"The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a human, and the body of a lion. Facing directly from west to east, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx appears to represent the pharaoh Khafre.

The original shape of the Sphinx was cut from the bedrock, and has since been restored with layers of limestone blocks. It measures 240 feet long from paw to tail, 266 feet high from the base to the top of the head and 162 feet wide at its rear haunches. Its nose was broken off for unknown reasons between the 3rd and 10th centuries AD.

The Sphinx is the oldest known monumental sculpture in Egypt and one of the most recognizable statues in the world. The archaeological evidence suggests that it was created by ancient Egyptians of the Old Kingdom during the reign of Khafre (2558–2532 BC)."

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a large half-human Sphinx statue in Egypt, on the Giza Plateau at the west bank of the Nile River, near modern-day Cairo. It is one of the largest single-stone statues on Earth, and is commonly believed to have been built by ancient Egyptians in the 3rd millennium BC.

Limestone statue of a seated female sphinx which may have been placed (along with 1604) at the entrance to the tomb of a Greek inhabitant of Egypt.

Period: New Kingdom

Dynasty:Dynasty 18

Reign:Joint reign of Hatshepsut and Thutmose III

Date:ca. 1479–1458 B.C.

Geography:From Egypt, Upper Egypt, Thebes, Deir el-Bahri, Senenmut Quarry

"This colossal sphinx portrays the female pharaoh Hatshepsut with the body of a lion and a human head wearing a nemes headcloth and royal beard. The sculptor has carefully observed the powerful muscles of the lion as contrasted to the handsome, idealized face of the pharaoh. It was one of at least six granite sphinxes that stood in Hatshepsut's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri. Smashed into many fragments at the order of Hatshepsut's nephew and successor Thutmose III and dumped in a quarry close by, this beast was recovered by the Museum's Egyptian Expedition and reassembled. It weighs more than seven tons."

Location: Potsdam, palace garden of Sanssouci

Sculptor: Georg Franz Ebenhecht (1710-1775)

The Great Sphinx is one of the world's largest and oldest statues, but basic facts about it are still subject to debate, such as when it was built, by whom and for what purpose.

Selim Hassan, writing in 1949 on recent excavations of the Sphinx enclosure, summed up the problem:

"Taking all things into consideration, it seems that we must give the credit of erecting this, the world's most wonderful statue, to Khafre, but always with this reservation: that there is not one single contemporary inscription which connects the Sphinx with Khafre; so, sound as it may appear, we must treat the evidence as circumstantial, until such time as a lucky turn of the spade of the excavator will reveal to the world a definite reference to the erection of the Sphinx."

Princess Maggie doing her best imitation of a sphinx. Maggie is strictly an indoor cat... this is one of the very few times that she ventured outdoors on the deck (She wouldn't want to get those pretty pink toes dirty :) but she wanted to let the squirrels, rabbits, chipmunks, and birds know just who was ruling the roost here. She was just a year old when this was taken back in 2002.

Thank you ginstercat and shantaya for your inspiration in the title!

I didn't know that this had even uploaded due to flickr's hiccups on Monday.

This nice sculpture made of sand remindes me a little bit to the Sphinx.
