I designed this in December 2004, but made some changes, like adding the ears and getting rid of some unwanted lines on the face. It is fully closed-back, from an uncut square.

A pair of heavy clay "feet," revealed by erosion, at the base of this cliff, reminds me of the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt. Here though, the Cape Cod version is missing its head!
All along the seashore, these types of features are occasionally revealed. These grey chunks are are ancient clay deposits, exposed as softer sand and gravel are removed by erosion. The clay and sand layers are remnants of ice age glacial deposits and ice-melt silt. A great reference here... https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/capecod/glacial.html

The sphinx is a monstrous being, with a lion's body and a king's head. It was successively inscribed with the names of the kings Amenemhat II (1898-1866 BC, 12th Dynasty), Merenptah (1213-1203 BC, 19th Dynasty) and Chechonq I (945 -924 BC, 22nd dynasty). Archaeologists see in some details indications of a more receding period, the Old Kingdom (around 2600 BC).

This colossal sphinx portrays the female pharaoh Hatshepsut with the body of a lion and a human head wearing a nemes headcloth and royal beard. The use of the sphinx to represent the king dates back to the Old Kingdom and the Great Sphinx of Giza. The sculptor has carefully observed the powerful muscles of the lion as contrasted to the handsome and attractive idealized face of the queen. It was one of six royal sphinxes that lined the processional way leading to the queen's mortuary temple at Deir el-Bahri. Recovered by the Museum's Egyptian Expedition, it was found smashed into many fragments and buried in pits near the temple. It weighs more than seven tons.

The Great Sphinx was most likely built in approximately 2500 BC for the pharaoh Khafre, the builder of the Second Pyramid at Giza. Facing directly from West to East, it stands on the Giza Plateau on the west bank of the Nile in Giza, Egypt. The Sphinx is a monolith carved into the bedrock of the plateau, which also served as the quarry for the pyramids and other monuments in the area. The nummulitic limestone of the area consists of layers which offer differing resistance to erosion (mostly caused by wind and windblown sand), leading to the uneven degradation apparent in the Sphinx's face and body.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercury_(mythology) Known to me as Mercury, Hermes was the god of so many worldly and other worldly themes. I see faces and character in so many rocks in nature. Long Canyon Rd. Is a rough dirt road west of Potash Rd. along the Colorado River, just west of Moab where I saw this outcrop. As I continued to study this photo, the face, without much of a nose, began to resemble the Sphinx.
