IVANPAH, CALIFORNIA, APRIL 04 2013: Tower 1's heliostats under a cloudy sky at sunset, with Tower 2 and 3 in the distance, at the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility. Located in the Mojave Desert 40 miles southwest of Las Vegas, The Ivanpah Solar Power Facility is a solar thermal power project, currently under construction, with a planned capacity of 392 megawatts, enough to power approximately 140,000 houses. It will deploy 170,000 heliostat mirrors spread over 4,000 hectares, focusing solar energy on boilers located atop three solar power towers, generating steam to drive specially adapted steam turbines The project, developed by Bechtel, will cost $2.2 billion and be the largest solar farm in the world (photo Gilles Mingasson/Getty Images for Bechtel).

Marstal is home to one of Northern Europe's largest solar power complexes, using solar power to heat water for the local District heating.
Ærø has the world's largest solar power plants, with an area of 18,365 m². It covers a third of Marstal's power consumption.
Ærø is endeavouring to make the island self-sufficient in energy, and in 2002 a figure of 40 % self-sufficiency in renewable energy was reached. The initiatives have entailed high international recognition and Ærø is considered as one of the world's leaders in this field.
Ærø's three district heating systems of solar collectors have won international acclaim. With the recent expansion the system in Marstal is now the world's largest solar collector system for heating.
In 2002 three modern wind turbines were erected. The wing tip of these turbines is 100 m (300 feet) above the ground and between them the mills cover 50 % of the island's electricity consumption

A three-phase transformer (on the pole) allows solar electricity from the 105 solar panels on the roof of the Littlestown Veterinary Hospital in Littlestown, PA, to go into the local power grid on Tuesday, April 19, 2011. The Littlestown Veterinary Hospital in Littlestown, PA, received a grant from the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Rural Development under the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP) to have solar panels installed to help reduce their carbon footprint and to have cost effective electric power for the hospital. REAP provides grants for energy audits and renewable energy development assistance. The program also provides funds to agricultural producers and rural small business to purchase and install renewable energy systems and make energy efficiency improvements. The expected cost savings using solar power for the hospital’s electrical needs is expected to reduce the facility’s operating expenses by 30%-40%. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung

These panels automatically follow the sun across the sky.
One cloudy day, I noticed they were all pointing different directions, and when I looked up noticed that there were dark clouds broken by many different bright areas across the sky. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me.

I brought this solar charger to Yirol, mostly to charge my own camera batteries while I was there. It could run a string of small christmas lights inside the mud hut all night. It was also wonderful for the video camera. Rather than charge batteries we just plugged the camera into the power pack and lugged both of them around.
There is no electricity within a 200 mile radius of Yirol except for generators but gas is scarce and extremely expensive since it is so difficult to transport things in SOuth Sudan.

The solar array in Lind is situated on 200 acres, is the result of a partnership between Avista Utilities and Strata Solar. Strata Solar developed, owns, and operates the solar facility in Lind, which is within Avista’s service area. Avista has a power purchase agreement with Strata Solar to provide the energy generated from the solar array to Avista customers.

Demanding good jobs, healthier communities, and frontline justice with 100% clean, renewable energy, hundreds of New Yorkers converged on the State Capitol on Wednesday to call on Governor Cuomo and state lawmakers to support the NYS Climate & Community Protection Act (A.10342) – the nation’s strongest climate protection bill. NY Renews, a historic group of labor, environmental, and grassroots organizations, is coming together for the first time to trailblaze a new front in the fight against climate change – pushing the climate protection debate from an environmental discussion to an economic and social justice one.
