A shot of the drive cages of the "20mm Oerlikon" computer. Inside those cages are a Blu-Ray writer, (from LG, in the top cage) a 120Gb SolidStateDrive (middle cage, top shelf, from Corsair, like many components in this build) and a 3 Tb hard drive (from Western Digital, lower shelf of middle section.) The bottom cage has been left open for future expansions - I have 3 open SATA ports on the motherboard. Taken the same day as the prior shot in my photostream, the same comment about the video card applies. Taken in Albany, CA by a Nikon D40x at ISO 1600 with a Sigma 17-70mm ƒ 2.8-4 OS HSM macro lens (at 46) Exposure is 1/30 sec @ ƒ 3.8. OS is ON...

The new computer. Includes: Intel I5 processor, Crucial M4 128 gigabyte solid state drive, 16 gigs of RipjawsX RAM, Antec 650 power supply, Nvidia GEForce GTX 650 video card, Asus P8 B75-m/CSM motherboard and a Corsair 500 Carbide Series tower.

Been off the air for a bit. My computer needed to be upgraded, so today Stu did an upgrade for me, now I have twice the space on my computer than I did before.

Another one. This time in retail packaging. Newegg was running a special on this the other morning ($240) and I just couldn't resist. The difference between the retail vs the OEM kit is the packaging and the 2.5" -> 3.25" bracket that the retail kit comes with.

Now I need to buy another laptop to put this in.

Here's what all the hype's about

Samsung demo'ing the fact that Solid State Drives (SSD) outperform hard disks in terms of Transactions Per Second (TPS - 7137 vs 1939 for regular HD's) and in terms of energy use (SSD's use 170W vs 286 for HD)

Solid state drives are amazing little packages. Compact, lightweight, and no moving parts. Oh, and blazing fast. After installing this, my MacBook Pro boots up in seconds.

Day 270 of Project 365 was a good one.

Geeking out on the new build!

This the best laptop upgrade anyone can do. Disk Data Transfer rate from Windows Experience Index jumped from 5.9 to 7.8 (max is 7.9). Not bad for a 30 month old laptop ! Photoshop opens in 4 seconds and when opening a 370 mg psd file, it takes 12 seconds ! Now that is quick!!!

Toshiba's new SSD SG2 series.

Christmas in July heheh! I built my last computer almost to the day...in 2005! It still runs...just reeaaalllly slowww... Anyhoo, I've always enjoyed building my own workstations.

The total shipment weighed 55 pounds! Amazon delivered all 11 pieces, in three separate shipments -- all within 48 hours, including a Saturday delivery -- and all at no charge! My Prime membership is even free with my student discount. Amazing.

Intel Core i5, ASUS P8Z68-V PRO, Radeon HD 6870, Corsair Vengeance 8 GB and HX 750W, WD 2 TB and Intel 160 GB SSD, Lite-On SATA DVD, Cooler Master Hyper 212+ and 690 II case. IMO the Hyper 212 is knda cheesy...and I won't be overclocking anyway, so it's going back.

Here is the workstation after build.

I was tired of needing to connect an external drive to my MacBook to access my image archive, and was planning to buy a 1TB drive to swap with my Apple-supplied 320GB. Then I came across the MCE OptiBay adapter that makes it possible to swap out the MacBook’s built-in DVD burner with a second drive.

I now have 800GB of storage in my MacBook, split between a speedy 160GB SSD drive and a regular 640GB hard drive. Great success!
