Jaume PLENSA

Born in Barcelona in 1955, Jaume Plensa lives and works in Barcelona and Paris. He studied at La Llotja (college of art and design) and the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Saint George. Since 1980, when he had his first exhibition in Barcelona, he has lived and worked in Germany, Belgium, England, France, Japan, the United States, and Spain. He has had major solo shows in museums and sculpture parks. Among others, he was invited to present the work Together at the 56th Venice Biennale, in the nave of the San Giorgio Maggiore basilica. Many of his works are permanent works of public art, of which the best known is The Crown Fountain, installed in Millennium Park in Chicago in 2004.

Source is installed at the main entrance to downtown Montréal, in a landscaped terrace at the intersection of Boulevard Robert-Bourassa and Rue Wellington. The stainless-steel sculpture consists of a random intertwining of letters taken from Latin, Greek, Chinese, Arab, Cyrillic, Hindi, Hebrew, and Japanese alphabets, combined to form a monumental figure in a sitting position. The work is an allegory for humanity: like cells are assembled to form the human body, the letters form words, and people form a community. Source represents the wealth of cultures that Montréal has welcomed during its almost four centuries of existence. A symbol of the city’s past, present, and future, Source, seen in the light of day or under its night-time lighting, invites residents to walk, dream, and meet.

By creating Source for the 375th anniversary of the foundation of Montréal, the artist wanted to take into account the importance of water in the city’s history – for trade, immigration, and communications – but also the importance of the place of Indigenous peoples. Source, a word that is identical in French and English, refers to the birthplace of a watercourse, but also represents the roots of a city’s energy and vitality: its inhabitants and their origins, the fluidity and creativity of ideas, and the cycles of movement and renewal.

Associated events

Source was created within the context of the redevelopment project for the south threshold of the Bonaventure expressway, constituting a legacy for the 375th anniversary of the foundation of Montréal. The integration of Source into the Bonaventure legacy was made possible through an exceptional contribution by the Chrétien-Desmarais family.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/26_Broadway

26 Broadway (also known as the Standard Oil Building) is a 31-story, 159 m, 520 ft New York City Designated Landmark at the southern tip of Manhattan at Bowling Green. The structure is currently the 197th tallest building in New York City and the 572nd tallest building in the United States.

History

26 Broadway around 1900

The building which was originally built in 1885 according to design specifications by architect Francis H. Kimball, when Standard Oil moved its location from Cleveland, Ohio. Standard Oil's first building on the site was a 10-story building 86 feet wide which extended between Broadway and North Street. It was designed by Ebenezer L. Roberts. In 1895, six stories were added and a 27-foot-wide (8.2 m) extension was made on its north side designed by Kimball & Thompson. After World War I, Walter C. Teagle made the decision to greatly expand the structure by buying all four of its neighboring buildings on the block; and to either demolish them or extensively renovate them so that the new building looked like one.

It was extensively overhauled in 1921-1928 by Thomas Hastings the surviving partner of Carrère and Hastings with Shreve, Lamb and Blake as associate architects. Hastings, who had helped design the Cunard Building (later called the Standard & Poors Building) across the street at 25 Broadway, was chosen as lead architect. At the time of construction, the pyramid was the tallest tower at the tip of Manhattan and was illuminated as a beacon for ships entering the harbor.

Standard Oil of New Jersey (then called Esso), moved to 75 Rockefeller Plaza in 1946. The Mobil division moved to 150 East 42nd Street in 1954. Standard Oil sold the building in 1956. It is one of the first buildings in Manhattan to have setbacks and is topped by a pyramid modeled on the Mausoleum of Maussollos. The building was designated as a New York City landmark in 1995.

Coagulation and flocculation process at the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency (PVWMA) Water Resources Center that sanitizes wastewater for direct use or blending with ground (well) water for the approximately $900,000,000 of crops per year, in Watsonville, CA, on Thursday, August 27, 2015.

The Pajaro Valley growers do not use surface water resources from coastal mountain ranges, rivers, aqueducts and reservoirs. Farms and cut flower growers in this valley pump 98% of agricultural water from underground water sources. There are rivers and streams in the valley, but not for agriculture. Despite this, and the current critical drought, agriculture continues to grow, and so does the demands for water.

PVWMA is working with the Department of the Interior (DOI) U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) to develop a hydrologic model, a tool to help plan water management facilities. This has led to the construction of pipelines and water supply facilities that provide a supplement source of water. One of them is the Recycle Water Facility (seen) in the Water Resources Center, adjacent to the Pajaro River.

The Water Resources Center’s first facility was constructed in the 1920’s to remove solids from the City of Watsonville, and the Town of Pajaro’s wastewater. In the 1970’s the second phase treatment facility was completed to accomplish biological (micro-organisms) and chemical processing that sufficiently treated the water for discharge into the Monterey Bay National Marine Refuge. Since the 2009 opening of its third phase, the Water Recycling Facility, a drought-tolerant operation takes in 6-million gallons per day from the second phase facility, and produces a disinfected supply of water for high value agriculture. Here, coagulation, sedimentation and flocculation occurs, followed by filtration and ultraviolet light treatment to sterilize the reclaimed water. Standards are set by California Department of Public Health, per Title 22.

