Zhou and other members of Zetian Mi’s research group are using the large magnifying glass to focus the sunlight directly on a small semiconductor covered in water. The solar energy is used to separate the hydrogen and oxygen into separate elements. “Basically, we’re using green energy to extract hydrogen from water,” said Professor Zetian Mi.

Amenetou Abdoul Aziz from Tindjimbane village belongs to the Tamashak people of Mali. She is a 44 year old widow who has been raising her three children on her own ever since her husband was killed 6 years ago. She lives with her father and her brother and to get by she washes other people’s clothes, and does a little bit of commerce.

 

Her community chose her because they knew that she would benefit from the income of repairing and maintaining the community’s solar systems. “Besides, I am good with my hands. I have always liked to work with my hands and was always interested in learning more” she says. Although she never went to school, she can speak French in addition to her local dialect. Before coming to India she left her children with another brother and with the help of a monthly stipend given by the Barefoot College through its local partner NGO – AMADE, the children are being looked after. She started her training along with 4 other women from Mali at the end of January,2007. In this photo, she is learning to make the first circuit and to assemble the lamp.

 

The Barefoot Solar Engineers are also trained to repair anad maintain the solar lantern circuit and as well as the solar panels and batteries for the household systems. In the afternoons, she teaches the other women how to knit and once a week she calls home and talks with her children.

A new replacement Ferris wheel open on the Santa Monica pier. This new and improved wheel is solar powered and has over 160,000 LED lights. The wheel has twenty gondolas which hold six adults per and is 130 feet tall at it's highest point. The new wheel cost 1.5 million USD, the old wheel was auctioned off on EBay for $132, 400 USD.

Baltimore City has created the solar powered water wheel, a 100,000-pound trash-collecting device that harness solar power and the current. Debris is funneled into the device and then onto a conveyor belt that deposits it into a dumpster, which is emptied once full.

Big oil hates renewables because they're distributed: it's not easy to centralize the profits to keep the oil barons rich. Many small and medium businesses share both the work and the rewards. We all need to raise our voices -- and vote with our dollars -- to make sure that big oil's lies and manipulation don't keep us from doing the right thing.

Solar POWERED clothes dryer? Why not? The tobacco plants are long gone except for the tell-tale "fragrance" wafting out the door of the greenhouse. However- the smell of tobacco, the plant, and tobacco, the smoke, are very different. The growing of tobacco is as old as North American civilization. I don't smoke but I can't deny the place tobacco holds in NA history. But this image is about an inventive way to use solar POWER to dry clothes. It was a car stopper.

The solar powered concert in Chisinau that took place on 28 April 2013 is just the beginning for rock band FurioSnails. Together with the EU and UNDP, the band is advocating for the use of renewable energy in the country.

Thirty women from Bhutan have travelled to the Barefoot College in Tilonia, India, to become Barefoot Solar Engineers. They will train for 6 months before they return home to solar electrify their own communities in Bhutan.

Marstal is home to one of Northern Europe's largest solar power complexes, using solar power to heat water for the local District heating.

 

Ærø has the world's largest solar power plants, with an area of 18,365 m². It covers a third of Marstal's power consumption.

 

Ærø is endeavouring to make the island self-sufficient in energy, and in 2002 a figure of 40 % self-sufficiency in renewable energy was reached. The initiatives have entailed high international recognition and Ærø is considered as one of the world's leaders in this field.

 

Ærø's three district heating systems of solar collectors have won international acclaim. With the recent expansion the system in Marstal is now the world's largest solar collector system for heating.

 

In 2002 three modern wind turbines were erected. The wing tip of these turbines is 100 m (300 feet) above the ground and between them the mills cover 50 % of the island's electricity consumption

One cloudy day, I noticed they were all pointing different directions, and when I looked up noticed that there were dark clouds broken by many different bright areas across the sky. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera with me.
