Chroma is the culmination of Manchester artist Liz West’s interests and ideas over a five-year period. This new body of work, site-specific to BLANKSPACE, explores the themes of colour theory, collecting and the exploration of real and illusory space.
West’s playful and magical works, each of which she builds by hand, consist of unexpected and carefully arranged combinations of materials. Systems of ordering, classification and coding are applied in the development and generation of West’s work. She invokes the monumental, whilst utilising commonplace objects that are found and collected from the world around her.

The specfic nature of the promotion went like this: for every strikeout a Mets pitcher threw during their games at San Diego August 15-18, the Mets would reduce the ticket price by 1% for select seats for the August 24-29 games against Detroit and Philadelphia. Mets pitchers recorded a combiled total of 42 strikeouts against San Diego, so the discount came to 42% for seats in Baseline Box, Left Field Landing and Promenade Outfield seating.

Wow, flickr uploadr gone rusty. Been soooo busy :-( I've actually taken quite a few pics, but evenings have been pretty full of work. Now, that's not so bad as it might sound as i really enjoy (most of) my work, i find it very fulfilling.
But i also love doing this, so need to restore a little balance.
This is in the English Lake District, specifically Grasmere. Looking from a little wood called Penny Rock Wood back up the lake to Helm Crag. This is widely thought of as a little starter hill that you do the day you arrive, to get you (specfically, legs and lungs) n the mood for bigger climbs in the days ahead.
I hope all is well with you all - i will try and catch up on your latest shots.

This is Kevin. I was walking home the other day, past Harvard Stadium, when I heard a lot of noise. A game. A lacrosse game, specfically. I walk towards the stairway to the stands and met Kevin. He joyfully approached me and asked if I was here to watch the game or climb the stairs. (Many people work out or train by running up and down the stairs in the stadium.) I said neither. I said I heard the game, and the next thing I knew here I was...thanks legs. I told him about my 100 Strangers project, and he agreed for me to take a few shots of him. As I was leaving he called back to me, "what number am I?" "2", I said. Thanks Kevin for being my #2 stranger...and you never know, I may come back to run those stairs...

"Faux African Tradebeads", old African tradebeads are wonderful beads, some of them are rare and very expensive. This jewelry set imitates some very special red beads which originally were made in Holland, they have a specfic name, I'm not quite sure but I think it's "goose eggs". Little brass beads from Ghana are completing the set.

The Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Visitor Center is on U.S. 25-E, on the Kentucky side of the tunnel. It is a MUST stop, especially for first time visitors. There is an exhibit area, a gift shop, and two different short orientation films which are shown on rotation. One focuses on the life and times of Daniel Boone and the other is more specfically about the Cumberland Gap. Both are excellent - well worth taking your time to see.
At the Visitor Center you will learn that there is much more to the Park than is obvious from just driving through. For instance, it is here that you can sign up to take a lantern tour through the Cumberland Gap Cave, or catch their shuttle to visit the Hensley Settlement a few miles from the Gap, to learn how the pioneer settlers lived.

Waste disposal in Basel is unique in the sense that one doesn't have to have some kind of a subscription or pay the government for such a service. The waste disposal is managed by a corporation (probably private). Instead of subscription, they require you buy a specific waste bag that one can buy from the market. You put your waste inside this bag and put it outside your building on specfic days. The waste collection truck would only collect the garbage that is inside these particular bags (like the one pictured above). And yes, these bags do cost a fortune.
November 2017
The front cover for the project "Travel".
In school, I was tasked with creating a travel diary in eight pictures and a matching frontal and back cover. Rather than showing the conventional idea, which comes to mind when hearing travelling, I decided to travel through the mind. Specfically a journey of someone suffering from chronic depression. The albums of the band twenty one pilots served as inspiration for the journey shown in the eight papers. Each page was inspired by one or more songs, which touch on depression and the person affected.
The collage on the front cover shows the band members, Tyler Joseph, the singer and Josh Dun, the drummer and extracts from interviews they have given. The writing underneath the ribbon reads "Emotional Roadshow", which describes the journey of a person suffering from chronic depression and is also the name of their most recent tour. The drawing, created using black fineliners over the collage is a man's face, which shows the beginning of the journey and it's main character. Behind the eyes of the drawn figure is a part of a photo of white sunglasses, which Tyler frequently wears at concerts and music videos and thus an important part of his appearance. The colours as well as their clothes mirror the aethetic of their latest album "Blurryface" and reoccur throughout the music videos, appearance and tours. The bright red and black, both menacing colours, contrast each other and yet compliment each other, making them unique and memorable to the observer.

