Like many Canadians, we were out to see the fireworks as part of the 150th Canada Day celebrations last night. We hadn't been for a while and had difficulty finding a spot in the large crowds, which cut it a bit close - I was still setting up my camera when the first missiles went screaming up into the sky with a snap, crackle, and pop! I caught this scene after missing the first salvo.

Snap peas are edible-pod peas with rounded pods and thick pod walls. Delicious in a salad or just to snack on.

Antirrhinum is a genus of plants commonly known as dragon flowers, snapdragons and dog flower because of the flowers' fancied resemblance to the face of a dragon that opens and closes its mouth when laterally squeezed. They are native to rocky areas of Europe, the United States, Canada, and North Africa. It is widely used as an ornamental plant in borders and as a cut flower.

I wanted to keep Bengie (the dog) in the background.

I have been seeing the dreaded blue screen a few times over the past days, probably time to format my HD and reinstall the OS. Luckily I keep all my pictures and other important docs on separate external drives.

Happy Sliders Sunday!

I can't quite remember all the layers, textures and slides I experimented with before this emerged.

The original was a holiday snap from 2010 and I was torn between an old sepia postcard look - or maybe a Polaroid instant snap. So I ended up trying for both ;o)

Sky texture my own, Photoshop for desaturating, sepia tinting, text and layering. And iPad Afterlight for the Polaroid surround.

I'll be away for most of the week - busy - but catching up again ASAP ;o)

Glancing through my gallery you might think that we have an abundance of insect life in our surroundings. Nothing could be further from the truth and I struggle to find much at all day to day, especially at the moment during our anticyclonic gloom. One species that does seem to have done OK is the mother of pearl moth - patania ruralis. As I go around the garden watering with the hose, I inevitably disturb one or two moths and this one flew out yesterday and secreted itself amongst the Japanese azalea leaves. Usually these moths in flight travel fast and disappear before I can pinpoint their position. But I managed to spot this one's hiding place and got a snap or two, even with our dark, grey skies overhead. These mother of pearl moths have emerged from a clump of nettles which we grew in a container pot. Quite often they have flapped back into the nettles which have kindly stung me as I strive for a snap or two. This time however, there were no such hazards.
