The sphinx was found in Athens Kerameikon area by German archaeologists, near two other sculptures representing a kouros, known as the “Sacred Gate Kouros”, and a lion. These archaic marble sculptures which originally had stood on grave precincts of the Athenian aristocracy, had been destroyed by the Persians in 480 B.C. and buried under the walls when the Sacred Gate was erected in the Themistoclean age.

These sphinxes can be seen at Untermyer Park and Gardens in Yonkers, New York. Made of marble, they were sculpted by Paul Manship in 1917.
The centerpiece of Kara Walker's "A Subtlety" or the Marvelous Sugar Baby is a sphinx made of bleached sugar coating an internal support structure. At 75 and 1/2 feet (23 meters) long and 35 and 1/2 feet (11 meters) high it dominates the space.
In 1931 engineers of the Egyptian government repaired the head of the Sphinx. Part of its headdress had fallen off in 1926 due to erosion, which had also cut deeply into its neck. This questionable repair was by the addition of a concrete collar between the headdress and the neck, creating an altered profile. The Sphinx, unlike the Pyramids, is carved out of the living rock. It is 241 feet (73.5 meters) long and in parts is 65 feet (20 meters) high. It faces due east,towards the equinox.

The traditional and probably still majority view is that the Great Sphinx was built at the same time as the nearby Pyramid of Khafre (Khaf-Ra, Chephren) in about 2540 B.C.E. The face of the Great Sphinx has been thought to be Khafre's, though recent evidence casts doubt on this notion (see below).
However there has been lively debate in recent years arguing that it may be anywhere from two to four times that old. John Anthony West first noticed weathering patterns on the Sphinx that were consistent with water erosion rather than erosion produced by wind and sand. These patterns were not found on other structures on the plateau. Geologist Robert Schock agreed that water erosion was in evidence.
Egypt is arid today, but about 10,000 years ago the land was wet and rainy. West and Schock conclude the Sphinx must be on the order of 7,000 to 10,000 years old in order to have the marks of water erosion they found.
Also, Robert Bauval and Graham Hancock have developed a theory that the Sphinx, when considered with the neighboring pyramids and ancient writings, is part of, and possibly the first element of, a kind of astronomical map related to the constellation Orion. They have concluded that the "best fit" for this map is found for the position of the stars as they were in 10,500 B.C.E.
Finally, there are no inscriptions or writings that directly indicate the builder or date of construction for the Sphinx. There are, in fact, some minor references that the Sphinx existed prior to the pyramids.
The evidence is controversial. Yet consider ... even using the traditional age, the Great Sphinx is 4,500 years old! Even the standing stones at ancient Stonehenge are not that old (though special use of the site itself dates to the 8th or 9th millennium). This Sphinx's great age is part of its wonder, and a big part of the reason we have insufficient written record to know more about its age and construction.
Sphinx: a mythical creature with the head of a human and the body of a lion. In Greek tradition, it has the head of a human, the haunches of a lion, and sometimes the wings of a bird. In the photo is one of the stone sphinxes guarding a hidden court in the 'Egypt' garden at Biddulph Grange Gardens, Staffordshire.

I found this beautiful moth on my neighbors wall a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn't resist taking a few shots. Thank you to philsfotos101 for the ID on this one, it is a Vine Sphinx Moth.
The Luxor is among the most recognizable hotels on the strip because of its striking design. Designed by renowned hotel architect Veldon Simpson, the main portion of the hotel is a 350-foot-high, 30-story pyramid of black glass. The hotel is marked by a large obelisk with the name of the property in lighted letters, while the porte-cochere travels underneath a massive recreation of the Great Sphinx of Giza.
The tip of the pyramid contains a fixed-position spotlight that points directly upward – it is the brightest beam in the world, and is visible from anywhere in the Las Vegas valley at night, and can be seen at flight level from above Los Angeles, California, over 275 miles away. The beam can also be seen from outer space. At ground level, on clear nights, the beam could also be seen as far south as Laughlin and even as far north as Mesquite or Beatty. It is directly straight ahead on US-93 in Arizona, north of Kingman, before reaching the Hoover Dam. In the spring, the bright light attracts huge numbers of moths into the light beam, creating a phenomenon that has been likened to snow. The beam is currently powered by 39 Xenon lamps operating at 7 kilowatts each at an hourly operating cost of $53. The beam's output is rated at 41.5 gigacandela. This translates to 30.2 billion lumens.

Ensevelie sous des couches de sable au fil des siècles à Louxor, cette allée des sphinx, dite dromos, reliait les temples d'Amon et de Karnak sur près de 2,5 km. Nectanébo 1er, premier pharaon de la XXXème dynastie (-378-360 av. JC) fit remplacer ceux représentant Amenhotep III par des sphinx à son effigie. Mais il n'en reste aujourd'hui que les deux extrémités.
La première trace de l'allée a été trouvée en 1949 avec huit statues près du temple de Louxor. Dix-sept autres statues ont ensuite été mises au jour de 1958 à 1961 et cinquante-cinq de 1961 à 1964, toutes dans un périmètre de 250 m. À l'origine, l'avenue était bordée dans tout son long de 1 057 statues, dont 807 en forme de sphinx et 250 autres avec une tête en forme de bélier.
Celles-ci sont représentées sous trois formes. La première, érigée entre les temple de Karnak et temple de Mout pendant le règne du souverain Toutânkhamon, avait un corps de lion avec une tête de bélier. La seconde avait une statue de bélier complète, construite dans une zone éloignée pendant la XVIIIe dynastie d'Amenhotep III, avant d'être transférée plus tard dans le complexe de Karnak. La troisième comprenait la plus grande partie des statues avec un corps d'un lion et une tête d'homme et s'étendaient toutes jusqu'au temple de Louxor (cf. wikipédia, merci Diego Delso pour la photo).
There are two sphinxes on the Thames Embankment, one either side of Cleopatra’s Needle. While the obelisk, erected in 1878, dates from around 1450BC, the sphinxes were created and added in 1882. They were designed by George Vulliamy and modelled by C. H. Mabey. According to the TourUK site, the bronze sphinxes were accidentally replaced facing the wrong way (that is, facing the obelisk) after being cleaned in the early years of the 20th century.
