The Sphinx Observatory is an astronomical observatory located above the Jungfraujoch in Switzerland. It is named after the Sphinx, a rocky summit on which it is located. At 3,571 m (11,716 ft) above mean sea level, it is one of the highest observatories in the world. Accessible to the public, it is also the second highest observation deck in Switzerland. The mountain top has been tunneled to fit an elevator which ascends to the observatory from the Jungfraujoch railway station, the highest such train station in Europe.

The open viewing deck accessible to the public is adjacent to the observatory. It offers views of the Jungfrau, Mönch, and Eiger peaks, all within a few kilometres.

It's never a bad thing to be able to photograph a sphinx close to home. None of that annoying sand in your camera gear and not a camel in sight. There is an actual Egyptian obelisk that sits beside the Thames in London. Named Cleopatra's Needle it dates back to 1450 BC (yes, BC!). It was a gift to the UK by the then ruler of Egypt, Mohammed Ali (no not THAT one) back in the early 1800s. It took them 60 years to move the obelisk from Alexandria to London (google it, it's quite a story how it got here!) and then when they finally did get it here they decided they needed two of these sphinxes to guard it, so a British sculptor was commissioned to create them. And a fine job he made of it, they are pretty cool to say the least. The only problem was that when they installed them, one on each side of the obelisk, they were supposed to be facing away from the obelisk, acting as guards. Instead they were installed facing the obelisk and now they look like a couple of cute puppy dogs cuddling up to their master.

I don't know why but I love stories like that... 😊

Almost felt a step back in time as I looked up at this sphinx statue perched atop the Legislature building with the clear bright blue sky and the moon subtly in the background... what a contrast in time!

It is a small beige-brown Sphingidae with a stocky body. The Moro-sphinx has a very long trunk for foraging flowers, often purple, blue or white, hovering in the manner of hummingbirds. It usually forages the flower nectar that other insects can not reach. He likes sage, lavender.

The five `sphinxes’ each contain fourteen apartments arranged so as to make the most of the location and the sun lighting. The blocks taper in plan towards the water, thereby maximizing unobstructed views of the lake both from the shore and from the sphinx apartments. As one moves up the building, each floor contains one less apartment. The result is a sphinx-like profile, with the sun-oriented roof terraces situated on the slanting `back’ of the mythical beast. The design of the penthouse apartments is different for each block, giving rise to a rhythm of distinctive heads, a striking skyline seen from the shore approach of the Stichtse bridge linking the new polders and the old mainland.

The sphinxes stand in a fringe of reeds that serves both as a gentle transition with the shore and a hydrophytic filter for water treatment. Concrete landing stages cut through the reeds to provide pedestrian access the sphinxes. Next to them lie the sunken entrances to the underwater garages that double as a foundation tanks. The façades are clad with silvercoloured metal sheets. The public space has been designed as an integral part of the scheme. At five points along its length, the esplanade turns into a look-out bastion, a surf beach, a village square, a wind balcony and a fishing jetty.

Le Sphinx au coucher de soleil

The Sphinx is the riddle, not the riddler.

Eumorpha achemon, the achemon sphinx moth, has a wingspan of 3.4 to 3.8 inches, and the caterpillars are also large, some exceeding three inches. Caterpillars have one of three color morphs: red, green or tan. Adults live only one to two weeks and may be flying in June, July or August, depending on site latitude, elevation and other factors. Although Achemons sphinxes are in the hornworm family, caterpillars in this species have a horn early, but drop it in the last molt, so the largest caterpillars lack the prominent "horn" for which the family is named. Over two dozen sphinx moth species occur in Colorado.

I flushed this moth from the rock garden while watering in the early morning. It flew a few feet, and settled on this Stella D'Oro lily, where it stayed most of the day.

Two neighbors have fences with grapes growing on them--grape leaves are consumed by growing achemon caterpillars.

Caterpillar of the Privet Hawk-moth

The caterpillar of this hawk moth is already an impressive size.

Unfortunately, this one was already doomed at the time of the photo and it was certain that it would not develop into a Hawk-moth.

The many small white dots on the caterpillar's back are the eggs of a tachinid fly that it has attached to. The larvae that hatch from them burrow into the caterpillar's body and eat it from the inside, sparing the vital organs and eating the caterpillar alive,

The Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and one of the most recognizable statues in the world.

I think the statue must have moved recently, I found him here, in Norway 😆

A religious rebel by the name of Mohamed Sa'm al-Dahr was maybe responsible for destroying the nose, he was later executed for vandalism.

Of course, the nose could have been simply damaged by weather and corrosion.

Some summer posts today. Next week the posts will include a lot of hard core 2023/24 winter content.

Visits from these moths to my garden were one of the highlights of the summer. My White-lined Sphinx Moth fandom goes all the way back to childhood.
