I know I'm totally dating myself, but this beautiful "exploding" Red Cyprus Vine made me think of the mascots for Rice Krispies: Snap!, Crackle! and Pop!. (Germany: Knisper! Knasper! Knusper!; France:Cric! Crac! Croc!; Quebec: Cric! Crac! Croc!; Denmark:Pif! Paf! Puf!) It's Friday again, the last of the Summer, and it looks like a wonderful one here. Taking photos of a large Snapping Turtle is a photographer’s delight. There is plenty of time to get the right angle, shoot from different perspectives, and lots of opportunities to rest between shots.
A couple of people who know turtles estimated the age of this grizzled veteran somewhere between 25 and 40 years, possibly older. Evidently, things like the smoothness of the shell and the well-developed limbs are clues to look at.
It’s not quite “Jaws” reaction when some people encounter a snapping turtle when they are in a lake, swimming, but not far off. The out-sized lore of these turtles is a little off kilter from reality.
Snapping turtles are normally not aggressive in the water, but more so when they are on land and feel cornered. How bad is their bite? Bad enough to break bones or separate a digit from the body so it is probably best to view them from a distance, or through a telephoto lens.
The ability of turtles to survive our Minnesota winters makes me envious. They hibernate at the bottom of ponds, lakes, and rivers, wherever water does not freeze completely. They have been designed to absorb oxygen through their hind end (true), so they don’t need to surface to breathe, enabling them to stay underwater for up to 6 months!
Don’t let their leisurely pace fool you. A mother will often travel 1-2 miles to find a good nesting site, although they normally always return to their home territory afterwards.
They have been greatly helped in their travels over the last decade as the DNR has installed GPS in their shells. (Well, that last statement may not be true.)
