... Dolly Sods that is. Early morning capture with moonlight coming in from the west as well on the foreground rocks, giving a nice mix of light for this morning pre-dawn view.
This is an old image of a sunrise from Bear Rocks Preserve of the Dolly Sods Wilderness of West Virginia. In this image you can see the fog that laid in the two valleys in the distance. The day I was there and caught this sunrise, all of the red leaves were blown off from a storm the week before I was there. Too bad as it is quite beautiful with the Autumn foliage up there but at lease I caught the sun breaking through the clouds. Caught a little sky reflection in the water pool on the big rock in the foreground.

Taken last week from the high plateau of Dolly Sods in WV. Some torrential rain on the trip, but interesting skies in between storms. Thankful that my tent stayed dry!
L'anse aux Meadows at the far north tip of the Great Northern Peninsula in Newfoundland was the first landing site of Vikings in North America around 1000 AD. The archaeological remains of the settlement were discovered in 1960 by the Ingstads, a Norwegian couple who were convinced that this is the site of Vinland of Norse sagas. The settlement was though to have lasted for a couple of years before it was abandoned. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The original settlement contain eight buildings constructed of sod laid over a wood frame construction. This is a detail of the sod construction of building F, a reconstruction of the largest house. Sod houses are surprisingly warm and dry and cozy and Inside the house a small fire was all that was needed for heating (and cooking).

It was a good day for those with umbrellas. I always carry one in my bike bag. And a rain jacket which was a good move.
Just back from several days shooting away in western Maryland and West Virginia ... a morning view here from the Dolly Sods area looking over the sea of fog enveloping West Virginia.
Took a trip down to the highlands to grab some shots of Dolly Sods while the huckleberry bushes were still rid. Actually the whole area was showing all the Autumn color beauty but the two trips up the mountain were foggy. The first day the fog persisted all day and the second day it was still foggy when we left. I stated on another post that most likely the next day was clear. My luck kinda runs like that lol. Anyway, I decided to post this image as I liked the content of the composition. Although I definitely would of preferred a little less dense fog background lol. No matter, I still love getting up there when I can.

Image taken in Iceland. Lost most of my photos when my external hard drive failed. Guess I need more backups.

The ever elusive "Gray Ghost" gave me a nice look, back on the sod farms of Wallkill NJ.

I'm still filtering through some old files as I plan some day trips for some Autumn shooting excursions.
The Bear Rocks is part of the Dolly Sods Wilderness Area. This high-elevated plateau features an ecosystem that is typical to more northern regions. Beautiful geological formations and firey-red vegetation make this place one of the most photographed in West Virginia. Although capturing an interesting photograph might be a challenge. Relentless winds make a photographer's work difficult, and autumn can be chillingly cold. I experienced both during my trip to the place in October 2015. It was a windy and freezing morning, but the beauty of the place prevailed and made me patiently wait for the sun to appear above the horizon.
Late day lighting over the Dolly Sods in West Virginia. The sun hitting the cloud deck from above and shining down through to the highlands made for some interesting tones.
