When I saw the two snowmobiles perched on top of a container in Sisimiut, West Greenland, they looked like a pair of aliens surveying the town. I wonder, in the high snows of winter, if they could just have been driven straight off the roof?

I drove a snowmobile! For 4 hours! It was noisy and really made my hand hurt. Not shown: I flipped it on its side twice, it's apparently really easy to do.

Snowmobiles on a snowy day, small, medium and large! :-).
The bison are more likely to make trouble for the snowmobilers than the other way around. The new 2-stroke machines are so much quieter and less polluting than the old 4-stroke machines, and the bison are so used to them that they will wander, often a whole herd at a time, into the road (groomed roads require far less energy expenditure for the bison in winter than slogging through deep snow) and just stay there. All over-snow vehicles must yield to them, which sometimes means a long wait.
Yellowstone's current requirements:
The “New BAT” designation refers to a snowmobile that meets the park’s Best Available Technology (BAT) standard. As of December 15th, 2015, all snowmobiles entering the park must operate at or below 67 dBA and must be certified to a Family Emission Limit (FEL) no greater than a total of 15 g/kW-hr for hydrocarbons and 90 g/kW-hr for carbon monoxide. A snowmobile will be certified for six consecutive winter seasons following its manufacture or until the snowmobile travels 6,000 miles, whichever occurs later. See the table below for a list of approved snowmobiles.
Lamar Valley, Yellowstone
This trail takes you from Shot to Walsh Lake....about a 75 minute walk or two and a half hours when you have two squirrel obsessed Samoyeds
Snowmobiles all fuelled up ready to go out for a night safari in the forests and snow. There was more than one company running these from this location and about a hundred snowmobiles in all it seemed.
Did not go out and try a trip as you need Winter Sports travel insurance…….

Snowmobiling is a very popular form of winter recreation in the upper midwest and many areas like the one I reside in feature miles and miles of snowmobile trails. These trails sometimes require bridges like this one that are built on site or are recycled road bridges that are moved to the trail.
A cool way to view mine or anyone else's photostream is on fluidr.
Have worked some more in Photoshop, pretty pleased with the end result.
What do you think, better or worse?
I also wanted to try something with presentation. Cut paper-does it add anything? or is it too distracting?
I really like how this turned out. Dunno why I took so long to photograph it. The treads really spin and the steering (sort of) works.
I was inspired to build it after seeing the last bits of Inception again.

The hobby of riding snowmobiles is big business in northwestern Wisconsin and a number of good trails around Spooner and Hayward beckon enthusiasts in large numbers.
