It is now the depths of winter here in Melbourne, and it has been the coldest winter since 1947. The other day when I went to hand deliver a birthday card, as I was walking back, there was a break in the rainclouds and showers long enough to give me some sunshine and blue skies, and I walked past a garden full of bright purple and magenta salvias. A raindrop glinting in the sunlight on the tip of a purple salvia caught my eye, and as I always carry my little camera with me, I stopped to photograph it. Everywhere I looked, there were salvias that looked like they had been dressed in millions of diamonds as they sparkled in the momentary burst of sunlight. The vibrant colour in the bloom is very striking, and the way it is covered in raindrops, makes this salvia a real bejewelled beauty.

Vectrons pantograph giving some sparks and lighting up the scenery while pushing IC 34 all the way from Rovaniemi to Helsinki on a frosty winter evening. Todays service was running around 80 minutes late.

On the mornings when I wake feeling inspired, and can pour some of that into a picture it wakes my brain more effectively than the strongest coffee.

This is a wonderful combination of the M.A.B.E.L.-6 Cybernetic Head and Mechanical Owl Pet from LOGO, with the Cyberdoll body joints from Salt & Pepper. The 'rust' skin on the rest of the body is from Fallen Gods, The hairbase from Mina and the Bulb attachments from CABALPIER. The decor items are from Dirty Rat.

History

VITAL SPARK, (ex-EILEAN EISDEAL, ex-ELSEDA, ex-VIC 72), was built by Brown's Shipyard, Hull, in 1944, and was sold out of naval service at Devonport Dockyard (where she had been a stores carrier) in 1968, and was then motorised and renamed ELSEDA, based at Troon as a cargo vessel. In 1972, she was bought by an owner based on the Isle of Mull, and worked around the islands dredging coal from sunken vessels. In 1984, she was sold to an owner of Easdale Island, near Oban, and was renamed EILEAN EASDEAL to run a inter-island cargo service around the Western Isles until 1994 (when the Scottish Office withdrew its subsidy for Scottish Shipping). In 2001, she was brought to the Inveraray Maritime Museum, where she still is, and in 2006, she was re-registered as VITAL SPARK, the name of the ficitional puffer that appeared in the Para Handy books by Neil Munro.

Political discourse has become our lives. The news cycle is constant. We are expected to understand and have fully formed opinions on everything immediately. And it truly is everything.

On top of that, our media crafts stories for us rather than reporting the facts. Lately, almost all of our media is capitulating to authoritarianism.

Our reaction as people, voters, artists, and citizens isnât to sort it out and to have some kind of discourse to make our society better for everyone. Our only objective is to win. Itâs not even about being right â we are living in a largely post-factual atmosphere now â it is simply and only about winning.

With winning comes power, but only for the already-powerful. For us, the regular folks just trying to survive, the win is merely for the sake of winning. Our love of absurd competition, especially reality TV, directly led to this.

I'm not saying that photography contests and juried shows lead to fascism. But I am saying that we are already weighed down by competition, so why add to it? Why do this to ourselves?
