The Sphinx

Spring Grove Cemetery And Arboretum

Cincinnati, Ohio

Spending the day with my wonderful daughter we went and took some shots at the Historic Spring Grove Cemetery after some car tossing at the Club Blatz Junkyard Madness event this past Sunday. The light was perfect this day, normally I don't like direct sunlight for my shots.

On another note I am the featured photographer on the My Life At Arnold's blog for Photorgrapher Fridays! Click the link and check it out!

Considered anti-Christain at the time of it's instillation 1850, one of Spring Grove Cemetery's founders David Lawler decided to place this Sphinx on his family plot to commemorate the lives of his Mother and Father. It is one of the most interesting and beautiful monuments in the entire cemetery.

Perhaps not the most colourful moth , but for me the find of the day !!! Never seen before and they are very big . And two species mating made it very special !!!

My mother-in-law's Sphinx/Sphynx cat. Completely hairless, and completely creepy.

Also, see the version from 2007!

The Sphinx houses in Gooi en Vechtstreek, Netherlands reflected during an incredible sunset. We discovered later that the dark band in the sky is caused by a very large harbour fire that night in Amsterdam.

This moth spent the day on my balcony. I took it inside for a quick portrait shoot.

From Austria.

I was out in the garden when I saw this moth being chased by a hummingbird. Apparently the hummingbird viewed the moth as an interloper, so a chase ensued. Eventually, the moth sneaked back and resumed its pollinating activities. It was pretty funny to watch!

Thank you for taking the time to visit and comment!

Sphinx Moth, or Hawk Moth.

Some think this is a hummingbird because of the similar hovering, size and shape, but it is not a bird at all!

“But why think about that when all the golden lands ahead of you and all kinds of unforseen events wait lurking to surprise you and make you glad you're alive to see?”

The Great Sphinx of Giza, Arabic: أبو الهول, sited at the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile River and facing due east .

It is also from the same dynasty. Although the date of its construction is uncertain, the head of the Great Sphinx now is believed to be that of the pharaoh Khafra.

Macroglossum stellatarum (Moro-sphinx) / Lavandula xIntermedia (Lavandin)

The Sphinxes and stairs are originally part of the Crystal Palace from the Great Exhibition in 1851. The whole building was moved here from North London and rebuilt by Sir Joseph Paxton lasting here from 1854 till 1936 when it burned down. The Tower is a television mast and was famously featured in 24 minutes to Tulse Hill by Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine.
