This is a rather poor picture of this thing, which was quite simply amazing. It's called the Serpent Mother (by the Flaming Lotus Girls), and was an interactive 160-foot long snake skeleton, where burners could control the huge dragon-like head and make the vertebraes shoot flames. Quite the sight, and I'm pissed I didn't get a better picture of it at night. (Daytime shots to come soon).

The beef soup at Pho Bo Ga Mekong is still one of the best in Melbourne. It's a pity the shop is a tad grimy with sticky floors and tables.
I ordered a Special Beef Pho with various bits of offal. Pho Bo Ga Mekong is the only place I know that includes "bone marrow", which is actually the spinal cord of the cow. You can just see the butterfly-shaped grey matter in cross-section. Smooth, and creamy, just like brains, or scrambled eggs!
mmm... Mad Cow / BSE / vCJD anyone? :P
Today's tendon was overcooked, and too soft, to the extent that the sticky gelatinous texture had been washed out.

Back pain is pain felt in the back. Episodes of back pain may be acute, sub-acute, or chronic depending on the duration. The pain may be characterized as a dull ache, shooting or piercing pain, or a burning sensation. The pain may radiate into the arms and hands as well as the legs or feet, and may include paresthesia (tingling with no apparent cause), weakness or numbness in the legs and arms. The anatomic classification of back pain follows the segments of the spine: neck pain (cervical), middle back pain (thoracic), lower back pain (lumbar) or coccydynia (tailbone or sacral pain) with the lumbar vertebrae area most common for pain.
The pain may originate from the muscles, nerves, bones, joints or other structures in the vertebral column (spine). Internal structures such as the gallbladder and pancreas may also cause referred pain in the back.
Back pain is common with about nine out of ten adults experiencing it at some point in their life, and five out of ten working adults having it every year. However, it is rare for it to be permanently disabling, and in most cases of herniated disks and stenosis, rest, injections or surgery have similar general pain resolution outcomes on average after one year. In the United States, acute low back pain is the fifth most common reason for physician visits and causes 40% of missed days off work. Additionally, it is the single leading cause of disability worldwide.

Last Saturday, it was with great honor that the North Charleston Fire Department named Max High a "Firefighter for the Day." Before turning one year old, Max was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a genetic disorder that affects the control of muscle movement. Now seven, Max is a cheerful boy with a terrific smile, but had the aspiration to spend the day being a firefighter.

LUMBAR ANATOMY – VERTEBRA
spinal column Lumbar Spine Anatomy Vertebra
The spine is made up of thirty-three small bones called vertebrae. The five vertebrae between the chest and the pelvis are called the lumbar vertebrae. Each vertebra has different parts, spinal column Lumbar.
The vertebral body, the two pedicles and the two lamina. There are also two transverse processes and one spinous process. Each vertebra has two superior articular processes and two inferior articular processes, spinal column Lumbar.
An inferior articular process from the vertebra above moves against the superior articular process of the vertebra below to form a facet joint. This is also known as a zygo-apophysial joint.
The adjacent vertebrae are connected by the intervertebral disc in front of the spinal canal, and the two facet joints behind, spinal column Lumbar.
This disc and the two facet joints help keep the two vertebrae correctly aligned, while allowing a controlled amount of movement. In this way, all the vertebra of your spine work together, supporting each other. The stability of the spine as a whole relies upon the health of the disc and the facet joints in each vertebral level.
In the centre of each vertebra is a large hole. As the vertebrae all link up together, these holes line up and form a bony tube, called the vertebral canal or the spinal canal, spinal column Lumbar. The spinal cord passes down the vertebral canal, and the spinal nerves leave through the intervertebral foramina to the rest of the body.

3D printed implants could one day help restore neural connections and lost motor function in patients with spinal cord injury. The implants, developed by engineers and neuroscientists at the University of California San Diego, are soft bridges that guide new nerve cells to grow across a tear or break in an injured spinal cord. The work has so far shown promise in rats with severe spinal cord injury.

Staff and residents of the JAHVH Spinal Cord Injury sections F and FV held a Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month event on Sept. 23, 2020. Entertainment was provided by Charge Nurse Eric Norman and refreshments were provided by Paralyzed Veterans of America. SCI sections F and FV are long term care units and Veterans on those units consider it home. With access to the units extremely limited due to COVID-19 precautions, the staff try to set up events such as these to help provide a more home-like atmosphere for the residents.
Major Phil Packer was injured on the 19th February 2008 in Iraq and suffered spinal cord damage. He is now in a wheelchair.
Phil has decided to raise £1million for Help for Heroes. He explains why,
"The reason why I am embarking on this quest is that I am inspired by fellow injured servicemen at Headley Court; so many who have injuries far worse than mine. I believe I have a responsibility to assist those who need support. I hope to achieve this by using the training and experience the Armed Forces have given me, combined with a new understanding of the emotional journey. I hope to succeed with a positive attitude and with sincerity, humility, understanding and compassion. Help for Heroes, Headley Court and the Army have been my lifeline; this is my way of giving something back.
"Through physical challenges, I intend to support Help for Heroes by raising £1million and whilst doing so, displaying a positive image of disability and provide information on events and sports to fellow injured servicemen in order to raise awareness of organisations, charities and people that help and assist the disabled".
I am privileged to have got to know Phil and to be joining him in an attempt to row to France! You can support Phil's Challenge by donating at [www.philpacker.com]
Thank you.

Now that the North South ‘spine’ of England’s freight network is broken while the Viaduct repairs at Culham are effected, diversions are in place via Swindon, Gloucester and Birmingham to the West, and the WCML/MML/ECML to the East. Daytime freight on the ECML is limited, but a longtime Didcot favourite, 6M26 Eastleigh to Mountsorrel has swelled the numbers, seen here from grandson’s window at Biggleswade.

This is baby Taylor. She is so precious. I was asked to do pictures of this beautiful litlte girl a few weeks ago.. please read the following story, written by her aunt, who loves her so much..
Taylor was born on July 25th, 2009...aside from being smaller than an average newborn there was no indication anything was wrong, she appeared to be healthy and perfect. The first few months of Taylor's life went by as normal, she continued to be smaller than average but there were no outward signs of what was to come. When Taylor was 4 months old her family began to notice that she wasn't developing normally, most noticeably that she couldn't support her head or sit up. Taylor's parents were referred to a pediatric specialist and then to the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children, where she ultimately spent 4 weeks. While in the hospital the diagnosis was determined to be Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1.
SMA is is a neuromuscular disease characterized by degeneration of motor neurons, resulting in progressive muscular atrophy (wasting away) and weakness. There are different types of the disease, Type 1 is the most severe, it presents in infancy and often leads to death before the age of one. Not many people have heard of SMA, but it is one of the leading cause of infant mortality in North America and affects 1 in 6,000 to 1 in 10,000 children born every year. One in 40 people are carriers of the disease (they don't have the symptoms, but could pass the disease to their children).
Research for SMA has made progress but is underfunded. Scientists believe finding a cure/treatment for SMA through gene therapy could could also work treating other diseases like Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis and cancer.
A cure or treatment will not come in time for Taylor...her time with her family will be short, but full of love and they will continue to cherish every minute they have with her. She has changed the life of everyone who has met her.
You can make a donation to the Canadian chapter of the Cure SMA organization here: www.curesma.ca/makeapledge.shtml
