The Greek sphinx was a fabulous creature with a woman's head set on a winged lion's body. Wings and chest bear traces of red and black paint, the same color as in the contemporary vase painting.
Sphinx - In ancient Greek mythology: a half-woman, half-lion who lived on a rock near Thebes and devoured travelers who could not solve the riddles she asked.
