Long Exposure - Hand-held.

I spotted the space station when I got home last night and did not have time to get my tripod so I took this hand-held long exposure shot and this is what I got. What appears to be stars in the background is actually noise which I purposely left in the image.

I did see the Tiangong 1 pass visually, but don't see it here. The brightness was varying. The\ motion during 2 sec exposure was significant.

Sky was getting quite bright, sun only 7.5 º below horizon.

This is a selection of frames from a video I did of the ISS & of the Space Shuttle Atlantis as it passed over the UK on Friday night. I used a 8" Newtonian scope & a Webcam to record the footage, And I tried to guide the scope by hand while watching through the finder scope.

Edit: After a bit of research, the shuttle docked at Harmony/Pressurized Mating Adapter-2 (from Wikipedia) So i'm not sure were it is now.

International Space Station & Shuttle fly over Ness. 27th Feb 2011 @ 19:04.

distance: 926.4km height above Earth: 356.1km

10 x 5sec shots, to light for one full pass!

15 second exposure of the Space Station going overhead.

My station arm and my new pirate fighter. The station arm is 46 studs, so we'll see how it does suspended between the main hub and my secondary hub.

The first & brightest of five flyovers of the ISS tonight. Its orbit is oddly lined up perpendicular to the sun, so it's never entering the earth's shadow. Hope the astronauts up there brought sunscreen!

This image is a composition of 11 15-second exposures, with the gaps painted in manually in Photoshop.

The International Space Station cruises out of the sunset over Surrey at around 17,000mph.

While setting up for tonights eclipse i ran a few test shots & came upon this one.

Is it possible that that small blob is the ISS, or are we about to be invaded by aliens?

hopefully it happens again when the eclipse is in full swing.

What happened to the models and props used in 2001?

Qbrick15 writes ;

Frederick Ordway (technical/scientific advisor to Kubrick) said that almost all of the props were destroyed. He said that, at one time, there was a plan to donate all of it to the Smithsonian, but that Stanley felt uncomfortable about it because he felt that it may destroy the illusion of the film for people.

Then Ordway said that a high school (Borehamwood?) was supposed to get all of the artifacts from the film. This never happened and the school was upset about it. Ordway said that he believes almost all of the artifacts have been destroyed and he hinted that they were destroyed when MGM closed their Borehamwood facility in the 1970's.

2001 Space Station

Trevor Parsons writes ;

I was at college in Stevenage (about 15 miles away from St Albans in the early 1970's). Our studio, we were studying graphic art, faced the entrance to the local corporation dump. One afternoon in 1974 a truck turned up after the dump was closed & left some crates in the entrance way. They contained 2 of the models used in 2001, the space wheel & one of the pods. Of course they may not have been the only ones but I believe they were genuine (the film had been made about 20 miles away at Boreham Wood the old MGM studios). By the time I got there the pod had been taken, the space wheel damaged & taken out its wooden case. I took pictures of it, its surface had been covered with bits of old plastic construction kits to make it look more technical when filmed. I desperately wanted to take it home, but I only had a motor bike & a room 8 feet by 10 so it was not really workable. It was smashed up by kids a few days later.

An overview of the Space Station and the microspace display, with Rich's larger craft in the left background, my small craft in front of them, some of Rich's cargo ships in the foreground, my Olympus missile boat behind them, and a rather impressive red capital ship I would've liked to look more closely at. (That's why you get all your building done BEFORE con, BTW.) In the far backfield, you can see my Pantopian forces and Joe Meno's micro-classic space display.

Shuttle Endeavour departing from the International Space Station for its final trip home. This was my 1st time ever really seeing the space shuttle clearly with my own eyes.

At this point, it's 8 miles separated from the ISS, 215 miles overhead, range 125 miles.
