Sphinx as seen through the bus window, Cairo Egypt

I have seen this pretty sphinx moth just a couple of times over many years of insect watching in Durham NC. I have recently been going back to some of my early digital images and giving them more careful processing. Happy Wing Wednesday!

First look at the Great Sphinx as seen from the bus.

A replica of the Great Sphinx of Giza welcomes tourists into the Luxor Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The Luxor is the largest Pyramid in the United States and was the tallest building in Las Vegas when they opened in 1993. Pilots as far away as Los Angeles (275 miles) can see the beam of light shooting into space from the top of the Luxor and is in a navigational landmark for air traffic.

The Great Sphinx of Giza is a limestone statue of a reclining sphinx, a mythical creature with the head of a human, and the body of a lion. Facing directly from west to east, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The face of the Sphinx appears to represent the pharaoh Khafre.

Seen in the Louvre

There are two sphinxes on the Thames Embankment, one either side of Cleopatra’s Needle. While the obelisk, erected in 1878, dates from around 1450BC, the sphinxes were created and added in 1882. They were designed by George Vulliamy and modelled by C. H. Mabey. According to the TourUK site, the bronze sphinxes were accidentally replaced facing the wrong way (that is, facing the obelisk) after being cleaned in the early years of the 20th century. Now I think about it, they do look a lot more recent than Ancient Egypt, and although the Ancient Egyptians used bronze, I don't think they made great use of it in sculptures.

the Great Sphinx of Giza is the largest structure created from a single piece of stone. It is also a figure synonymous with ancient Egyptian culture and remains shrouded in mystery.

With dimensions of 65 feet (20m) high, 260 feet (57m) long, and 20 feet (6m) wide

The Great Sphinx has the body of a lion and the face of a man (king?). The age of the sphinx is not known, with guesses varying between six-thousand and even thirteen-thousand years old. The commonly-held belief is that is was created during the 2700s BC,

On November 25, My partner and I went to special exhibition in The British Museum called "Journey through the afterlife ANCIENT EGYPTIAN - BOOK OF THE DEAD" which started from 4 of Nov till 6 March 2011. After the exhibition, he bought Bast bookends and this one for me. I thought of ANVReclife (Nicolas) so it will be decidated to him, only photo but Sphinx ducky is mine!

I always love Ancient Egypt since I was a child to now, absorbing their culture, Pharaohs and queens as well as gods and goddesses and fashions. I feel comfortable bringing it up and talk about them (Pharaohs, queens, gods and goddesses and their purposes, etc...) I guess it's one of my many past lives???

Sphinx presenting an offering.

The face of the sphinx appears to have the features of king Tutankhamun. This can be seen in the eyes and chin. He wears the nemes headdress and originally had human arms to hold the vases.

Title: Sphinx de Ghizeh N 12

Date: ca. 1865-1895

The body is shown to the right, squatting on the hind legs, while the head is turned toward the viewer. On the head she wears a “polos “, which was originally decorated with painted rosettes and lotus buds. The hair at the front sets in waves on the forehead, and three beaded tresses hang to right and left of the face. The rear surface is roughly worked. The sphinx wears a necklace. The details are engraved only on the front wing, towards the viewer.

The sphinx, the demonic guardian of the tomb, was set above a grave stele as a crowing.

Bumblebee Sphinx Moth also known as a Snowberry Clearwing Hummingbird Moth (Hemaris diffinis) on a Texas Thistle (Cirsium texanum).

I finally found time to sneak out and take a few nature shots this morning ~ I noticed several Texas Thistles growing in a field so I stopped to take a few shots. It was a wonderful surprise when a Bumblebee Sphinx Moth showed up to enjoy the thistles too.

The Sphinx dates from the reign of king Khafre. During the New Kingdom, Amenhotep II dedicated a new temple to Hauron-Haremakhet and this structure was added onto by later rulers.

A pleasant walk on the beach one evening and I spotted this beast rising up out of the sand, hmm is my imagination over active!? :)