Parv Venkitasubramaniam's research interests are in developing theoretical foundations for privacy in networks. Specfically, he applies tools in statistical signal processing, information theory and game-theory to study fundamental trade-offs between privacy and performance in networks under different adversarial conditions. He is also interested in studying anonymity in a more general category of networked systems such as peer production, smart grid networks and transportation systems.
Petaluma firefighters are using carbon dioxide gas to
extinguishing a fire in a canola grain silo that has been smoldering since
Sunday night.
Petaluma Fire Chief Chris Albertson said on Thursday crews are
pumping the gas into the top of the 110-foot silo at the Dairyman's Feed &
Supply Cooperative on Washington Street. The fire flared up around midnight
on Thursday.
Firefighters had been pumping the heavier-than-air gas into the
bottom of the silo but designed a nozzle and hooked up a high-pressure gas
line from a truck to the top of the silo on Thursday, Albertson said. The
hope is the carbon dioxide will percolate down through the smoldering grain
and extinguish what's left of the fire, Albertson said.
It could still take a couple days for the fire to go out or it
might have to burn itself out, Albertson said.
Neighboring businesses and residents have complained about the
"burned meat" odor and are reporting headaches, Albertson said, but the
burning vegetable matter is not emitting toxic fumes.
Several years ago firefighters tried to douse a grain silo fire
with water but that only created an oatmeal-like sludge that took days to
remove by wheel barrow, Albertson said.
Once the grain is no longer burning, it will be placed on a
conveyor belt and hauled away, Albertson said.
The smoldering fire began when 80 tons of old grain began
decomposing and spontaneously combusted firefighters said.

My spontaneous adventure has come to a halt. There were many good guesses and some right on the money. I enjoyed how so many of my flickr pals sent me private notes to make their guesses so as not to be a spoiler or tip off others. Jetsquirrel guessed Savannah, Georgia correctly...she was the most accurate and specfic guess of the bunch...granted she revised her guesses a time or two. The beach and ocean scenes were from Hilton Head Island, South Carolina...my first trip there and it was awesome...more pics to follow in the days ahead.
I'm back to work tomorrow and there is an unfortunate dread that sets in...I love almost every part of my job, but there is an element of yuck that pulls me down...a wise gentleman once shared a latin phrase with me that is loosely interpreted as, "Don't Let the Bastards Get You Down"...a good mantra that I must repeat regularly.
when i called to ask about access levels patrick explained that there were stairs but also were places you could hang out.... hhahahah My specfic important question was "how do i get a room closest to the bathroom without stairs in between" and this was the closest though he offered to clean out a sort of utility room and move a bed in there for us. I said I could do the bedroom with 3 stairs up, a courtyard, and 3 more steps up and asked if there were handrails or grab bars in the bathroom. When i showed up patrick had so sweetly moved this ramp to cover the stairs to the bedroom! I was really touched.
But the funny part is the ramp was actually really hard for me. I couldn't get the chair to it by myself because of deep gravel in the courtyard (as you see here in photo) And walking up it was harder than stairs because of there being no handrail. i will send him a letter explaining about handrails and grab bars and how they can be important. I managed t his ramp all weekend pretty well with a cane -- sometimes it was easy but mostly it scared the hell out of me especially going down.
Also despite our long conversation I never realized the main areas of the community house were up a big flight of stairs PLUS once you were in it, there were stairs internally to go anywhere at all and the bathroom was at the bottom - so there was never an area where i could be without negotiating them (often without handrails) A challenge and I am lucky that after the long drive I could do it and bounced back just fine. i credit my "physical therapy"...
People *want* their place to be accessible and they feel weirdly guilty and so they are over hopeful and vague in their descriptions of access. I ahve learned to ask very specific questions.
