Another Sphinx in the Belvedere Garden

Whoa! What's this in the hallway tonight? Always good to see a sphinx moth, and it's been a little while for me. I was actually able to gently spread its wings a little to show the underwings without it flying off. I put it outside, we can't have some fool swat it...

The Great Sphinx of Giza, commonly referred to as the Sphinx, is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. The face of the Sphinx is generally believed to represent the Pharaoh Khafre.

Cut from the bedrock, the original shape of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of blocks. It measures 240 feet long from paw to tail, 66.31 feet high from the base to the top of the head, and 62 feet wide at its rear haunches.

It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre (c. 2558–2532 BC).

The Sphinx was carved out of bedrock sometime around 2500 BCE (but restoration uses blocks). It was built as the guard to Khafre's pyramid but later took on the role of a god and was worshipped (as noted by Pliny the Elder in his manuscript Natural History 77-79 CE). It is believed the face is that of Khafre.

Contrary to popular belief, the face was not targeted by Napoleon's artillery. It is believed the nose was removed by an extremist who believed removing the nose was how you defeated the pagan god.

The Sphinx Moth is also called the Hawk Moth and the Hummingbird Moth because of its hovering, swift flight patterns.

Great Sphinx at Giza recreation (1993), Luxor Casino, Las Vegas

The Great Sphinx is among the world’s largest sculptures.

It features a lion’s body and a human head adorned with a royal headdress. The statue was carved from a single piece of limestone, and pigment residue suggests that the entire Great Sphinx was painted.

Cut from the bedrock, the original shape of the Sphinx has been restored with layers of blocks. It measures 240 feet long from paw to tail, 66.31 feet high from the base to the top of the head, and 62 feet wide at its rear haunches.

According to some estimates, it would have taken about three years for 100 workers, using stone hammers and copper chisels, to finish the statue.

It is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre (c. 2558–2532 BC).

Can't imagine having this in my front yard and you can see the size of it compared to the little trailor sitting next to it. The whole yard is fenced with this cement wall complete with graphics and lions upon entering. Near the Illinois/Wisconsin border

"JOA were first approached by a senior QC and an Egyptologist to build a modern interpretation of an Egyptian House in 1994. After many attempts to find a suitable site on the Isis, they found a well situated riverside plot (with fine views across the river) containing an empty 1970's house of little architectural merit. Permission was obtained for its replacement in 1997, JOA's design receiving an enthusiastic response from the S.Oxfordshire Planning Committee. Construction started in spring 1998, with completion in Spring 1999."

"This unusual, Egyptian-style home was designed by architect John Outram.

Built to a high specification throughout, vaulted ceilings, coloured concrete window profiles and high quality joinery were used alongside specialised paint finishes to create an Egyptian style. The property also includes an infinity swimming pool, which is finished in black mosaic tiling.

Externally, self-coloured render was used on the walls to provide Egyptian motifs. The landscaping includes a water feature that leads down to the River Thames."

From Wikipedia:-

The Sphinx of Memphis is a stone sphinx located near the remains of Memphis, Egypt. The carving was believed to take place between 1700 and 1400 BC, which was during the 18th dynasty.[1] It is unknown which pharaoh is being honored and there are no inscriptions to supply information. The facial features imply that the Sphinx is honoring Hatshepsut or Amenhotep II or Amenhotep III.[
