Officer Anthony Vargas is a veteran member of the police department and has worked various assignments prior to joining forces with his first partner, K9 "Mitch." Together, the team supports the CSUN community through patrol work and narcotics detection.
"What's it like having a dog for a partner? It's awesome. It's great. I have somebody to keep me warm in the car. I'm responsible for him, and I don't get lonely. A typical day in the life of Mitch and Oft. Vargas? Well, our shift starts at 6:30 p.m., so we sleep all day and then we get up and we come to work. Basically what I do at first is obedience work -- make sure that it's in his mind that we're working now and it kind of reinforces that and get us in that groove for the shift.
We do (patrol) the campus and we have a one-mine radius from the campus. We do traffic enforcement on Reseda, Nordhoff, Zelzah - the main streets around the campus because whatever happens on Reseda and Nordhoff affects the campus in some way.
The skills that Mitch has... he's trained in patrol work, he's trained in obedience, bite work, suspect tracking, article searches... if a bad guy runs and discards an item, a gun or something, Mitch can track that. Lost kids... if we have an item that the kid has left behind, a backpack or a sweater, he can sniff that and track the person wherever he's gone. Another skill is, he's trained in narcotics work. He's trained to detect five odors of narcotics: cocaine, methamphetamine, heroine, ecstasy and marijuana -- those are the five odors he can detect. Part of my job here at CSUN is to randomly to checks of the mailrooms, so we check the mailrooms at PPM and also at UVA, the dorms.
How's Mitch helping the campus make a difference? I believe just his presence alone... people feel that the presence of a dog on campus ... they're safer. We do the narcotics searches on campus, which keeps the campus safer, and he's a great PR tool for police officers. A lot of people, they have this thing about police officers, but when they see the dog, it makes them more approachable. Many times on campus I get approached, 'Oh my gosh, that's a beautiful dog, can I pet him?' and that's an ice-breaker. People feel safer with a police officer and a dog on campus, and Mitch is a very sociable dog, so anybody can come up and he loves to be petted, he loves belly rubs. He's a very social dog and a very friendly dog. I like the fact that when he's not working, he's the perfect family pet. I have my kids at home, a 5 and 7 year old and he love those kids - he'll do anything for those kids."
