The plaque describing Sphinx Head in Old Man's Cave at Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio.

The Sphinx was carved out of bedrock sometime around 2500 BCE (but restoration uses blocks). It was built as the guard to Khafre's pyramid but later took on the role of a god and was worshipped (as noted by Pliny the Elder in his manuscript Natural History 77-79 CE). It is believed the face is that of Khafre.

Contrary to popular belief, the face was not targeted by Napoleon's artillery. It is believed the nose was removed by an extremist who believed removing the nose was how you defeated the pagan god.

Sphinx Restaurant at Stepanakert, the capital of the de-facto Nagorno Karabakh Republic.

Nagorno-Karabakh is predominantly Armenian-populated, but was created as a 'Autonomous Oblast' within the Azerbaijan SSR in 1923. When the USSR collapsed, Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a bloody war over this region between 1988 to 1994, resulting in the defeat of the Azeris and Nagorno-Karabakh declaring itself independent.

No country has of yet recognised the independence of Nagorno-Karabakh, and relationship between Armenia and Azerbaijan remain tense. In April 2016 clashes erupted again and hundreds died - the situation was at its worst since the 1994 ceasefire.
