame of a revolver. The young man pictured is wearing a unique square folded hat that appears to be made of paper.

This spindle was shown by one of the participants. I would loved to have one like this. It is gorgeous
