What happened to the models and props used in 2001?

Qbrick15 writes ;

Frederick Ordway (technical/scientific advisor to Kubrick) said that almost all of the props were destroyed. He said that, at one time, there was a plan to donate all of it to the Smithsonian, but that Stanley felt uncomfortable about it because he felt that it may destroy the illusion of the film for people.

Then Ordway said that a high school (Borehamwood?) was supposed to get all of the artifacts from the film. This never happened and the school was upset about it. Ordway said that he believes almost all of the artifacts have been destroyed and he hinted that they were destroyed when MGM closed their Borehamwood facility in the 1970's.

I was at college in Stevenage (about 15 miles away from St Albans in the early 1970's). Our studio, we were studying graphic art, faced the entrance to the local corporation dump. One afternoon in 1974 a truck turned up after the dump was closed & left some crates in the entrance way. They contained 2 of the models used in 2001, the space wheel & one of the pods. Of course they may not have been the only ones but I believe they were genuine (the film had been made about 20 miles away at Boreham Wood the old MGM studios). By the time I got there the pod had been taken, the space wheel damaged & taken out its wooden case. I took pictures of it, its surface had been covered with bits of old plastic construction kits to make it look more technical when filmed. I desperately wanted to take it home, but I only had a motor bike & a room 8 feet by 10 so it was not really workable. It was smashed up by kids a few days later.

Shuttle Endeavour departing from the International Space Station for its final trip home. This was my 1st time ever really seeing the space shuttle clearly with my own eyes.

At this point, it's 8 miles separated from the ISS, 215 miles overhead, range 125 miles.

This is the Space Shuttle Atlantis (left hand streak) and the International Space Station (right streak) around 10:00 p.m. local time on June 19, 2007 as they passed overhead. Atlantis had undocked from ISS a few hours earlier, so they were on slightly different orbits. You can see the stars of the Big Dipper's handle on the left (including the famous double Mizar and Alcor).

This overhead view of the Skylab Space Station was taken from the Departing Skylab Command/Service Module during the Skylab 2's final fly-around inspection. The single solar panel is quite evident as well as the parasol solar shield, rigged to replace the missing micrometeoroid shield. Both the second solar panel and the micrometeoroid shield were torn away during a mishap in the original Skylab 1 liftoff and orbital insertion.

I was walking around downtown Budapest on a nice day, when I looked up and thought: I'm looking out the windows of a space station, down at the Blue Marble beneath. Maybe I just need to see a psychiatrist, but that's the first thing I thought.

It's actually the 5-star hotel Boscolo (aka New York Palace) in the 7th district of Budapest, partly illuminated by the setting sun.

Ever wondered what the underside of a snail looks like?...... no, I haven't either.

I'd like to think that it is floating with the stars but it's just a dirty window.

The ISS rises out of the Sunset tracing a pencil thin line of light as it goes. About 1/3rd of the way up the frame it passes close to a little knot of stars known as the Pleiades or seven sisters. As the earth turns the stars appear to trace short arcs during the three minute exposure. (Yes,we really are spinning that fast!)

"SpaceBall — A Trip To The Stars" is 2007's premier project of The Youth Mural Program sponsored by The City of Santa Fe Arts Commission and WareHouse 21 in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

A group of young artists led by mentor and professional mural artist Jenn Costas came together and reclaimed the buildings of Franklin Miles Park from chronic tags and graffiti when they dreamed up the idea of creating a SpaceBall theme.

Photo documented by marty kleva and GemFireAir through the months of April to September 2007, the entire project is the subject of a ten minute video: "Santa Fe SpaceBall — Pitch To The Stars"

International Space Station Payload Operation Center Nov 18 2013

International Space Station (ISS) Payload Operations center control room at German aerospace agency DLR in Cologne. 2 photos panorama created with Hugin.

This image shows the ISS airlock. The hatch can be seen at the side of the near end. The wider portion has lockers for spacesuits.

The ISS Hardware Integration Facility runs tests to ensure that all the space station modules, the products of many nations, work correctly with each other before launch. Most, if not all, of the modules seen here are now in orbit.

This image was taken on an April 2001 education trip to NASA for school pupils from Wales and Cornwall. At that time it was possible to go beyond the tourist route; the ISS modules seen here are real and not the mock ups shown to the public. 9/11 changed all that when we returned in 2002.

This image was taken on film and scanned shortly afterwards. The EXIF data refers to the scan.

This is a picture of the front half of the first Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), Jules Verne, which the European Space Agency (ESA) will use to transport supplies to the International Space Station.

This pic is/was in Explore. Its highest rating was #490 on 5 January 2008.