It produces approximately 2,000 gallons per minute or 4,000 acre/ft. during the agricultural year. Reclaimed water users are trained; the water is highly monitored and government tested. Reclaimed water in part or whole is delivered through distribution pipes that are painted an industry standard purple color, and serves as a public reminder of their efforts.

The process sometimes leaves more salt than specific crops can tolerate. To reduce the percentage, it is blended with ground water or recharge water with lower salt levels to adjust for a crop’s tolerance level, keeping the farms productive and workers employed.

In line with it’s efforts use and produce sustainable and renewable resources, the facility uses photovoltaic (solar panels) to generate electricity to help offset the energy needs of the four 350hp distribution pumps that can move 12,000 gallons per minute out the growers along the 20 mile long pipeline, who at the end need pressurized flows of 300-5,000 gallons per minute. Its 16,000 sq. ft. office building is LEED Platinum and Net Zero Electricity rated and that exemplifies and supports education of the public through guided tours of the facility, exhibits, and center.

Agency was formed in 1984 to address long-term ground water over draught issues of lowered aquifers, subsidence and saltwater intrusion. Lowered aquifers resulted from more water being pumped out of below sea level aquifers than can be refilled. The natural means of recharging (refilling) the aquifer comes from rain and other freshwater sources. The water filters down, through the ground, to underground spaces that collect in water basins.

One of the major consumers of the water is a Harkins Slough Managed Aquifer Recharge and Recovery Facility that pumps winter runoff from a slough (or river channel) to recharge a 14-acre percolation basin (a shallow hilltop lake) where it percolates into the groundwater aquifer. The stored water is either pumped out in the summer for irrigation, or is kept underground to recharge the aquifer.

Only a few miles away, the Pacific Ocean saltwater in Monterey Bay soaks the coastline and exerts a natural push into the land. With out enough water in the aquifer to push back the seawater intrusion, salt enters the aquifer. If too salty, the water harms plants instead of nourishing them, making it unusable. When seawater enters an aquifer that is below sea level, it is not always possible to reverse it, permanently loosing a freshwater aquifer.

The Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency is a state-chartered water management district, and paid for the construction of the Water Recycling Facility, now owned by City of Watsonville. The water it produces belongs to PVWMA.

The agency has a three-part Base and Management Plan that focuses on water conservation, optimization of existing facilities and new facilities.

In the 30 years PVWMA has been in business their approach has evolved. By bring in as many public, business and governmental stakeholders they can hear more solutions and work in a collaborative fashion. Some of the stakeholders are USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), DOI USGS, Resource Conservation Districts (RCD) Community Water Dialogue (CWD,) Central Coast Agricultural Water Quality Coalition. Stakeholder help them reach out and teach efficiencies to agricultural businesses and homeowners.

St. Louis is the second-largest city in Missouri, United States. It sits near the confluence of the Mississippi and the Missouri Rivers, on the western bank of the latter. As of 2020, the city proper had a population of around 301,500, while the bi-state metropolitan area, which extends into Illinois, had an estimated population of over 2.8 million, making it the largest metropolitan area in Missouri, the second-largest in Illinois, the seventh-largest in the Great Lakes Megalopolis, and the 20th-largest in the United States.

Before European settlement, the area was a regional center of Native American Mississippian culture. St. Louis was founded on February 14, 1764, by French fur traders Gilbert Antoine de St. Maxent, Pierre Laclède and Auguste Chouteau, who named it for Louis IX of France. In 1764, following France's defeat in the Seven Years' War, the area was ceded to Spain. In 1800, it was retroceded to France, which sold it three years later to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase; the city was then the point of embarkation for the Corps of Discovery on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In the 19th century, St. Louis became a major port on the Mississippi River; from 1870 until the 1920 census, it was the fourth-largest city in the country. It separated from St. Louis County in 1877, becoming an independent city and limiting its own political boundaries. St. Louis had a brief run as a world-class city in the early 20th century. In 1904, it hosted the Louisiana Purchase Exposition and the Summer Olympics.

A "Gamma" global city with a metropolitan GDP of more than $160 billion in 2017, metropolitan St. Louis has a diverse economy with strengths in the service, manufacturing, trade, transportation, and tourism industries. It is home to nine of the ten Fortune 500 companies based in Missouri. Major companies headquartered or with significant operations in the city include Ameren Corporation, Peabody Energy, Nestlé Purina PetCare, Anheuser-Busch, Wells Fargo Advisors, Stifel Financial, Spire, Inc., MilliporeSigma, FleishmanHillard, Square, Inc., U.S. Bank, Anthem BlueCross and Blue Shield, Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Centene Corporation, and Express Scripts.

