The Spice Bazaar is also known as the Egyptian Bazaar (Turkish: Mısır Çarşısı) .

It was designed by the then chief architect of the Ottoman Empire, Mimar Kasım, who died the year before it opened (1660).

The bazaar is located next to the Yeni Mosque and the animal market; near the Galata Bridge.

Sacks of spices on a market in Istanbul, Turkey

Mom had some spice drops at her house. Couldn't resist photographing them!

This was #1 on Explore for July 16 2009 for a short while! ;-)

Are a ceramic spice jar set. There were ceramic houses for Nutmeg, Tarragon, Basil, Garlic, Paprika, Ginger and Cinnamon. They were on a shelf in someone's kitchen.

This area is the hub of the Kerala spice trade. Famous for tea, dried fruits, cashew nuts and rubber, it stretches from the Vypin Jetty along Calvathy Road and Bazaar Road to the Dutch Palace.

Since the formation of Cochin harbour following the floods of 1341 merchant ships have sailed to Kochi and dropped anchor at the mouth of the Calvathy river. The spices they sought were carried by boat from the inland waterways of Kerala and delivered to the docks at jetties which lined the harbour waterfront. The harbour became a hectic trading area where transactions were conducted and customs duties were levied. Eventually the Portuguese, Dutch and British came to this region one by one, laying the foundations for colonial rule.

There are numerous warehouses along this stretch of road, some are disused but many still function as spice ‘godowns’ or storage areas for antiques, food and other produce. The Kochi Biennale Foundation has secured over 100,000 sq feet of space for installation, projection and mixed media works. This would open a dialogue between “fine” art and urban decay as many of these structures are being reanimated from a severe state of disrepair.

Other day I was cooking potatoes for breakfast. After adding all the spices I realized I've used coriander in three different forms...seeds, ground and fresh coriander. The fun part was, in spite of using the same ingredient..all three forms tasted totally diverse :)

I've planned to post a spice per week until my lazy susan go wild, so folks please bare with me ;)

Thank you all for your sweet e-mails and concern...I appreciate it :))

Backyard pear tree----the small fruits are best for canning and spicing

Every time I taste spice drops, I remember my Grandma Wolf. She always had some of them stashed in her bread box. They were often dried up and stale, but she did not seem to mind, and neither did we kids.

Variety's the very spice of life, That gives it all its flavor.

Mounds of spices create a rainbow of color in Dubai's spice souk.

Dubai, UAE. 2018.

Dubai has a long history with Arabic caravans. Although most spices trading is done in supermarkets these days, there is still a strong nostalgic and intangible heritage related to Spice Souks across the Arabian Peninsula.

India Day 2 - Delhi

Carrying on with the cycling tour, we end up at the Spice Market in Delhi. Thank goodness for the masks as breathing was difficult with all the chilli in the air!!

This gives a better idea of the attraction of having a meal or drink in the Spice Island Inn, particularly if you're near a window (or two!)

(I had to use a little Photoshop otherwise the windows were too light/pub was too dark!)

Who has raided the spice cupboard then?
