Seven larval tapeworms (one removed in this picture) was extracted from this small fish - amazing!

When the pods are ripe they turn completely brown. Some of the Carob trees in Anoyria are at least 150 years old !

The seeds from the carob pods are not all the same size but are exactly the same weight.

In ancient times the carob seeds were used as a reference to measure small amounts of weight.

In the jewellery trade the word carat is derived form the days of weighing with carob seeds.

Word History

Carat - 1469, from M.Fr. carat, from It. carato, from Arabic qirat "pod, husk, weight of 4 grains," from Gk. keration "carob seed," lit. "little horn" dim. of keras "horn." Carob beans were a standard for weighing small quantities. As a measure of diamond weight, from 1575. The Gk. measure was the equivalent of the Roman siliqua, which was one-twentyfourth of a golden solidus of Constantine; hence the word took on a sense of "a proportion of one twentyfourth" and became a measure of gold purity (1555). Eighteen carat gold is eighteen parts gold, six parts alloy. It is unlikely that the carat was ever a measure of weight for gold.

Solidus, Raiden and Ocelot from METAL GEAR SOLID 2: Sons of Liberty.

The vast number of surviving Byzantine coins attests to the level of trade across the empire. Controlled and supervised by the emperor, the producers of coins took care to represent his authority and reflect his stature. Talented artists were recruited to engrave the dies (molds) used for the striking of coins. Emperors increasingly came to include their heirs and co-emperors on their coinage, as well as other family members or even earlier rulers. Coins were recognized, then as now, as small, portable works of art. With their inscriptions and images, Byzantine coins provide valuable documentation of historical events and a record of the physical appearance of the emperors. The coins shown here include the solidus, the basic gold coin of 24 karats; the tremissis, a gold coin of one-third the weight and value of the solidus; and the nomisma, which in the 10th century replaced the solidus as the standard gold coin.

Deinotherium ("terrible beast" derived from the Ancient Greek δεινός, deinos meaning "terrible" and θηρίον, therion meaning "beast") was a large prehistoric relative of modern-day elephants that appeared in the Middle Miocene and survived until the Early Pleistocene. During that time it changed very little. In life, it probably resembled modern elephants, except that its trunk was shorter, and it had downward curving tusks attached to the lower jaw.(Souce: wikipedia)

This highly decorative antique print originates from an expensive luxury portfolio-style volume published in Germany between 1890-1920.The volume contained beautiful colour plates depicting prehistoric fauna.

Gold solidii of Emperor Lucius Verus (130 AD - 169 AD, reigned 161 AD - 169 AD) and Annia Aurelia Galeria Lucilla (148 AD – 182 AD). Roman, Imperial, 2nd Century AD. Harvard Art Museum. Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Copyright 2018, James A. Glazier.

I spent a good couple of hours working on this. I made two versions of it, but I doubt I'll post up the second one. Maybe I will eventually. But anyway, I got through beating the Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of The Patriots 3 days after it came out and I've been MGS crazy ever since so I decided to something constructive with my obsession. Granted, this isn't an image from the game, I felt it best represented the universe this game takes place. So I chose to illustrate the most influential person in the game, Big Boss. Hope you all like it and this new style I'm working on. I would love to hear feedback if anyone has any.

I fled. Hold me, when you return me to my master Zonninus, you will receive a solidus (cash reward).

Yes!

In acquiring this figure this morning I've actually completed the BAF from this series.

The figure has some interesting movement and articulation. He's a bad guy in the CPU Console Game MGS2 Sons Of Liberty.

Roman Coins

Beginning with the first emperor, Augustus (ruled 27 BC-AD 14), the Romans regularly issued coins displaying a portrait of the ruler or one of his family members on the obverse (front). The reverse bore an image of a deity, mythological figure, building, or a historical event. The imperial portraits are finely modeled and often represent individuals not seen in surviving sculpture.

All the coins on view here are gold aurei, except no. 34, which is a gold solidus.

.en

Solidarity is an awareness of shared interests, objectives, standards, and sympathies cause creating a psychological sense of unity of groups or classes.

It refers to the ties in a society that bind people together as one. The term is generally employed in sociology, and the other social sciences as well as in philosophy, bioethics, and Catholic social teaching.

It is also a significant concept in Catholic social teaching therefore it is a core concept in Christian democratic political ideology

-

Solidarity is also one of six principles of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union and December 20 of each year is International Human Solidarity Day recognized as an international observance.

Concepts of solidarity are mentioned in the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights, but not defined clearly.

As biotechnology and biomedical enhancement research and production increase, the need for distinct definition of solidarity within healthcare system frameworks is important.

Portrait

Ernesto Guevara, genannt Che Guevara [ t͡ʃe ɣeˈβaɾa] oder einfach Che (* offiziell 14. Juni 1928, nach anderen Quellen bereits 14. Mai 1928 in Rosario, Argentinien; † 9.

Erstere fand man laut CIA an seiner Leiche.

The reverse of a small gold tremissis (1/3 solidus) struck at Constantinople in the name of the Eastern Roman emperor Zeno, 474- 491 AD, depicting the Roman goddess Victoria (Victory) walking, holding out a laurel wreath in her right hand and a cross topped globe in her left, in a mixture of pagan and Christian symbolism.

Poor Mbele's little bus has broken. He heroically kept it running all day and safely got his charges to Gethlane Lodge near Burgersfort. Now it won't go, he's uncomfortable in the company of his grateful passengers who just want him to be one of us but struggles with the artefacts of Apartheid. Perhaps it was for the best that his bus isn't taking us further. From here on, the "roads" are potholes with little strips of ashphalt just to make the puzzle of how to drive on it worse.

Those grim roads led, eventually, to the Dwars River Heritage Site. Here the river cuts straight down through spectacular 2 billion years old white and black striped rocks. There isn't just beauty here. There are layer upon layer of conundrums. Yes conundrums, they say, is the plural and quite possibly because it doesn't even have a Latin root.

First of all this section has layers. But this is an igneous intrusion and these layers are both very thin and very long. Fractional crystallisation and sedimentation is simple enough to understand. Once a fluid containing chemical gets to a critical temperature or composition insoluble fractions will crystallise out and if they are more dense, they may settle. All good so far. Except these layers alternate: anorthisite, chromitite, anorthosite and so on. The chemical and physical properties must happen over and over again to get the same result. That didn't happen in a simple body of cooling, fractionating liquid which dropped out phase after phase as a mineral fell below its solidus composition, temperature and pressure.

If all that phase stuff wasn't bad enough there's evidence here of physical processes akin to those commonly seen in sedimentary rocks. There appears to be clasts of anorthosite picked up, fractured and moved about in the chromitite. How do you even conceive of something like chromitite, made up mostly of FeCr₂O₄, with a high density and melting point around 2200°C coexisting with anorthosite made up mostly of CaAl₂Si₂O₈ and a density maybe half that of chromitite and a melting point of around 1500°C? I give up. Nobody really knows. Just look on in awe knowing that it did happen even if we don't have a clue.

I managed to work out a trade with him for this ultra cool figure. The sad thing is most of these MGS2 figures cost a "bomb" over here in the UK.

I now need Revolver Ocelot, Olga and Solidus Snake from the series 2 line so that I can build the 7th figure Metal Gear Ray.