Major research universities include Saint Louis University and Washington University in St. Louis. The Washington University Medical Center in the Central West End neighborhood hosts an agglomeration of medical and pharmaceutical institutions, including Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

St. Louis has three professional sports teams: the St. Louis Cardinals of Major League Baseball, the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League, and the St. Louis BattleHawks of the newly formed XFL. In 2019, the city was awarded a Major League Soccer franchise, St. Louis City SC, which is expected to begin play upon the completion of a 22,500-seat stadium in the city's Downtown West neighborhood in 2023. Among the city's notable sights is the 630-foot (192 m) Gateway Arch in the downtown area. St. Louis is also home to the St. Louis Zoo and the Missouri Botanical Garden, which has the second-largest herbarium in North America.

Forest Park is a public park in western St. Louis, Missouri. It is a prominent civic center and covers 1,326 acres (5.37 km2). Opened in 1876, more than a decade after its proposal, the park has hosted several significant events, including the Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904 and the 1904 Summer Olympics. Bounded by Washington University in St. Louis, Skinker Boulevard, Lindell Boulevard, Kingshighway Boulevard, and Oakland Avenue, it is known as the "Heart of St. Louis" and features a variety of attractions, including the St. Louis Zoo, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum, and the St. Louis Science Center.

Since the early 2000s, it has carried out a $100 million restoration through a public-private partnership aided by its Master Plan. Changes have extended to improving landscaping and habitat as well. The park's acreage includes meadows and trees and a variety of ponds, manmade lakes, and freshwater streams. For several years, the park has been restoring prairie and wetlands areas of the park. It has reduced flooding and attracted a much greater variety of birds and wildlife, which have settled in the new natural habitats.

Budapest is the capital and most populous city of Hungary. It is the tenth-largest city in the European Union by population within city limits and the second-largest city on the river Danube. The estimated population of the city in 2025 is 1,782,240. This includes the city's population and surrounding suburban areas, over a land area of about 525 square kilometres (203 square miles). Budapest, which is both a city and municipality, forms the centre of the Budapest metropolitan area, which has an area of 7,626 square kilometres (2,944 square miles) and a population of 3,019,479. It is a primate city, constituting 33% of the population of Hungary.

The history of Budapest began when an early Celtic settlement transformed into the Roman town of Aquincum, the capital of Lower Pannonia. The Hungarians arrived in the territory in the late 9th century, but the area was pillaged by the Mongols in 1241–42. Re-established Buda became one of the centres of Renaissance humanist culture by the 15th century. The Battle of Mohács, in 1526, was followed by nearly 150 years of Ottoman rule. After the reconquest of Buda in 1686, the region entered a new age of prosperity, with Pest-Buda becoming a global city after the unification of Buda, Óbuda and Pest on 17 November 1873, with the name 'Budapest' given to the new capital. Budapest also became the co-capital of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a great power that dissolved in 1918, following World War I. The city was the focal point of the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 and the Battle of Budapest in 1945, as well as the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.

Budapest is a global city with strengths in commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. Budapest is Hungary's financial centre. Budapest hosts the headquarters of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, the European Police College and the first foreign office of the China Investment Promotion Agency. Over 40 colleges and universities are located in Budapest, including Eötvös Loránd University, Corvinus University, Semmelweis University, University of Veterinary Medicine Budapest and the Budapest University of Technology and Economics. Opened in 1896, the city's subway system, the Budapest Metro, serves 1.27 million, while the Budapest Tram Network serves 1.08 million passengers daily.

The central area of Budapest along the Danube is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has several notable monuments of classical architecture, including the Hungarian Parliament and the Buda Castle. The city also has around 80 geothermal springs, the largest thermal water cave system, second largest synagogue, and third largest Parliament building in the world. Budapest attracts around 12 million international tourists per year, making it a highly popular destination in Europe.

Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, United States. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters).

The canyon and adjacent rim are contained within Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon–Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Havasupai Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation. The surrounding area is contained within the Baaj Nwaavjo I'tah Kukveni – Ancestral Footprints of the Grand Canyon National Monument. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of the preservation of the Grand Canyon area and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.

Nearly two billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted. While some aspects about the history of incision of the canyon are debated by geologists, several recent studies support the hypothesis that the Colorado River established its course through the area about 5 to 6 million years ago. Since that time, the Colorado River has driven the down-cutting of the tributaries and retreat of the cliffs, simultaneously deepening and widening the canyon.

For thousands of years, the area has been continuously inhabited by Native Americans, who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon a holy site, and made pilgrimages to it. The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540.

The Library's famous Rose Main Reading Room (Room 315) is a majestic 78 feet (23.8 m) wide and 297 feet (90.5 m) long, with 52-foot (15.8 m) high ceilings. The room is lined with thousands of reference works on open shelves along the floor level and along the balcony, lit by massive windows and grand chandeliers, and furnished with sturdy wood tables, comfortable chairs, and brass lamps. It is also equipped with computers providing access to library collections and the Internet as well as docking facilities for laptops. Readers study books brought to them from the library's closed stacks. There are special rooms for notable authors and scholars, many of whom have done important research and writing at the Library. But the Library has always been about more than scholars; during the Great Depression, many ordinary people, out of work, used the Library to improve their lot in life, as they still do.
